Default Update on returned Springfield Armory 1911 Stolen

As many of you know I had a burglary 14 May 2020 and had 11 firearms stolen, 3 of which were recovered with 8 more to go....

The update to all of this is the Springfield Armory 1911A1 "Loaded" that was returned by the State of Texas was scratched up a LOT.

I called Springfield Armory to see about either buffing out or re-finishing with the original phosphate type of coating as the gun was about 99% when it was stolen.

SA did an exquisite job on the refinish in a very short time (2 weeks) and only charged me $200 total which included shipping both ways AND they returned it in a correct hardshell carry case at NO CHARGE!!

The invoice also expressed their sadness for my loss.....

I am duly impressed!!!

Will attach before and after shots.....

Randy

I've been tossing around getting a 1911 for myself as a retirement present and liked the Springfield (just didn't know much about it). Thank you for the post because it just moved them up on my list!

I had 23 guns stolen in 1985. A 3.5" 27-2, a 29-2, a Python, DWM Luger, some good stuff. Cops recovered 3 in the first year. Cops 200 miles away recovered another 18 years after the burglary. Just 19 to go.

Dang! Sorry for your loss. I think the odds of getting any stolen firearm returned are fairly slim.

Default Stolen firearms!

Not specific to this thread but a warning!

I had a S/A 1911 stolen while in transit by UPS!

They admitted that there was an internal ring of criminals changing labels and sending firearms to alternate addresses! To make a long story short, the shipper does not have to report the serial number of stolen firearm! I took it upon myself to report it to the local sheriff since I had the serial number! It took 4 months for the shipper to replace the gun.

According to S/A there are 300-400 firearms stolen per month while in transit! This was about 10 years ago!

You already know this but ....! Be sure to keep detailed records of all firearms with photos including accessories.

Crazy,

I bought a Texas Ranger commemorative in the box , etc. Owned it 10 years and decided to sell it. I put it on consignment with a LGS. In Austin all guns that have been pawned or put on consignment are run thru the stolen gun list, I got a a call from the Austin police that my gun had shown up stolen from 15 years ago. After waiting 3 years for the police to come and pick up the gun, I called and ask what the hold up was. They told me that they had informed the Insurance Co. that had listed it stolen and would contact them again. The insurance agent came and it turns out the lady that had the gun stolen didn't want it back. She had spent the insurance money years ago. I offered to buy it but the agent told me that the only sell to people with an FFl. 4 years later I saw that revolver at a LGS and I wonder if they had the gun checked out and it was no longer on the stolen list. Over the years I have purchased 3 stolen firearms at Pawn shops. Two have returned my money but one had a new owner and he just said tough luck. All firearms are supposed to be checked out by APD when they were pawned, don't know how these fell thru the cracks.

How can that happen? Pawns cannot list for sale "serial numbered" items without certification clearing them as not reported as stolen. It seems they will hold items for 30 days pending clarification! As I recall 20 years ago (I've been retired 15 years) our department recovered some firearms from pawn that were on the stolen list while being held, pending!

Same with recovered firearms held in police custody! They are held pending proof of ownership! Keep meticulous records and photos!

Of course some items might take years to get reported as stolen! Some firearms get recorded incorrectly using "part number" Vs. "Serial Number"!

Default helpful hints!!!!!!

Hey guys, Ive taken several reports of stolen firearms over the years.... One thing that stuck out was the victim who took photos of the firearms, including identifying scratches, and marks. He also took close photos of the serial and model numbers, including photos of him holding the firearm. Often times he would engrave his name on the wood grip, or drill a small hole in the stock of a rifle/shotgun and insert business card also. All this information was stored on 3 different hard drives. His best friend also had a copy of the information. One day thieves stole a model 60 out of his pick up truck.... I took the report and days later the revolver was located several hundred miles away.....The thief stated he bought it from a friend. The photos were proof the 'smith was not his...... Charges of Theft of a Firearm were brought , conviction followed he spent time at Uncle Buds cotton farm... for 2 years.

Just an idea!!!!

Reading all of these posts, the most important lesson is to buy a good safe and store your guns there.

At a drug deal gone bad there was a shoot out. I was assigned to the victim/suspect that was shot! I began the investigation on the way to the hospital and through booking. The 9mm severed the large bone in his upper left arm. Not sure if it was saved!

I ran the serial number on the Berretta 21A (.22 cal!) he was seen to have used. It came back registered to another Deputy! I called and asked the Deputy to check his safe! Apparently his son sold it for drugs!

Although it wasn't reported stolen our department required Deputies to "register" all their hand guns in the "state data base"! This was a voluntary registration to expedite recovery.

Yup, can happen in any family even with a safe!

I'm sure Thanksgiving was a riot!

Smiles,

It would be nice if there was an efficient way for the public to check stolen on firearms before making a purchase.

BTW, I’m not surprised about Springfield Armory treating the OP right, they seem to have made a habit out of good customer service. (I enjoy reading good things about people that go the extra mile, they earn our loyalty.)

I don't have a lot of firearms, but they all go bang. Only a couple are of sentimental value, as well as fairly worth more than their average counterparts, but living in the city, I doubt they'd go far as well as I doubt I'd get them back. Keeping them as hard as possible to steal is my best chance. Anything can be stolen, though. I recently posted about a one-year-old baby getting killed here by a stray shot through a house or apt. wall. If that were my stolen gun, I don't know what I'd do. I sure wouldn't want to know, and I don't believe the police will tell you anyhow. I suppose this would be a good day to update my list. Or tomorrow when football is on!!!
BTW, on this same note, I have taken down my full-sized Gadsden NRA Flag, as it says "Hey, thief, there are guns in this house!" I'm in a nice 'hood, good neighbors, dead-end (or Cul de sac street, which makes it classier!) street, but my cars have been broken into twice in 16 years; alarms by-passed, so time to upgrade my security and guns list.
