Default Buying a Glock. Thoughts or feedback?

I am planning on buying a Glock 22 Gen 4 this week from a local at my hunting club. I have never really thought about purchasing one before but thought I should, because I have little to no experience with them and it is a good packaged deal...hardly used, 4 mags, back straps, case, holster and ammo. Seller didn't come outright and say it but I think things may be a little tight money-wise and he knew I collect...

My thought is to become acclimated to it and use it for carry on the farm and possibly concealed carry (have license...) or as a general woods and fishing gun.

Anyone own one? Thoughts on Glock?

They have a sterling reputation, but I always liked wood, bluing, and steel, but I feel that I am or have been missing out and will get it. Thanks in advance.

Admittedly, not the prettiest girl on the block.

While I have zero experience with the model 22, my local police department has been using Glock 21's for the past 20 years or so. Frankly, I was horrified when we switched to them. A lot of water under the bridge since then......not one gun induced failure during that period of time that I'm aware of.

Love them or hate them, their reliability speaks for itself.

I own a G22, an LE trade. I also own a number of others.

With a G22 you can get conversion barrels in 9mm and 357sig and have 3 in 1. You do have to use G17 9mm mags, though.

It's a good piece. I think you'll be happy with it!

Glocks are the Pontiac Azteks of the gun world looks wise, but they are good, solid reliable pistols. Not my cuppa, but if it's a good deal, go for it.

I would say to buy it if you can get it for a reasonable price. I have owned and carried Glocks for 30 years both on duty and off duty. Glocks are not for everyone but they are generally reliable, parts are plentiful, and they are easy to work on. Some people complain about the grip angle. I have never had an issue with that.

Some people say Glocks are ugly. The Glock is a basic weapon/tool and they don't have some of the looks, ergonomics, and bells and whistles of some other pistols. With the Glock 22 you can basically have three guns in one. With the proper conversion barrels and magazines you can shoot .40 S&W, .357 Sig, and 9mm.

If you have never owned a Glock, I would say try it. You might find that you like it.

In my past life, I attended the Glock armorers school twice. I agree with Armorer951 completely. Great tools. The only repairs I ever remember making on Glocks were sight changes. Quite a few of our Officers carried Glock but I never bought one.

I you look at Glock as a utilitarian gun, you can’t go wrong. Especially if you get it for a good price. IMO, Glock cannot be beat as a strictly utilitarian semi auto.

People complain that they are ugly. Compared to what?
The grip angle is wrong? That can be overcome.

If you drop it, no big deal. Scratch it, no big deal.

Look at the Glock as the Craftsman tools you have in you box. Not the prettiest or the fanciest, but it works every time you need it.

Glock's solid reputation is well-earned. Very ubiquitous in the self defense world.

I had a Gen3 Glock 23. Good pistol. Shot it well. Had a couple of feeding hiccups early on, but I think I may have been limp-wristing it as it was my first polymer pistol. I'd only shot metal guns before. So something to keep an eye on when you shoot it. Locking your wrist is important. Some people, like me, can get slide bit on the back of the hand sometimes, especially if you have large hands. I believe some of the Gen4 backstraps have a beavertail tang, so that should eliminate that problem.

I tried a Glock 22, but didn't care for it. The finger grooves didn't fit my hands well. The Glock 23 fit perfectly, though. But that's a personal quirk. May or may not be an issue with you.

Some people like to get Glocks and start making changes and modifications right away. Fight that urge. Shoot your gun for a while before making any changes, and make changes that actually address some identified shortcomings. I modified my Glock 23, but they were all made to address things that helped me shoot and handle the gun better.

But yeah, it's a fine pistol. I sold my Glock 23. I prefer hammer-fired DA guns. But I'll probably add a Glock 19 at some point, just because they're so common.

Just my opinion.

I've got two Glock 22's. One is a Gen II that I picked up surplus, had the slide milled, replaced the night sights, added a 9mm conversion barrel, and ended up dropping the entire gun into a P80 lower that allows the longer 22 slide to fit on a 23 sized grip frame. The other is Gen IV that I also picked up surplus (I think I paid $330). I just recently received the Recover Tactical brace for it, and put some rounds through it last weekend. It really changes the game for me in terms of Glocks. It is compact when folded, weighs nothing, allows for the addition of a second mag on the gun and a light. I can see this package going in the lock box in my truck.

