Well I’ve had some great deals on revolvers. In the past year I picked up a 1930 Nickel 38/44 HD 5”, a nickel 15-4 4” like new and now a 66-1 2.5” with Tyler T Grips recessed cylinder pinned barrel. All in great condition and all under $625.

Love revolvers and these were too good to pass up. I carry a 36 daily and have a really nice 19-5 4” too.

I have two auto loaders left. A Ruger SR22 I got my wife - she has Lupus and Arthritis so anything more than .22 is painful (plus it has her favorite color purple frame) and I got an HK VP9 with their magazine promo a few years back. I got 4 free magazines for a total of 6. I live in Western NY (8 years to go before I retire and get out of here) so stuck with 10 round magazines.

I’m getting back to my old roots of target shooting at 50 yards. I’m guilty of being one of those guys you see at the range shooting their 9mm at 7 yards. I can keep them all in the black but big deal. Unlike the blue 19-5 I have or the Nickel 15-4 the HK has no personality. It’s a tool.

Since now is the time to sell I’m thinking of offloading the VP9 and getting something else. Something that gives me the same feeling when I pick up those nice steel and wood revolvers.

So I am looking for ideas. I have 1500 9mm rounds on hand so would like to get about another 9mm.

My local range is opening a challenge course of move and fire with varying targets I think out to 40 yards. Yes the HK could work but I’d like something different

Here are some ideas

CZ Shadow 2
1911 in 9mm

Maybe even save up for an STI Staccato
Or??

I’d like something for competitive shooting and to work on my shooting at a standard 50 yard range

The ten-round mag thing is an issue when it comes to interesting guns.

I have a Canik with a 5" barrel that makes me look good at the range. Sort of a poor man's Walther PPQ. You could go totally strange (like me ) and get one of these, although the 10-round thing might kill the idea.

The Sig P210 has always had a solid reputation for long-range accuracy, though I don't know enough about the current production models to say if that's still the case.

Since you seem to like revolvers, a 9mm revolver could be a good option, but I don't know much about them so I can't really give a recommendation. Plus, I'm not really interested in revolvers in semi-auto calibers.

While I'm not really a fan of 9mm 1911s (I'm no purist, but to me a 1911 means .45ACP...I'm not really interested in the other calibers), but I think that could be a really good option. The Springfield Armory Range Officer full-size gun comes to mind. For something higher end, Dan Wesson would be a good option.

Of the options you listed, I might actually lean towards a 1911 myself.

Just my opinion.

I have a Series 70 Colt in 9mm that I picked up a good 30 years ago. It was substantially customized with a thinned trigger and a lock up like a bank vault. It cycles like greased lightning and is very accurate. I didn't have the work done, that's the way I found it and it has been a great gun.

A Glock 17 or 19 with an Trijicon RMR mounted on it.
It will take your shooting to the next level.

I would jump on the wagon suggesting a P210 for target work. The new one is almost as nice as the vintage and significantly more accessible price wise.

That said, the CZ pistols are a nice pistol and remind me of a cross between a Hi-Power and a P210. The profile is similar to a HP and has the slide inside the receiver design like the P210. In my opinion, the CZ's are an amazing pistol for the price.

How many bullets in the gun do you really need? While I've never owned one, a 1911 in 9mm (that's the caliber, right?) seems like a pretty good choice; but don't skimp on price or quality, etc. Heard a lot of good things about them in different brands. Either way, good luck.

Or any full size S&W from the Performance Center?!

Personally, the only game where I would consider shooting a 9mm at 50 yards would be CMP EIC matches, ... meaning a 1911 (in my opinion) which would require conforming with CMP rules (read traditional barrel bushing, no bull barrels)! This would narrow the search to a Springfield Armory Range Officer Target.

I was in the same boat, so I did some research and bought 2 SPHINX autos: one in black and one in white.
Also a CZ 75 nickel and put white grips on it.

