Default Luger thread. Bust 'em out.

My mother bought me a 1918 DWM for my 21st BD in 1976. It was stolen in 1985. I found another just like it except it was stamped "Wulfsberg Police."

In 1970 my first handgun was a Stoeger 22 caliber Luger. Jammed every round. Dealer swapped me a another one. It worked but not the same. Traded it away. About 45 years later I see one at a local show. Bought it feeling nostalgic. It works perfectly.

Default Stoeger .22

Only "Luger" I have is a Stoeger .22.

StoegerLuger4fld copy.jpg

It was my Dad's. He bought it in 1974. Price was $59.95. It came with 2 magazines, a mag loader, and a leather holster.

luger w box and stuff-800h copy.jpg

I think he might have shot a box of ammo thru it. I've never fired it.

Ok. I like Lugers. I even compete with them.

Luger thread. Bust 'em out.-target-mcruz-50-series-img_3101-jpg

But I only have 4.

3 P.08. From 1916, 1938 and 1941(this is the one with the target above).

1 of the "1906 pattern" from the Portuguese Army Contract. This one was made in 1909.

Is the Police style magazine safety still active? it sure looks so on your picture. And that is very uncommon. Most of them were removed around the beginning of WWII.

Hmmmm... looks almost like it was out of the movie "Dead Snow", yet 2 years before that movie was released. Are you a time traveler?

This is the only Luger I own. It was found in the rubble at Berchtesgaden in May of 1945. A friend of the family who was with the 3rd Infantry Division and was part of the liberating force passed it on. I don't know what significance this pistol had to this veteran. There were better battlefield pickups then this around.
Of course I have never and have no intention to fire it. Although the bore isn't that bad and everything works as it should.

Mine is from 1940, and my dad brought it home after the war. Traded a carton of cigarettes to a British tank NCO for the Luger and a Victory S&W. These were the first pistols I ever shot.

The Luger is matching, except for the magzine. One of these days I need to pick up a period holster to go with it.

Here is my G Date (1935) Mauser manufactured P-08. It was a military issue. It was undoubtedly in service through the most tumultuous decade in the last 1000 years.

1923 Commercial. The dent in the sideplate was done by someone with a heavy hand when Germany was stamped.

My DWM still has the police mod in place.

I once entered a "Service Pistol" match with it. Rules were any pistol that was actually issued to any military. Mostly old 1911s with a few oddballs like mine. What I recall most about that match was the 17 below zero temperature.

The only one I have is just for a Mauser representation, (I really like Mauser’s too,) it’s a VOPO. I got it many years ago and it was stupid very cheap at under $350.00. But like all of the P08’s it seems even the VOPO’s are appreciated more as the years go on.

What a shame it used to be a K date but I was happy and surprised when I got it to see the K date. There was no choice/selection so you got what you got.

My three boys really liked to shoot it and the youngest always shot it better than me.

I like to see these old Lugers.
When I was a kid,I took the worst coins from my coin collection and bought a fairly realistic toy Luger. (Pre PC toys. Pre-ban toy).
So are these accurate at 25 yards?
Thanks for the pics!

Almost forgott. My "affair" with the Luger pistols started 54 year ago when I was 9.

It was a "Luger" water pistol.

I still have it. Doesn't work anymore though. It was all grey. But I painted it in my "teens".

Here it is.

In 1961 my Dad decided he needed a handgun so he and a buddy decided to mail order ( it was legal then) WWII surplus pistols from Klein's
I begged him to buy a model 08 Luger ...they looked so good , NO Way ...he said unreliable...they hang up too much , how about the Browning HP ? NO ... then the 1911 Colt ?...NO...
The old man and his buddy both thought the butt ugly Walther P-38 was the best , most advanced pistol to come out of WWII and NOTHING I could say would change their minds ... I was heartbroken and never did get a 08 Luger.
About 6 years ago Dad gives me the P-38 ...I still to this day wish it were a 1908 Luger...
Thanks for posting all the 08's ...at least I can look at them!

Here's my 1916 DWM that my dad bought with a German m40 helmet and 60 rounds of German ammo for $100 around 1960. Hpw the "black widow" grips got on it is anyone's guess but the guys over at the Luger forum said they were real and offered me some serious coin for them. Came with a 1937 Hans Romer holster and two non matching magazines. I shoot it occasionally.

1. The P.38 is a good pistol(it has been our service pistol from 1961 to this day), and it is not ugly.

2. You like the Luger? Go and buy one, there are still plenty around.

Before Ralph Shattuck invented the "black widow" Lugers no one cared much for the black grip panels and many were ditched. As a matter of fact. I got offered the black grips present on my byf 41 by a friend who has a Portuguese contract byf 42 and never liked the black grips.

I too, have owned a Stoeger .22 LR Luger that shot and functioned very well. Another variety was a post war Enfurt made Luger in .380. It threw the empties further than it would shoot.

There were two DWM manufactured Lugers but, I only have one left. A photo of it and its companion, a P38, are attached.

My Dad bought both of these back in the 60's. $85.00 for the all matching Luger and $60 or $70 for the P38.

2. You like the Luger? Go and buy one, there are still plenty around.
I agree, the P.38 is not ugly.

All the "Dad" P.08 references here remind of.

My Dad was indifferent to guns, not pro, not against, just indifferent. All my guns I bought myself.

Curiously is "Service pistol" was a P.08(in service here from from 1943 to 1961 when it was replaced, but not completely, by the P.38). I remember when I showed him my water pistol(that too was bought with my savings) is only comment was - Ah! a Parabellum.

My Dad in 1951 at 19.