Many law enforcement agencies used or are still using them.

I've owned a couple of them and like 99 percent of Glocks they are insanely durable and reliable. I know a couple of LEOs personally why carried them on duty.

I would not hesitate to buy another one. They are very plentiful and reasonably priced.

FWIW, I have three (3) Glocks, 32, 21C, 20. Have also owned a 23.

Solid handguns, the 32 is my off duty sidearm I chose to qualify after retirement from the PD.

The model 22 has been carried by a lot of officers, so I think you are OK.

I owned a Gen 4 22 for a short time, still have the Gen 4 17. It was a nice shooting handgun, no issues at all. These were my first ever Glocks, bought this year pre-COVID. I sold the 22 to a guy who wanted it more than I did. As far as a 40, I shot it as well/as fast as the 17. I'm a S&W fan boy (and Ruger), it's what I carried on/off duty and competed with in PPC. Only change I've made to the 17 is night sights, otherwise I bought it new and bought some extra mags/holster. If you can get it for a good price, I'd go ahead and buy. Good, solid handguns; that's saying a lot from me! :-)

This is a picture of the drawer next to my bed, about 18" from my pillow. Glock model 22 with Streamlight M6 tactical laser and light. I don't know what else to say.

I had several Glocks over the years. Got rid of them. I just don't like a striker fired pistol. The trigger must be treated with great care. Also, they come with plastic sights. I would certainly replace them with some type of tritium sights. Just my 2 cents. If you want it and it's a good deal go for it.

Glock 22 is a solid pistol. Got ammo? If you do, great. If not, I’d be careful about venturing into a new caliber in the current shortage climate.

TH
ms gamboolgal and I both EDC G-26's.
We have been CCW since the mid 90's when it first became legal in Texas.
We have tried revolvers, various 1911's, and other 9mm pistol manufacturers.
Without exception - all the other pistols were not as reliable as our Glocks. And trust me, we spent alot of money on fancy pistols wanting them to reliable EDC weapons.
For us, the Glocks are best, but that's just us.
We settled on Glocks long ago as we carry for self defense.
Glocks go bang and they eat anything.
Spare Magazines & Parts are readily available if needed.

Remember Charles Lindbergh? Flew the Atlantic, showed pilots how to get range out of their P38's in the Pacific war, consulted all over the aviation industry?

He called his VW Beetle "the best machine I ever owned".

And that right there is what a Glock is like.

Only thing I'd add is, yes, you do want to remain aware of the trigger. Get a kydex holster, not leather. And do the $.25 trigger job (see Youtube).

I don't like Glocks. I often tell people: "Friends don't let friends buy glocks."

This stems from my experience with them in the early 1990's when our agency was considering changing guns. Glock tried to force them on us and when we "speced" them out they filed complaints with state purchase and contract.

Don't like their business practices and their guns don't fit my hands.

I never got over the fact they are ugly, utilitarian and the arrogance of their sales people. While my feelings have nothing to do with how they function, I'll never buy one.

The Glock 22 is one of only two 40 S&W Glocks I would buy, the other being the model 35.

It would be very good as a woods/fishing gun. Concealed carry might be interesting since it is a full size handgun. If the price is right and you have ammo for it, do it. If worst comes to worst and the political climate changes in November you will be able to flip it for profit easily or keep it as a extra because you never know. I bought a surplus New Orleans PD Glock 22 earlier this year and it is a accurate and reliable handgun. I just do not like the recoil pulse of the .40, as it is quite snappy compared to 9mm.

Can't beat a Glock, as a Glock is a Glock, different caliber yet still looks like a Glock...

A very good duty weapon/farm/fish gun forsure does what it is supposed to do under all conditions.... nuff said !

Unless you have a thing for .40, I would recommend a Glock 17 or 19 for your first glock.

I have a Glock 21 and I love shooting it. I like how it looks, feels, and it always goes bang. Sucks I can't find .45 ACP ammo in abundance or cheaply now, but I figure things will get better soon. Well, hopefully while I am still physically able to shoot.

I have three Glocks, all in 9mm. A Gen 2 17, a Gen 3 26, and a Gen 5 19.