These are my3 most accurate autos. I thought about the Sig 210 but wanted something I would carry also. I place the 210 as a target shooter.
The CZ Shadow was a consideration also, but the Sphinx came with a better deal for the 2.
I often carry both at same time.. they are both tack drivers and fit my hand perfectly
And----I have never seen but one other--- my neighbor bought one after firing mine.

Sounds like you have had a preference for revolvers so I'll toss out my experience. I'm a dyed in the wool revolver gal but decided everybody should have a 1911, got a good deal on a Springfield Range Officer Operator(.45), shot better than me. Got a ridiculous high offer and sold it. I'd recommend the Springfield, but I'm not really familiar with the others you mentioned.
Plan to replace it with a 9mm version.

With the exception of the Ruger, your list had great candidates.

I would like to suggest a SIG X-5 or X6 pistol.

Unfortunately with the recent announcement of the closing of SIGs facility in Germany, these are currently spiking in price. That will settle down shortly. These are spectacular performers at any range.

Also as Kanewpadle mentions in his post above the EAA Elite Match is a surprising performer. I would expand on that by stating ANY of the EAA Elite pistols would be a superb choice. Here is an Elite Limited

While the one I own is chambered for 10MM Auto, it is also available chambered for the 9MM Parabellum cartridge

Ruger Lightweight Commander:

I've been a lifelong 1911 fan and I highly recommend a Ruger Lightweight Commander in 9mm. It's well made, accurate and reliable, and the price is reasonable.




Citadel officer frame sized 1911.

I had low expectations for this given the $250 price (lightly used) but it's both accurate and reliable and it's my favorite 9mm 1911 to carry. I did have to change out the too small and too sharp safety lever for an extended safety lever. Some hand fitting was required, but no more than is the case with any 1911. I added night sights and it's near perfect.






Star BM:

The Star BM is very much a 1911 clone and I own no less than three of them. I like them a lot. There was a period of time when I had to commute from NC to northern VA, and it was just easier to have a concealed carry pistol at each end of the commute and I kept one in my truck as well. You could also find them at dirt cheap prices in very good to excellent condition a few years ago. I'm not sure about now.

The Star BM is a great "1911" for concealed carry due to the size and features such as the bobbed heel on the frame. It's still one of my favorite carry pistols.



Browning Hi Power:

I carried a Browning Hi Power for nearly a decade and it's a great choice for an all around 9mm pistol for someone who likes single action pistols. It's a big large and heavy for concealed carry, but no worse than a 5" 1911.



I also own a couple FEG clones, a P9 and a first Gen P9M. Both are just as reliable as my FN Browning Hi Power, although not quite as accurate.




CZ 75 - in various forms

I carry a CZ 75 D Compact PCR and it's a great alloy frame carry pistol. I'm currently carrying it as I'm not able to shoot as much as I normally do so I've standardized on a DA pistol to maintain commonality with the S&W 686+ I carry in the winter months. It's accurate and very reliable. My sole complaint is that I'd had some corrosion under the enamel finish around the Kansas City roll mark. It's in an area of maximum sweat in the holster and apparently they compromised the finish with the roll mark. I had two bouts and both times chipped away the aluminum oxide and then spot painted with black enamel. It's the only CZ I've owned that has done this.

I also have a CZ 75 Compact, which is also a good pistol. I have the SA/DA variant, but frankly I carried it with the hammer down on the safety notch both to shorten the trigger reach and to avoid having to shift my grip to release the safety if I carried it in condition 1. If you've got large hands or a long thumb it's do-able without shifting your grip. It's accurate and reliable and the finish held up to years of everyday carry in really sweaty conditions. It's the only SA/DA CZ 75 I still own, the rest are decocker equipped. SInce I acquired the PCR, the Compact has worn a Kadet conversion kit pretty much constantly and it makes a great sub caliber trainer. It's also surprisingly accurate for a .22 conversion kit.

I also have a CZ 2075 D RAMI. It's a superb sub compact 9mm, with both 10 and 14 round magazine options. Again it's accurate, reliable and has held up well in everyday carry.

At the other extreme I have a CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical. It's an excellent range gun and tactical pistol. It's a bit large and heavy for concealed carry but very accurate and reliable.

