Raining Pythons
After being Pythonless for several years, I now find myself with two.
A few weeks ago I found a 2020 Python just hanging out in a nearby Sportsmans Warehouse. Its been a great gun and worthy of the Python name.
Last week I was headed up north to check out a 1962 Cobra at a pawnshop and en route I swung into a police supply place that sometimes has old service and evidence guns. I knew I was in trouble when the normally empty parking lot was nearly full. They had just put a bunch of guns out and I had missed the email.
There were a bunch of plastics, one lonely Beretta 84, and this guy in the overflow case.
Yipes. There were sharks circling, but none near the case. For once being bulky worked to my advantage as I blocked their view and tried to get someone to hand it to me before I fainted. Finally one guy got tired of my attempts to get his attention and forked it over. There's something wrong with it, he says.
Indeed. It was hard to cock, not at all Python-like. When swung out, the cylinder was hard to turn by hand. The ejector rod looked straight, and the crane showed no gap when closed. Hell with it, write it up.
Once I cleared the background I paid for it and added in a $3 bottle of Rem Oil. In the car I doused it and waited. Voila - after a minute the gunked up cylinder turned like new and all was well.
It looks new, so I doubt it was ever issued. I've got suicide guns there before, and you can usually tell right away. Maybe it was taken as evidence and just treated nicely. Who knows.
The pointy diamonds on the stocks are still pointy.
Serial number puts it at 1974. Here it is next to its 2020 descendant.
Comparing the two, the stocks on the 2020 feel much better to my hand. Too bad the laminate doesn't look as nice as the old grips.
The older one has a typically smooth, stacking action. The 2020 is just smooth, no stacking.
I'll shoot the older one tomorrow.

Nice catches, Mr. Snake Charmer.
I have a couple of "snakes," both still at my parents' house.
I was thinking about getting some original wood grips for them, but then I saw the prices they were going for.

Why RemOil? I hate RemOil. That stuff congeals.
I would use RemOil before WD-40, but not much else. I would use almost any other lubricant than RemOil.
I find RemOil to be worthy of the Rem name.

I would have bought that as well. Beautiful example that you just don't see in that condition coming from that kind of source. I follow several locations who sell police locker stuff. While I've seen a Python or two come out, none have been in good or excellent condition. Nice pick up, very jealous.

It was hanging next to the checkout, and no way was I going to endure the hour ride home without knowing if the gun was jacked. Best three bucks I ever spent.

Good going, especially on the gunked up one. 30 years ago working at a trucking company a pallet busted open and I had to retape boxes. long boxes packed with a full auto M16, a Galil, 2 pump shotguns with butt stocks cut off and 13” barrels, among many many more. The pistol boxes had Colt Python next to cheap Raven .25s. Etc., Etc...These were apparently crime guns NOT melted down and sent a dealer in Arizona. I was so glad they were put back in circulation, the legal ones that is.

I have a blue 6" Python and have long dreamed of a nice 4" to go with it. Sadly, they are now way out of my price range.
I'm jealous. Ya done good.

Nice score, especially the older Python!
Great to see the two side by side.
To my eye, the older one looks to clearly be the better made revolver. You can see a lot more nuance in contours, shaping, fitting and, of course, finish.
Also, thumbs up on the Rem Oil.
Rem Oil was a DuPont product developed back when Remington was owned by DuPont. My supply goes way back, so perhaps there's a difference today, but I've found Rem Oil to be an amazing product.
Anyhow, I'm glad you're the guy who scored that old Python. Sounds like you really appreciate it!

Sounds like a great score. Nice having a new and more vintage one. Let us know how they compare after a range trip. Thanks for sharing

Well, it looks to me like this was a two time crime gun - maybe used once before and then stolen by you! Nice piece. I have new and old 6” guns and an old 4”. The short one gets carried when I go to the hills. I bet you’ll really enjoy it.

Congrats on your find and decision to purchase.
I believe a trigger job is Okay ... to eliminate the Legacy Python trigger pull stacking.
I had it done to my Nickel Colt Python... Best $45 bucks spent that month. ( way back in time)

In 1988 at a Agency I was issued two Colts. A six inch blued Python and a nickeled two inch Cobra. The factory wood Python grips didn't feel right, so I put a pair of Hogue soft rubber combat grips on. That sold me on Hogue.
Afterward all my service revolvers I put on Hogue.

