A Gen 1 Glock 17 went for $9550.00 at auction. It received 42 bids and it looks like 6 different buyers were in the game up to $7K, including a well respected dealer!

You could have a nice Registered Mag, a couple of Pythons or a Barrett 82A1 for that money. What is this world coming to????

That is a very early one ....but still. I bought and carried a gen one from 87-91 and I sold it to a buddy for $250.

Shocks me too, but apparently the early Austrian Gen 1 guns are highly prized by the Glock fanboys out there. So much so that Glock just introduced a limited run of new Gen 1s that is getting a lot of Glock folks jazzed up.

Those are the same folks who look at a great S&W wheel gun and go "yuck". To each his own.

I have a Gen1, but not because I am a fan of Glocks. Rather this one is more homage to Heller and his attorney Alan Gura. It is marked "MPDC" on the slide indicating it was formerly the property of the DC Metropolitan Police department.

I like to imagine the anguish that Mayor Fenty and the DC council were forced to endure by having to sell those guns as surplus so they could pay the legal fees awarded to Gura. Doubtless they would have rather former PD guns were scrapped rather than commercial channels and thereby to the great unwashed.

The only way I would buy a Gen 1 Glock is if it were real cheap.
Obviously I am not a "Glock collector".

Very Early Glocks are easy to convert to Glock 18 mode.

I remember the very first Glocks available in the US, and something about the LE community getting them at 50% retail. I thought $450 (retail) or so for a plastic gun was excessive and didn't give them much thought.

I think this post is also instructive in the sense that our S & W semi-auto collector colleagues may eventually outnumber the revolver group. Not soon but eventually.

Like 'em, hate 'em, or in between; they were game changers. Early models of anything that are successful will have a group of collectors.

This reminds me of an experience I had with Glock years ago. I had purchased an early Glock 21 in .45ACP and found the frame to have a very small crack in the polymer so I returned it to Glock for repair/replacement. When they returned it to me with a new frame the serial number did not match the slide and barrel. I called and spoke to their service department to try to explain the importance (to me) that the parts match. I remember the rep telling me "these pistols will never have any collector value, we literally make tens of thousands of the same model." Haha...wonder if he saw that listing for the Gen 1 17?

Crazy.

Because of this thread I contacted the guy I sold My Gen 1 to. He said he just qualified with it last week. I think I sold it to him in 1991, so he is still carrying and qualifying with it 29 years later.

Collectable Glock...sounds like an oxymoron. But, a gun person is a gun person.

Glock fanboys have no shame. Just like the "new" P80 Glock. Paying stupid money for a reproduction of 30 year old technology. Just boggles my mind and I've owned about a dozen Glocks myself...

Gen1 Glocks have gone crazy. Highlighted by the fact that Glock has “reintroduced” the P80/Gen1 17 (though lacking several true Gen1 features). The only Glock is fork over serious coin for is a Gen1 19.

Some Might Say.

The most surprising part about it is that recently Lipsey's and Glock teamed up to release a Limited Edition re-release of the Glock 17 in it's original Austrian Military Trials configuration, which was only priced at $599, and as far as I know they're still available.
So even if you were just madly in love with the Glock 17 Gen 1 for some reason, you could easily get one of the Lipsey's Glock 17s for a mere fraction of the cost.

A collectable Glock is pretty amazing considering the relatively short period that Glocks have been on the market. I wonder, has S&W produced anything "collectable" in the recent 25 - 30 years?

The only exception to what I posted is, I see where it was imported by a well know dealer ( and knowledgeable collectable gun guy) at the Minot AFB. Suppose he knows something ???

I collect Smith & Wesson Model 1's and Glocks unashamedly.

There was once a time when just about every gun was "just another gun," and nobody could have imagined collecting it.

This particular gun is one of the earliest of the early guns; the AE### Glock serial number is a bit like finding a Model 1, 1st Issue, 1st Variant in the Smith & Wesson world.

I have nothing but respect for Glock. Almost overnight they injected much-needed energy into an industry that had hung its hat on tradition and "we've always done it that way" attitudes for far too long. I take a Glock with me on every range trip, and they shoot unfailingly well.

I wouldn't pony up $10K on an early Glock because I'd rather pony up the same money for a very early Model 1. But I certainly understand the sentiments of those that do. There are a very small number of these early guns still in circulation (and precious few in this good condition), so it's no wonder that the market has driven up the prices.

One other thought ...

