Default One less Python at the Vegas show

There were several 4 and 6 inch pythons to choose from at this weekend’s show in Vegas, with prices ranging from $1599 to $1875; I walked away with a 4” for $1525 OTD.

What else was happening at the show? Has ammo come down any? How much are they stinging you for entry and parking these days.

I must admit I had totally missed there was a show in town. It might explain why my FFL has not contacted me to pick up a gun I know has arrived at their store.

It’s very small. If I wasn’t looking for a Python I wouldn’t have came. No interesting Smiths. The Parrot was a crazy impulse buy.

9 and 556 have come down, but seems like everything else is still stupid high. Primers are $150

That sure is a nice-looking gun. You ever gonna shoot it? I'm just curious how these guns perform, as I haven't heard anything bad lately. Barely $1500 OTD sounds like a pretty good buy. Congrats! Jeff

Thanks! Yes, I am pleased with the price - it pays to bundle if possible.

I plan to shoot it later this morning. I bought it to ccw. Definitely no safe queen. The new Pythons definitely lack the panache of the classic python’s royal blue or nickel finish, but they have a warranty and easily obtainable replacement parts. I also like having the ability to readily change the front sight.

We've got three of them now. One 6" and two 4" models. (My wife had to have one of her own.) Between the three we've got about 1000 rounds through them. Most, about 800 have been through the 6" one. That gun was one of the first to hit the market early last year. It's S/N is in the < 3000 range. That one, at about 500 rounds jammed up on me slightly. I found the sideplate screws had loosened, so I tightened them with a screwdriver, and 300 rounds later, the problem has not returned. I did not use any Locktite or anything else.

I also experience the occasional light strike with that gun, especially when using my reloads with CCI primers. When using Federal primers, or factory ammo, no light strikes. Colt has stated they addressed both of those problems with later guns and that seems to be the case judging by the other two I have, which are later S/N's.

The two 4" ones I haven't shot as much because of the Covid. I just don't get to the range as much but we have fired both and have seen no indication that the screws are loosening at all, but I make sure I have a screwdriver handy in my range bag just in case. There have been no light strikes with the two 4" guns.

My wife and I both shoot them pretty well. I freely admit that I'm not a very good shot. 7-10 yards is about my self-imposed limit, but at those ranges, I seem to shoot them better than other guns.

The D/A triggers are the best I've ever experience in an out of the box gun. They just beg to be fired in D/A mode, something I don't normally do, but other than a few rounds S/A with the first gun, it's all been D/A with them.

All three really like 38 wadcutters. I use a 148 grain Berry's plated WC over the standard charge of Bullseye. Magnums are no problem. They shoot well, and recoil is controllable.

There is one thing I don't like about them, and that's the rear sight. It's not a BAD sight, but it requires a small allen wrench (NOT included) to make adjustments. There are a couple of tiny lock screws that need to the loosened/tightened to adjust the sight. Something to watch out for.

I'd like to have a blue one.

I took my new Python (serial #23XXX) out to the desert to see how she compared to the classics. I found the SA/DA trigger pull smooth, but too heavy - much more so than I remember from SHOT Show media day. I understand this may be due to heavier springs be added to fix issues they were having with light primer strikes. Moreover, like the classic pythons, I would much prefer a wider and smooth trigger. The trigger definitely could stand to have its sharp edges broken a little. The new trigger also still stacks, but it seems to happen at the very end of the DA pull, unlike the classic that starts much earlier. Another bummer is the lack of aftermarket springs and ignition system parts. Guess I’ll just have to lighten things up the old fashioned way, shooting it.

Aesthetically she’s a beauty, the apple definitely didn’t fall far from the tree. Although it went bang every time, it was as accurate from 3-25 yards as my classic pythons, and it’s very well put together, it’s still lacks a certain something. Perhaps it’s the semi-brite stainless finish, new font on the barrel markings, I just can’t put my finger on it. However, it is definitely a Python and it was worth the wait while they sorted out the bugs with the first 3500 examples. I am looking forward to adding it to my ccw rotation.

Got this one in a private sale about a month ago. Well made, well finished. Colt has this one right.

A Python in that condition for under 2k is a steal, let alone one for $1525, beautiful gun man, congratulations!
