.223 platforms
I like the .223. Plentiful and relatively cheap compared to , say .270 or 30-06 well you get the picture.Great plinkin ground and will do the job as far as I am concerned on just about anything else I might encounter in Louisiana. From what I gather, "modern sporting rifles" are somewhat out of favor amongst some crowds so the dilemma is what is an acceptable platform from which to launch .233 projectiles. Have an AR, have a mini 14, but I want something a bit more....genteel.
So I just purchased a Ruger .223 RSI Hawkeye and I will be mounting a Leupold 1x4 AR scope on it. That way I can send carefully aimed projectiles down range to my heart's content instead of popping off.223 from the mini and AR-thus saving money in the long run. Kinda like shooting a SxS rather than the Benelli SBE. And the Ruger IS a lot more socially acceptable. Now I can sell my AT and Mini at obscene profits and instead of spraying down the field feeling the need to keep firing until I have emptied the magazine I can languidly shoot as I see fit topping off the magazine of the RSI.
If they made a Ruger RSI in stainless in 7.62x39 my world would be complete. Or if someone has a stainless #1 in 7.62x39 give me a call

Cheaper?
Wouldn't have been cheaper to buy some 10 round mags, block them to 3-5 rds. and paint your EBR a lighter color-say Pink or Yellow. Those scream genteel.

Despite handling and firing a very large number of M16s, I have never owned an AR, and probably never will. I am just not taken with them. My one and only .223 rifle is a scoped Savage 112 Series J heavy barrel single shot bolt action, probably my most used rifle because it groups so well - 1 MOA or less (10 shots, not 5) with about any ammunition I have ever used in it.

Assuming you can find one you should consider a Remington 7615.
It's a .223/5.56 pump rifle based on the 870/760 family of guns that accepts standard .223/5.56 magazines:
Mine has Tru-Glo fiber optic sights:
New York State tried to ban them under the SAFE Act but that provision was ruled arbitrary and capricious.
The now discontinued 7615 is a favorite in Australia where semi-auto .223/5.56 is a no-no.

My first venture into the 223 Remington was a Sako L461 sporter in '75. Never ever considered it "genteel". And about a bagillion prairie dogs and ground squirrels really didn't think it to be genteel. Still have it, but it wears a Douglas stainless barrel chambered in 221 FireBall, a bit more genteel calibre than the 223.

THIS! I got one of these just a couple of months back .... and have plenty of twenty round AR mags that work great in it. Highly recommend if you want another in addition to your Ruger.

My 7.62x39 is blued; I can see stainless being preferred in more humid areas like yours. Definitely a fun gun.

Unfortunately they were discontinued not long after their introduction. They were meant to be a less threatening alternative for police compared to an AR15.
If one comes up on Gunbroker now they sell for about $1000

Would also like to have a Rem 7615.
Looks like a little too late!
I may buy a Lefthand 223 Rifle, probably a Savage.
I know, I said, no more rifles!
But as that Minn duffer sang,
These Times They Are A-changing.
I sold all except my Carl Gustoff 30-06.

Got to agree on the Contender in 223. With the 14" barrel, and a 7x scope, it's just plain fun and super accurate with 50-52 gr's.

Hey Caj .... I think Ruger also made the 77 in 7.62x39 but it was a limited run Williams Exclusive .... and stainless.

My alternate .223 is a Remington Mod. 700 Tactical with an appropriate scope. It shoots tiny groups with my hand loads.

The first 7.62x39 bolt-actions Ruger made was in the early 1990s: a limited edition run for Davidsons' (wholesaler). I don't remember for sure now, but the run was either 3,000 or 5,000 rifles. These were all 77 MKIIs, stainless barrels and actions and the funky black Zytel synthetic stock. I'd have to check to make sure, but I believe the bores were about .310". Regardless, they were accurate with .308 jacketed bullets and just about everything else. I bought two of these and shot them extensively with jacketed and cast bullets.
Later, (can't remember when) Ruger came out with a regular bolt-action production rifle (not the cheap one) in 7.62x39 but it did not have the stainless features as I recall. Probably as good a rifle as the original Davidsons' guns.
There was a comprehensive writeup (with extensive cast bullet data) on the original Davidsons' guns in HANDLOADER magazine #177, October , 1995.

Mine is .308. I have a case of Hornady ammo where they used Russian mild steel cases, and loaded them with their own polymer tipped bullet. Shoots great.

Platforms?
Glad to see we are talking about rifles and such, was expecting something from the oil field, though I guess .223 may be a measurement used there somewhere? 🤔

In my humble opinion declaring one rifle is "nice" and the other as "not nice" in this era of attacks on our 2nd amendment rights plays into the antis hand.