The common element with all of them is that if your hand fits a 1911 well, the Browning Hi Power and the CZ 75 derivatives will also fit your hand well.

I have heard great things about the Shadow 2 from my brother and a friend. The friend was so impressed that after he tried his out, he bought 2 more for his daughters.

3. Colt Competition in 9mm

I don't own the SIG, but the one I shot (new model) was pretty impressive.

I give my hearty third in line endorsement to the EAA, Tanfoglio, Elite. Several years ago I came in second overall in the all-police handgun competition using a standard Witness that I had slicked up in minor areas. I had fellow cops coming up to me asking what brand of handgun was I using as they had never seen one before. BTW, I would have won overall if I could only count to six; the final course required two mags loaded with six ea. I had six in the first mag and then only had 5 in the second. I lost 10 points right there and lost the match by 6 points.

HK squeeze cockers are dandy guns.....



Shown are HK P7 PSP and HK P7 M13. Both are a hoot and scary accurate. I don't know how I lived without one of these for so long

I vote p210. Exceptional accuracy and very nice triggers. The trigger on my shadow 2 has creep & is less crisp. It will require an upgrade at some point if am to keep it.
Since you have the mag limitation, the Sig is a great choice, that was the only thing that kept me from getting one when they first came out.

You could go the 1911 route. Probably wouldn’t go wrong with a Dan Wesson or Kimber.

Canik TP9sf is an inexpensive, utterly reliable, excellent trigger, easy shooting gun. There is an Elite version that is more compact.
I shot my TPsf for a few years in USPSA, moved up to a Walther PPG 2.0 Q5 but the Canik was just as good for a lot less bucks.

My current favorite 9mms aren't on your list. Man oh man there's lots and lots of good 9mms on the market.

Today my favorites are:

Whatever you choose, keep the VP9. Boring is a good thing when it comes to guns, especially if that means boringly reliable.

Im down to just one 9mm that has any character. My little Glocks don't count. Its a Colt 1911 model O1991. Picked it up a few years ago before my buddies gunshop closed. It was hanging on their wall for months and I knew it was meant to be. I think its a parts bin gun that Colt is famous for as it has a blued slide and a stainless steel frame. Two tones are ok with me though. Its fun to shoot and there is barely any felt recoil as the weight soaks it right up. I'm toying with the idea of sending it off to night hawk to get some work done to it. It doesn't really need any as it runs great, I just like to tinker with things. So my vote is 1911 9mm.

Well....I like the P.08 Luger because they run smoothly like a well oiled sewing machine, and they point very well for most people.

But with 8 rounds in a single stack magazine and the incredibly small rear sight notch (even smaller than the notch on an original 1911 from the same era) it's not a very practical defensive handgun by modern standards. It's also not very CCW friendly.

Sig p210 new model, that is the top choice of your list, target model w standard grips is what I have and love.

1911 in 9mm: There is a magic in these, no muzzle flip and the slow cycle of the slide is something to experience, Dan Wesson pointman 9 if you can get one. Pure style.

I recently shot lots of Sig red dots and that is good for aging eyes and far out targets. Both my 226RX and 320RX are loads of fun. The 320 was my first Tupperware but I got to grow to love it, long slide and a great shooter. I added the heavy tungsten grip with weight in backstrap and that works.

Three good custom Beretta sources ...... Wilson Combat, LTT and Allegheny Arms in the Burgh.

I tend to favor;
Allegheny Arms for custom work/build... good folks.....local to me. Thou, I got my Beretta Elite IIs on E Langdon's recommendation..... and

Wilson Combat for "factory custom" as they have to old style decocker vs the "Kit", and old style (S) round trigger guard.

If you can find them Farrar made a Mag collar that turns a Compact into a Centurion..... there are also X-grip mag adaptors.

Another great one if you can find one is the Factory "Elite II" designed by Ernest Langdon when he worked for Beretta . Used they were going for over $1000 but with the new Wilson and LTT guns the prices have come down.


For "cocked and locked" you can't go wrong with a Browning HP... I like the newer MkIII for their safety and sights.