I've had several P-08's including a 1916 DWM. Only one I have now is my Mauser BYF 41. It has matching wood stocks and the "black widow" stocks too, plus 3 FXO magazines, a loading tool, and a 1941 dated holster.

I also had a CYQ P-38 that my Dad brought home from WWII, but I foolishly had it polished & re-blued and eventually sold it after getting his permission.

OK ... I take it back ...The Walther P38 is NOT ugly .

After 6 years of shooting and working up loads , even with cast
semi-wadcutter bullets , I've come to appreciate how well it handles and how accurate it is . I doubt the P08 would function with cast bullet SWC reloads like the P38 does ... in fact I've tried a lot of different bullets , profiles , weights, cast lead , plated and jacketed types and the P38 will feed them all once the correct OAL is established . That's impressive .
She may not look as sexy as the P08 ... but Daddy was right ...it is the better design ...and she's gotten a lot better looking to me over the last 6 years.

Just don't go overboard here.

The P.08 is also very reliable. It will work with cast SWC too and also with hollow points.

It remains an excellent design and it is more sturdy than the P.38, who knew?

The problem was it was too labor intensive and costly to produce.

That’s really great shooting! Do you find any type/make/year Luger better then any other? Hand loads or factor ammo? Again, really great shooting with a service pistol.

I got this for $75 around 1995. It’s got no finish left, all numbers match dated 1918.

They all shoot great. I prefer to use the Mauser made ones, not because they are better, but because they are more recent.

The easiest to shoot is perhaps the .30 Luger. The sight radius is longer, the front sight is slightly better and the caliber is a trifle milder. But since it is my oldest one(it's 111 years old ) it is the one I shoot the least.

As for ammo. When I find good factory ammo in 115 grs that is what I use(that is their preference in the accuracy deparment). When not available(nowadays 124 grs is more common here), I reload. The exception is the .30 I mostly use reloaded ammo on it.

I shot my Parabellum pistol with 125 hardcast truncated cone bullets that just barely fit into the magazine and reliability and accuracy was good enough to allow me become club champion with the 9mm pistol twice in a row. The Walther P38 and P1 is not a bad shooting handgun either but I have found big differences in accuracy between the dozens and dozens of post-war P1s that I shot.

The Schiwy and Walther safety had been added to police guns since the upper pistol assembly can fire a chambered round after being removed from the frame by simply pressing on the trigger bar.

On the P.38 accuracy.

Put a P.38 through a "Ransom rest" and it will probably outshoot a P.08(true fact).

But, there is a "flaw" in the P.38 design. The front sight is mounted on the barrel. The rear sight is mounted on the slide. Both parts have rear movement on recoil and they are separate parts.

Portuguese Army rule of thumb for finding a "match grade" P.38.

1. Have a crate full of "new" P.38 pistols.

2. Check the slide of each and every one for lateral "slack".

3. Put those with minimum "slide slack" in a pile.

4. Try each and everyone of them for accuracy. Make a list of the serial numbers of the ones that group under 2 inches(never loose that list). Try to get one of those indexed to you. Because, if you don't, when you are assigned to another unit you will have to start all over again.

Option 5. Tell your "top kick" to get you a "good" P.38. Tell him if he "fails" his chances of ever getting to be Sergeant Major are "slim to none".

Default Mixmaster and his little brother

Bought a non functioning Stoeger from my local gunshop in 2008 for $100.

Brought it home and after a good cleaning it shot every long rifle I ever put through it.

The toggle top is a cool way to feed / eject, so kept a look out for a 9mm.

in 2017, Coworkers neighbor had one he inherited from his Dad. He looked up Lugers on Gunbroker and thought he had a $1,000 gun. It's a Mixmaster and someone had ground off the sight from the rear of the gun and he thought the large space of the area between toggle was the sight. We agreed on $400 and spent $80 on rear of toggle with sight to get it running. Never tried anything in it but 115 gr ball, new and reloads and it has functioned perfect.

I’ve had several mostly 4” in both 9mm & 30 Luger. My Dad wired a house in 1956 for a guy he worked with. He took a Artillery Luger on payment or partial payment, I don’t know details I was 6 at the time. That Luger shot like a rifle.

I was never a huge fan of the Luger, but am also one to never pass up a decent pistol at a good price. Got this one in July 2018 for $735....It gets attention at the range, that's for sure. I have since put some standard type grips on it.

I have 3 - sort of.

First is a 1921 DWM in 9mm. It has been nickel plated, but it shoots great. All numbers matching except for the magazine.

Second is a Stoeger 22LR "Luger" that I bought out of nostalgia. I saw them advertised in magazines and wanted one SOOOOO bad as a kid.

The last one is an Erma 7/8 scale 22LR "Luger".

The only one I have pictures of is the 1921.

Here is a picture, which has been shared before on here. The bore and rifling are shiny, as if new. Very early lower, much later upper. One of these days I suppose I will buy a nicer example but no rush.

Default My father's war bring back got away.

My father brought a very nice Luger home from Germany with him. After the war had ended he re-enlisted in the Constabulary Corp and was in Germany until 1947. I assume he had his choice of guns to pick from at that time??? He (I have it still) had the typed orders to bring it home from his CO in Germany, a Colonel, with the guns description and serial number listed. I only remember him taking it out and shooting it one time.
He would periodically take it down from the high shelf it was kept on and clean it at the kitchen table. I would always crowd around the table to watch and ask questions. But my father never gave much info about the gun or his service. He had participated in the Battle of the Bulge and I believe he spent a lifetime trying to forget.
Anyway when I was still in school we hit some hard times and he sold it for $75 if I remember correctly. I knew the guy that bought it but by the time I was in a position financially to try and buy it back the fellow had moved out of state. Long gone now. I would love to have it back in my hands. JA