... this gun actually pre-dates Glock in the United States. It is import marked on the bottom of the trigger guard, but with a gun this rare it's certainly not going to hurt its value.

It also includes the original internals, which on the very early guns were black. It also includes the un-captured recoil spring. The box appears original and is serial numbered to the gun.

So not only is it a rare gun to begin with, but it includes most or all of its original internals, the original box and tools, etc.

It's worth remembering that most of these guns saw a hard life of duty service, so to find one like this in such unmolested condition is almost impossible.

It may not be worth $10K to the people here, but in the world of Glock collecting I'm not surprised that it pushed bidding that high.

Had a G17 Gen 1, bought used from a friend in the mid-'80's when they were in the news for 'going undetected through airport metal detectors'. (BS)

Found it would even run my 'cull' reloads that shouldn't feed in anything.
Shot it some in IPSC, carried for OD some.
But in our hot, humid Summers that pebble grain grip finish was slick as a wet soap bar in the hands. IIRC, I even placed a section of cut bike inner tube over it - helped some.
No one had come up with 'stippling' them then.

It went away in a trade. Never thought I'd see Gen 1's achieve any sort of popularity after successive Generations debuted.

I gave my Gen 1 M17 to my son several years ago and during informal shooting matched with his buddys in the 75th Fighter Squadron he cleans their clocks. They are shooting SIG 9mm's and custom 1911's. He always enjoys a good laugh at their expense. Tom has always been a great shot (much better than me). He's also a great shot with the 30mm Avenger mounted on his A-10 Warthog.

Years ago I stopped by a shop near where I lived and in the case they had a Gen 1 17L with the original solid barrel, a ported Glock barrel, both in the Tupperware box, and a complete G17 upper. As I recall they were $550. Glock said the 17L was one of the first 1000 imported into the US.

I sold the G17 upper for $200 to a friend that wanted to convert a G22 to 9mm.

Fast forward several years where I put the 17L, extra barrel, and box on consignment at another shop. The owner thought someone would bite if it was priced at $750. It sat there.

A few months later they bought back a gently used M&P .40 Pro Series. (Original owner didn't like the recoil.) I asked the dealer if they'd trade the G17L for the M&P straight across and they said, "Yup." I believe they dropped the price on the 17L and it finally sold.

I thought you needed a gray blanket to sell guns at crazy prices?

I like them a lot (just look at my username), and I own a bunch of them. The first handgun I bought was a Glock 17. But the idea of "collector" Glocks is just silly. They are all exactly the same gun whether it was made in 1986 or 2020. Just small differences; grip textures, finishes, etc. Now that the Gen 1 has been reintroduced, why overpay for an old one?

People will pay outrageous money for something like a G22C RTF2 because the production numbers were so low. The reality is Glock could start producing them again tomorrow for whatever reason, or you could piece one together with parts. Again, they're just not that special from an individual standpoint. The most unique one I have is one of the 2009 Austrian proof marked 19's that came in during the Obama scare. Paid $350 for it when I worked part time at a gun shop. Some people pay big money for those too. While it's cool to me, I wouldn't have given more than $400 for it, its just a Glock 19. There's millions of them out there, every one just like the next, and they make more every day.

Most 3rd Gen S&W's are headed that way, if not there already. Not like you can go out and buy a brand new current production 1006. I can understand collector value with something that hasn't been produced in 25 years and never will be again.

A Glock 17 doesn't fit that bill

In about 1984 or 85, I was a firearms instructor for my department and one day a Glock rep showed up at the range showing off the new Glock 17. I believe they were trying to get into the law enforcement market and he was offering this Glock to department firearms instructors for, I believe, 125.00. It was brand new and the serial # was AAAxxx and was, I am sure, a first generation. I did not have the money to purchase one but my fellow instructor did and to the best of my knowledge he never carried it and the Glock became a safe queen. I will pass this info on to him....wish I had the money at the time!!!

Buyer was a GCA (Glock Collector Assn.) member no doubt.
Glocks are good at what they are but I'd sell every Glock (9) I own for that amount...

Its the future of collecting. This one probably brought to much maybe auction fever? Early Glocks have been collectable for some time now.

Values of collectable change with time, the value is more of a wave that a ramp.

The internals of the new P80 are said to be Gen 3. For the money I'd be tempted to get one except I bought a G19X.

I think of Glock like the Tesla of the gun world. Gaston wasn't a gun guy tied to tradition so he and his team did first principles engineering, what can we do with modern materials and fabrication practices? Set the standard for modern handguns, it turned out.