Agree the Contender with a 14” bull barrel and scope are a blast. Years ago I had one with a 4x Leupold scope. It’s one of the few guns I wish I’d kept.

Being a fan of 223, I have an inexpensive AR and a Remington 700 tactical. Been watching/looking for a 7615 for a few years now and Saturday going to Fin Fur Feather to check their pricing on Henry 'long ranger' 223.
I'm just a 'paper puncher' and 223 is easy on the shoulder, and I reload.

I have a lot of .223 and 7.62x39 on hand for my Mini-14 and AK, respectively. Last year I decided to get myself a couple of 'ban-proof' rifles in the same calibers. So, I picked up a CZ 527 FS in .223 and a 527 Carbine in 7.62x39. I really like the FS model with Mannlicher stock and wish they offered it in 7.62x39. I think all the FS models are discontinued now.

I had a couple of AR-15s many years ago, a Colt I traded a 1911 for and an Olympic Arms built from a kit. I never was that taken with ARs either and sold them both but then I built a couple more rifles when the components were dirt cheap and they are very accurate and reliable guns for only about $350 each. I have grown to like them and thought about selling one while the prices are high but things are getting so crazy in America I think I'll hang on to them and stock up on more ammo. Plus, I'm going on a guided hog hunt this weekend in Wynnewood, OK with my mens church group and some of the guys don't own a rifle so I'll bring some extra ones.

Lost my AR in a deep part of the James River, but had lots of .223 to shoot up, so I bought a CZ 527 Varmint with set trigger. I chose that rifle because they have under one minute accuracy, a fine trigger and a good barrel at a reasonable price point, and because I loved shooting a friend's CZ rifle in .204, but didn't want to get into a new caliber, esp. with lots of .223 to shoot.

I am not a fan nor detractor of the AR platform. Everybody has their “thing”.
Mine ain’t AR’s in any way shape or form. Sorry, they just do not do anything for me.
I do have a Ruger M77 MkII in 223. Had to have a trigger job done on it, but it is fun, accurate and the scourge of coyotes in the sage.
The wood stock and blued steel lend it a more passive look than an AR.

Back around 2014,IIRC, I read about the Savage AxisII in the American Rifleman, because I too wanted an easier to feed .223. It has been surprisingly good, sub MOA in its factory form with handloads. Lightweight, inexpensive and accurate. Added a 10 rd mag because I shoot informal timed bench matches with it, to avoid reloads under the clock.

Anschütz!!
If you want a truly classic beauty in .223 you'll be hard pressed to beat the Anschütz 1770 with German schnabel style stock.
They look great and shoot great!

Glad to hear all that.
Have owned Savages, they were ugly but accurate.
The Axis is one of the only Lefthand 223s available and by far the cheapest.

I have had a mini 14 forever. Mine now sports a nylon stock and a flash suppressor as well as a stiffened barrel. Have a factory AR15 as well as some made from 80 lowers, but my favorite is a heavy barreled Ruger model 77with a 4x12Redfieldand recently took an old Mohawk 600 in 222 and rebarreled it to 223. I am mostly a bolt action guy.
Unless your in a battle, you don't need an instant reload if you make the first shot count.

Got online, oh my goodness!
Overnight, Buds ran out of Savage Axis LH 223s.
I scrambled and found one at another place.
It’s a confirmed sale and headed for Phil Bozza’s house.
Soon I hope.
Now I got to figure out Bases and Rings.
Anybody?

The Browning BLR lever gun is available in .223. I had one in .22/250 years ago and it was as accurate as most bolt action rifles.

I prefer the slotted Weaver style bases over other systems. As far as rings, every scoped firearm I have has Burris Signature rings. They don't slip, won't mar scope finishes, and with the offset inserts you can compensate for any lack of scope adjustment or problems with barrel alignment.

I have the same genteel bent that you do. My first rifle in about 30 years was a Howa Mini .223 that I bought from Cabelas on a closeout for around two fiddy. How they can sell a new rifle that cheap is beyond me. I then bought another Howa 1500 HB (.223 again) and put a B&C benchrest stock on it. That one satisfied my urge to shoot tiny little quarter sized groups at 100 yds.
Never owned an AR but I do have a Ruger Mini with a red dot on it. That one was bought for the insurgency that's trending and runs to my satisfaction.
Personally I've never wanted anything but a .223/5.56. I don't hunt anymore so I don't need a big boom stick. If I can hit a softball at 200 yds that's all I'll ever want or need. I have thousands of pieces of .223/5.56 range brass that I can load if I need to. There really isn't a better rifle cartridge for utility and economy.
I don't have any #1's to sell but if I did you would be the first guy in line. Sometimes just mentioning something like that on a forum will reap rewards. It's happened to me.