Congratulations, that was a really nice find. All my cop shop seems to have anymore are traded in .40’s. It’s been a long time since I’ve run across anything as nice as that Python in the used case.

For all the issues the first release of the "New Model Python" had I think the 6" version came out pretty well. Just got mine in CA courtesy of the "single action exemption". I didn't care for the new grips but had a set of Deer Hollow reproductions on hand. I think they're the best made repros out there.
Colt Python 2nd generation grips, 1960-1973 – Deer Hollow Enterprises, LLC
The finish on the NW Python is much closer to polished nickel than is shown in most photos I've seen.
They were going on an OM Trooper but I found an original set. The new Python carries silver medallions so I figure this keeps thing right.
I have an original 8" nickel Pyton in 38 Special and a Dan Wesson Model 15. Will be interesting to see how the NW Python measures up.
$1,200.00 is a fantastic deal on the legacy Python. Pays to know a bit about how they work and make right something others may have passed on.

For $1200 how could you go wrong? Bet that will be one sweet Python after a good cleaning and proper lubrication and, yes, you could easily get $2000+ for it.

Congratulations. Color me jealous.
I bought one several years ago now, for $800.00. They were going normally for 12-1400 I believe. This one looked a little rough, but I thought I would be a good shooter anyway.
On the way home, like you, I couldn't stand it. My wife wanted a cup of coffee, so we stopped at a 7-11. She got coffee, I got a can of WD-40 and a roll of paper towels. I sprayed the Python down with the WD and started wiping. Years of dried oil, dirt, and general crud rolled off. The inner workings smoothed out.
At home it got Gunscubbered, oiled internally, then Flitzed and Ren Waxed. I can't say it looked like brand new, but it looked like a different gun.
Alas, I had to sell it a couple years later when I lost my job and needed the money. It went to a young Marine just back from the Sandbox. I'm sure he enjoyed it as much as I did.
I've replaced it, with a pair of 2020 Pythons, but I wish I still had that blue one to go with them.

Remington Oil is used by so many because it dries leaving behind a thin coat of teflon.Especially good for actions for long term storage. Not sure how it’s not working for you.

I always liked that Remington bore cleaner that had the abrasive in it. Sure wish I could find some.

You should have told the supply place that they needed to reduce the price since it was hard to cock and turn the cylinder.

Well, it shoots as expected.
100 rounds of foreign .357s (Fiocchi and Aguila), all went off with the appropriate sound and fury.
It definitely made me appreciate the grips on the 2020, as homely as they are. The double raised cheese-grater panels on this one really got my attention.

Got to love it when you roll the dice on a potential issue or non-functional firearm only to end up with a beautiful revolver that shoots like this. If you don't like those cheese grater factory grips you could always replace them and sell them for $300! Further reducing the amount of money you have in this police confiscated python. I say that jokingly. She shoots great now I'm even more jealous of your find!

$1200
Raining Pythons here too. I accumulated these 3 in as many weeks. I am not a big Colt collector, but sometimes stuff happens.
Nonetheless, I am happy too have them in my accumulation.

Rem Oil will set up so firm it will stiffen an action and then requires another lubricant to loosen it up.
USMC got me started on Break Free CLP and I've been using it ever since.
I bought a very nice Winchester 1886 from a reputable GB seller. When I received it, I thought the barrel and mag tube had been cold blued. As I started wiping it with CLP, it eventually started breaking down and coming off. That's when I realized it was Rem Oil. Not my first run in with it.

A 4" blued Python is my Grail Gun. I was following one on Gunbroker recently, had pitting on the side plate, rubber grips, German proof marks and an import mark. Still went for $1800.......

Most of my years on the police department I carried a 4" Python. I think I paid $ 350 for it like new. I used a lined Safariland holster so very little wear. It was replaced by a Sig 228 issued by my department. That was about 40 years ago.
Still has very little holster wear. It sits in my safe with another 4" blue Python. I hope my son and daughter appreciate them after I pass.

Raining Pythons
Beautiful catch on that deep blue Python!
I was late to the game but truly enjoy these two. A 6” nickel from 1978 and a 2.5” from 1988 wearing some Grashorn’s.