They are good utilitarian handguns. The 17 pulls "bump in the night" duty, and the 19 goes along on road trips. The 26 is just fun to shoot.

I'd shoot one first to see if I liked it, but that's just me. I've shot three Glocks, and had three different reactions. The G19 was OK, but just OK. It didn't do anything my SIG P320 couldn't do, so I passed. I tried a G42 and hated it. I couldn't shoot it accurately, its trigger was mediocre, and surprisingly for a .380, it was hard to rack. The G29 I actually liked. Accurate, decent trigger, and 10mm goodness, made it one I'd consider purchasing. Thus, I'm a big believer in "Try before I buy".

If you get it for a good price, buy it. In today's climate you can always get your money back if you don't care for it. They are good, practical tools.

A few years ago, when I was still teaching the NRA personal protection courses, I bought a G19 just to develop enough expertise to teach effectively. Everybody had one, everybody recommended one, everybody wanted one. Mine was OK. Never had a malfunction. Meh.

Glock high reliability is touted everywhere. That said, I have not experienced a weapon induced malfunction in my home-built Colt Essex in years (32,000+ rounds later and lots of learning curve there). I have never had a malfunction in 3 Kimber 1911s, my SIG P229, or my CZ75.

I'm a diehard 1911 guy when it comes to autos. Been shooting them for 50 years. Having said that, I also have about a dozen Glocks in various sizes and calibers, and I would observe the following:
a) They are ugly. There's just no defending their looks. But they work.
b) They are relatively light and carry a large ammo load. As I get older, the weight matters more and more. And they work.
c) They are inexpensive and you can maintain them about like most people maintain their lawnmower. They will still work.
d) Parts are plentiful and accuracy is generally acceptable if not target grade. And they work. All the time.
e) There are lots of aftermarket parts and things available if you like to tinker and upgrade and they will still work. That is often not true of 1911's. Generally speaking, the most reliable 1911's I've seen are the ones that have been home-gunsmithed the least.
f) They are dishwasher safe.
The trigger takes some getting used to so you'll have to work with it a bit. Don't give up on it after you've fired 50 rounds. It will likely get better. Work with it a while and I bet you'll be glad you got it.

Like has been said, not a thing wrong with Glocks, they have the reliable reputation for a reason. I really didn’t like them until I bought a Gen2 G17 and started shooting it. Now I have a G19C, G22, G23, and a G26, all Gen 3’s to go with my G17. I usually EDC one of them.

My identical-twin brother (deceased) served as a LEO for a little over 20 years before his death. He was slow to warm up to the Glock. However, he soon changed his opinion. He said it was a very easy pistol to train new officers on, especially female officers since they usually had no bad habits to unlearn and would listen to instruction.

With his encouragement I bought a G-22. I had owned a 17L and 21. Both were extremely fine pistols. Faultless in every respect. The G-22 was like the others ... excellent in every respect. POI = POA at 15 yds. using common .40 S&W ammunition. With reasonable practice I was able to keep all my rounds inside a 4 inch circle firing the qualification course. Excellent power, capacity and accuracy. Sincerely. bruce.

Glock 17s are the preferred handgun strapped to commercial divers working in shark territories around the globe, known for their reliability in emptying an entire magazine underwater, usually required with the larger sharks. When a bounty was put on Lionfish (deadly venom) in Florida, divers started hunting them with Glocks.
Saw a handgun course instructor deliberately throw his G19 into deep mud, shake it off, and empty the magazine at a target.
Kind of like a good woman..whole lot less important how pretty she is than how reliable she is...

My thoughts have been pretty much covered by the above comments. I have a 22 (Gen 3)that I don’t “like”, but which I’ll hang on to, just because it is so durable and reliable. I’ve taken it rafting, hiking, and on back country motorcycle trips. The only change I’d urge is to replace the plastic sights with something sturdier that suits you. 40 S&W seems to be a not-bad cartridge choice these days - my LGS still has some.

All I carry are Glocks. I've owned about 20 over the years; I currently have a 17, 19, 19X, 26, 34, and a 42 (which is great for deep carry).

The damn things just don't break. Other than a threaded KKM barrel for my 34 (good for running a can), I've never done a thing to them other than shoot them and clean them. Parts are dirt-cheap and readily available.

