Default EAA Witness .45 mag. question

The magazines on my Tanfoglio Witness .45 Carry-Comp have a fine spring steel wire about 1/32” in diameter closely fitted around their exterior. They slide on/off easily. I don’t see what purpose they serve. The gun functions with or without them. All they do is take up space. What are they for?

None of my large frame magazines came with that wire

I just checked my 45 Elite Match to see if the magazine had any play in the magwell, but it does not. I thought that might be there to prevent wobble

Is the 45 Carry Comp you are referring to the one they sold about 12-15 years ago, or is this a recent offering?

Are you the original owner?

No I’m not the original owner. I bought it used. The wires fit the exterior of the mag body perfectly so I don’t believe they were a DIY project. This gun came in the old burgundy Tanfoglio plastic box. I’m guessing 20-25 years ago.

I misunderstood the thread title and thought that EAA had come out with a Witness chambered in .45 Winchester Magnum.

My EAA Witness magazines do not have such wire additions. They are in .45 ACP, 9x19, and .38 Super (2 each). No idea what function they might serve. I got mine back around 2008-09 direct from EAA. You can call EAA and ask.

I do not own a large frame Witness pistol, but I have seen a good number of them and I have never seen one with a wire on the exterior of the magazine.

It's just a retention spring that would be on either: #1 the plastic mag cap to keep the mags in place, or #2 a retention spring in the mag well at some point to keep the mags in the firearm.

Or it could be a home made spacer to keep the mag from inserting too far?? I know you don't think it's a do-it-yourself project; but I think it could be

Same traffic. .45, .22, .38 Super mags for my Witness do not and never have had such. It puts me in mind of the "kicker" springs from older BHP mags, although I see no way that spring could serve a similar purpose.

I have the EAA Witness Compact 10mm, they don't have those either.
However, I have seen a version of these on some new Hi-Power mags, on those they're to make the mag pop out.
