Right place, right time for once. New Colt Python.
I'm on waiting lists everywhere, but haven't been able to get a 2020 Python. Today the bride and I stopped at a Sportsman's Warehouse in a neighboring town to check for .38 Special ammo for my LEOSA qual next month. What do you know - right there in the case is a shiny new 6" Python.
It took 2 seconds to decide. Gimme gimme, says I. The bride, to her eternal credit, didn't bat a lovely lash.
First off: The tale of the tape. Marked at MSRP of $1499. GI Joe discount of $75, and $50 more off for opening a Sportsman's Warehouse credit card account, which I will never use. So call it $1375.
I had to wait an hour for the background so we went to eat. When we got back the clerk was laughing. He said as soon as we left a guy called and said his buddy told him there was a Python in the case and he was on his way to get it. For once, I wasn't that guy.
The old fella selling it to me says - need some ammo? These shelves were bare, but he goes in the back and comes out with two boxes of Aguila 158 grain magnum JSPs, at the pre-craziness price of 25 bucks each. Sold.
So here it is.
The known issues weren't present. Crown is unblemished and the side plate screws are tight. The action is great. I've had 3 other Pythons, which I traded off when people offered me stupid money for them. The single action is very smooth - cocking it is the same feeling as the old ones.
The DA pull is better than the old ones. No stacking - much more S&W like.
The sights are red ramp front and plain black rear. Not as nice as the old Eliason sights, though.
I didn't think I'd like the grips until I held it. They are laminate and fairly dull looking. I may try to refinish them before I pony up for more old school looking Python grips. They feel great - better than the old style. Slimmer, I think.
My range is closed this week for lead mining, but I work my firearms instructor gig up north on Thursday and Friday so I'll try to shoot it then.
My overall impression is very favorable. Maybe I'll show up at my LEOSA qual with this and turn some heads.

That's a beaut, and a great story on acquiring it. Treat your significant other to a lovely date night for endorsing your purchase. Be well!

Good for you - Lucky find on a nice gun. If I ran across a 4 incher, I would have to bust out the credit card.
I have only had the chance to handle one, at a gun show last year, and liked it. Question - Is that a quick change front sight I spy in your photo? A nice extra I didn't realize they had.

Glad you found what you wanted.
I myself never fell under the charm of the Colt snake guns
I preferred the 586/686 to the Python...easier on the wallet too.
But some folks like chocolate, some like vanilla.
Enjoy your new find.

Yes - apparently the front sights are easy to change out.

Aarghhhh! Congratulations! I've been trying to order one in through Sportsman's for several months as that's the only way I'm ever going to get one locally, but I keep missing the "in stock" button by minutes. I have two older ones and really like them, but I would like to get one that I'm more comfortable shooting. Glad you like yours. Now I need to redouble my efforts.

I wonder if the old Python target grips fit on the new frame? I don't know what happened to Sportsman's Warehouse in San Antonio. We had two stores until about 10 years ago, then they both closed. I went there often, never bought a gun there, but they carried a good stock of reloading supplies at reasonable prices. In fact, about the only place in town that did. Then, Poof, they're gone.

There are few things more satisfying than being in the right place at the right time, stumbling upon a gun that you've been hunting for, and it being at a price point you're more than willing to pay. Great story and great score!

That's the way I got my first one, a 6" one, also. I stopped by my local dealer one evening, and made my usual first beeline to the head. On the way out, I rand into one of the handgun clerks and asked "You haven't got any Python's have you?" He replied, "I got one of the new ones. I'll meet you over there in a minute." I hesitated about a ten seconds before saying "I'll take it." The only reason it took that long was I really wanted a 4" one, but I figured a 6" one in hand is better than a 4" one out there..."somewhere."
I got the 4" one a couple of months or so later. Happened to see them on the Sportsman's Warehouse website and hit the "buy it" button. Picked it up a couple of days later at the Roanoke, Va. store.
You're going to like it. I've shot the 6" quite a bit, at least by my standards. Great shooter. I didn't think I'd like the grips at first either, but they've grown on me. Altamont has a set I've thought about getting, but so far I'm happy with the ones on the gun. They're not as thick as the old Python grips, and don't have as much "curve" I guess is the right word to them.
If this Covid thing ever lightens up, I hope to get the the 4" one to the range. It's still unfired outside the factory.
Hope no one minds the picture. Everyone's probably tired of it by now.

Python
Congratulations on your new Gun purchase.
I'm happy for you. You will enjoy shooting it.
You knew you wanted one, you saw it unexpectedly,
and you bought it immediately while someone else
hesitated. Get story!
Thank you for the in-depth Revolver Review and many
pictures (I was wondering what the Rear Sight looked like).
The Best to you and your Endeavors.

OP,
Don't you just love when a plan comes together? I would like a 4 incher. I have a couple of questions. First, I wonder why Colt did splurge the extra nickle for a white outline rear sight? I mean doesn't white outline rear automatically follow when you say red ramp front sight? Next, it is kinda hard for me to tell, but are the new Pythons brushed stainless steel? If they are, don't the original bright polished stainless steel Pythons go for stupid money? I think if I bought one to shoot, I would polish it bright and shiney. I don't think doing that on a shooter would be bad. I think you could actually go back to the brushed look if you wanted. What do you folks think? Thanks.
Larry

My son and I put 100 rounds of Fiocchi and Aguila .357s downrange today. The Python was flawless as expected. No light strikes, no failures to rotate, no loose sideplate screws at the end.
The group below was at 20 yards, which is the length of the indoor range, with the 158 grain Aguila JSPs.
The homely grips are growing on me. They felt good even in fast DA fire.

Ordered a 6" from Sportsman's Warehouse website on Sunday night. They had 4" and 6" guns available for a couple of hours. Picked it up this afternoon. We'll see how it shoots but everything is very satisfactory as far as appearance, action and fitting go. 'Bout darn time!

Brad-
Yours shoots about like both of my older Pythons did. Both put all six in a ragged hole with 158 grain ammo at 25 yds. on a good day, but so would my S&W M-27's.
Jay Framer said he sent his new Python back to Colt for work. I haven't seen any of his posts after I got out of the hospital. Did he ever say if they fixed his gun right?

I think he sold it, then got himself banned for something.
His was an early one. Colt seems to have corrected the issues (buggered crowns and loose sideplate screws that caused the hand to not turn the cylinder) on the ones coming out now.

It is amazing how much discretionary income you suddenly find yourself with once you quit pissing it all away on raising kids. paying for college, etc.

I finally stumbled on a 4 incher at a show last weekend in Vegas
Need to make sure the youngster shows respect to its elders.
