Nice! That was the first gun my dad got me. Even though a single shot I pretended it was a Winchester when I roamed the countryside shooting inanimate objects with it. later teamed up with an old model Single Six. I think it was on Bizarre Foods America where the guy shot a pig for a big feast in New Mexico and he was handed a Model 49 for it. My son has mine now.

Naw, 49 Ithaca is fairly close to junk. Got one of those in rafters too. Cannibalizes for parts worth more than gun. The only ones I know that want them is because they had one when they were a kid.

I love the 49! I've got one with the more yellow-honey colored stock. It is crazy accurate for what it is. I would love to have that example! Congrats! Very jealous. Can't imagine where that rifle has been hiding.

I don’t know. All the ones guys use to have shot like 52 Winchester’s. All the ones around now are somewhat less accurate. Pot metal, splined pins, stamped parts, ??? Hard to polish a **** even lubed. Not what I would call a heirloom quality piece. I got a Marlin 1897 when I was 5 and it made me somewhat of a gun snob at an early age.

Always wanted to try one but never bought one. Nice looking gun. Have Martini’s instead, very accurate guns. Love the action. Have a Hammerli free pistol that’s a mini-Martini Action, super accurate. Larry

I don’t know if you caught it or not but the 52 Win thing was suppose to be sarcastic. I once fixed a junk 49 for local kid buy setting up false magazine tube like ejector housing on a SA revolver. I used pieces out of a kit to rebuilt fill valve in toilet. The good old school type made from brass. I slit side of tube with Dremil and had brass ornamental nut from light fixture for handle. I should have got patent rights on it although I doubt your better custom shops would use it.

Here's me trying to look cool around 1970 with my Model 49 and my dad's Great Western .44 Special. Dig those striped pants! I was with my cousin roaming the hills once back then and some sparrows landed on a tree about forty yards away. I took a fast standing shot at one before it had a chance to fly off and it fell dead! I could not believe it. As I recall the front sight was on the barrel band and not the barrel. That isn't good as the band on mine moved a little. I later turned that right hand holster into a rough out lefty. My 1st holster work. Still have it.

When my son was small my wifes brother bought one for my son. It would snap more than it fired. Uncle had a gunsmith work on it and it still wouldn't fire half the time. We sent it down the road too a new home. Larry

My first rifle was also an Ithaca Model 49. I received it on my 15th birthday, which was about 51 years ago. Mine has the honey colored stock with some pretty grain. I was shooting with an older man one winter and he dropped it and the hammer spur snapped off. Of course, he had it repaired and other than being a lighter trigger, it has always been reliable. I lost the ladder for the rear sight and fixed it with a wooden match stick. I never did replace that ladder.

Mine has also fired thousands of rounds of .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle.

As I commented, I have a 22 mag version. You find about ten Ithaca 49s in 22lr for ever 22mag you find. I didn’t know they made them in 22mag until four years ago I was I in a gun shop when I asked to see the Ithaca 49. The clerk said, “Your the only person so far to know that’s an Ithaca 49.” I asked him how much and he said he didn’t know. I told him pretty much everything I knew about them and shared that I had never seen a 22 mag version but the 22lr version is worth about $200 in similar condition. The clerk asked if I was interested. I thought for a few minutes and said I guess not. I just didn’t need a 22mag but I told him I thought it was worth $200 at the very least. He said he appreciated my honest evaluation and asked if it was worth $100. I couldn’t walk out the door with $100 in my pocket and the rifle in the shelf.

My father in law bought one and I warned him they were pot metal junk likely and assumed they weren't worth the $150 he paid for it. We took it out to the range together, I'm assuming it wouldn't end well with this cheap rifle. I left that experience, got on GunBroker and started looking for my own and bought one within a couple of weeks! Mine isn't as nice as his was and cost me $25 more. I refinished the stock and gave it a thorough cleaning and it runs like a champ!

My grandpa bought a Used 22 magnum version in about 1973-74, He paid $25 bucks for it at a LGS. I had a lot of fun with that rifle. Pretty accurate and reliable. It had the oak wood stock and forearm. Grandpa traded it off in the early eighties for a 22 lr sears High Standard semi auto. Cheaper ammo. Sure wish I had the ole 49 now

I have a 22lr one and a 22 mag one a few serial numbers apart. I also have a model 72 repeater and a 20 ga super single. They all function well and the 22's are plenty accurate. Are they Marlins, or Winchesters no, but at the price they were back then one wouldn't expect them to be..love mine

I bought one for my youngest son some years back.
He hunted with it a little and we shot it at a dirt bank while
coming in from hunting. When I fired it and worked the lever
the fired shell would often hit me right in the forehead. Got
my attention.

My son preferred my Ruger 10/22s or my Remington 40X with the
big scope. Still have the rifle but it doesn't get used now.

Broken hammer was second biggest complaint on 49, 1st was extractor/ ejectors. I didn’t realize 49 had been around long as it has. I guess it did show up about time all the gun companies were getting in all the markets. I don’t know if Ithaca actually made the 49, 72 or 66 shotguns. I know about that time frame the major companies were getting low end stuff from France. The higher cost were coming from Northern European countries.