And as others have mentioned, the Glock armorer's classes are available to anyone with a GSSF membership. I highly recommend it.

No, Glocks aren't the prettiest guns on the block. But they work. Every. Damn. Time.

I once bought a gen3 Glock 22 from a friend who needed the money. Not being a great fan of the .40S&W round, I used the pistol along with a model 31 barrel to familiarize myself with the .357SIG round. Once that was out of my system, I sold both the pistol and extra barrel.
I have models 17 and 19 with Trijicon night sights that are both early gen3 2-pin pistols. I feel no real pride in ownership for either but they certainly are accurate and reliable. Those 50 round drum magazines tend to make them more fun.

We were issued the Glock 23 during the last 10 years of my career and can attest to their reputation for reliable operation so you can’t go wrong.

This has to be the most civilized Glock thread I've seen on this board. Like many others in this thread, I say it's hard for you to go wrong with one. Been carrying one daily for a long time now. At this point I don't look for anything else to go out the door with.

I am much happier with an M&P ...Glocks don't fit me at all. Never said they weren't reliable, weren't accurate etc....just don't fit is all.

Yes, I CAN shoot them, but choose otherwise.

I would think they're the Model 10 of the polymer semi-auto world. They pretty much always go bang when you pull the trigger.

I’m a revolver/1911 guy, but last year I bought a .357 Glock 32. My local cop shop had a deal on .357 Sig ammo, and the Glock was the cheapest gun I could get in the caliber. Even after shooting most of a case of ammo thru it without cleaning it the gun ran flawlessly. It is also very accurate. When everything went nuts this spring I qualified with the Glock. I carry it as a back up to my revolver when going to places where an angry mob is a possibility.

I have a couple of Glocks myself. Nothing to be ashamed of. I don't think they are so ugly. Ever seen a Chiappa Rhino?

Good guns, but remember it's a buyer's market for .40 cal guns these days. Everyone has jumped back on the 9mm band wagon so used .40s have been severely depressed (at least until the panic buying set in).

A used .40 Glock should go for significantly less money than a used 9mm Glock.

I purchased my first Glock earlier this year. Prior to my purchase, I had shot a Glock 3 times. The first time, I shot a 17L, and I really didn't like the feel of the pistol. Two years ago, when I worked my first GSSF match, I was lent a G34 so I could try the match. Last year, while working my club's GSSF match, I was lent a G17Gen4 so I could shoot the match. I didn't like the feel of the finger grooves, but I was able to take the prize for the high score by a handicapped shooter. When I purchased my Glock, I went with a G17Gen5 MOS for maximum match utility.

My suggestions:
1) if you are contemplating purchasing a new Glock, join the GSSF first so you can take advantage of the member discount. The MSRP for a G17Gen5 MOS is over $600, with the member discount it cost about $480.
2) if you reload, Glocks seem to respond well to coated bullets.
3) one way you can become more proficient with your Glock is to join the GSSF and participate in their matches. You don't have to be in the top places to win, they have special category awards and random awards that can vary from pistols to cash to memberships.

If you’re going to get only one, that’s probably the one to get. That or a 17 and it’s a 17 with the conversion barrel and mags.
If you don’t like it, it will sell.

Although I don’t have any first hand experience with the Glock 22, I do own a G19 Gen 4. Like many others, I bought my first Glock to see what all of the hype was about. Now I know. Even though it’s not the most beautiful gun I own, it has been flawless with reliability. Not one failure since I have owned it. My recommendation would be for you to buy the Glock. I’m sure it won’t be your last.

I think I have the hands that the standard frame Glock was designed for. After reading the late Stephen A. Camp's articles on the design and particularly his experience with the 17L, I lucked into just that model (a very early one).

My own experience is that if I grip it correctly, everything "wedges" into place. That's the only way I can describe it. Next, the grip angle feels more revolver-like. If I raise the pistol one-handed, with my eyes closed and then open them, I will usually see aligned sights. Finally, as Camp pointed out, you have to learn the Glock trigger. Mine is fairly light and has smoothed out from dry-firing.

The Model 22 is the same frame size as my 17L, so some of this will apply to both guns.

What DOESN'T apply of course is the six-inch slide and barrel. I love it. I call it my "cheater" gun. Less noise, less recoil. More velocity, more sight radius.
