Default NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE

An elderly friend of mine down the street is selling his collection and one of the guns he has is an Inland M1 carbine. I know absolutely nothing about these guns but trying to help him. The gun appears to be in really good shape with slight bluing loss at end of muzzle.Seems to be mechanically sound. I think stock has been refinished but not sure. From my research, the serial number falls within the ranges assigned in 1945. At the end of the barrel, on top, just before front sight it says "INLAND MFG DIV", under that is "GENERAL MOTORS", and under that " 1-45".
I would appreciate any info you may have to offer and opinions on value of gun as they are all over the place on completed auctions on GB.

Thank you in advance and have a Blessed Day!

Only regret when I got mine a couple of years ago is that I didn't buy one 30 years ago!

Mine also is an Inland, dates 3/44 I think. Works flawless.

You really should try to pick up this one ...... $1000 and up would be my guess but I'm really not an authority on them.

The receiver does date to early 1945, so the barrel and receiver are probably original. That’s almost certainly been through a rebuild, but I don’t see any markings on the stock (besides the painted rack #). Look for any stamping on the stock and provide photos.

Early MI Carbines had a fixed flip rear sight, a skinny barrel band with no bayonet lug, a flat bolt, a two rivet handguard and a push button safety. Late war guns had a machined adjustable rear sight (like that one) and a wide barrel band without a bayonet lug. Post war rebuilds had a stamped rear sight, an M2 magazine catch and a wide barrel band with a bayonet lug. Without getting my books out, I’m not sure when the round bolt, 4 rivet handguard and flip safety came into play. It’s generally assumed that no guns with a bayonet lug saw service in WWII.

The vast majority of guns went through a rebuild. Original configuration guns are rare and valuable and can top $2500. Someone who knows what they’re looking at needs to pull that gun apart and look at all the marking. Stocks were marked in the rear sling cut, handguard were marked on the inside and virtually all the component parts were marked. When guns went through a rebuild, they didn’t worry about matching manufacturer parts, so you’ll typically find parts from a variety of manufacturers.

I wouldn’t suggest selling it, without knowing how much is actually Inland and what’s been replaced. The premier book on M1 Carbines is War Baby by Larry Ruth and it’s worth buying if you’re going to buy or sell Carbines.

Looks like a typical post war rebuild in an M2 stock (the cutout for the selector is visible to the left of the bolt head looking down from above the receiver). The rack number on the pistol grip is common on mid 90's era re-imports from Korea, although stocks can be swapped and this gun is in markedly better condition than most of those. Check under the barrel near the muzzle for an importers stamp like "Arlington Ordnance", "Alpine", or "Blue Sky". With an importer's mark this is an 850.00-1000.00 carbine, without, 1000.00 to 1200.00.

The flat/dished bolt is most likely the original bolt, but the bayonet lug would be a latter addition from a rebuild or just a refinishing of the stock. The rear sight is the later model (by Lyman) and while date appropriate, it is way too far left. It also has the push button safety also date appropriate (and more desirable).

Someone may have had an Aim Point or scope base in the rear sight dovetail. Snoop around and see if you can find it, The early model was what was used on the failed Son Tay rescue mission, and are very collectable!

Ivan,
I blew that photo up and had a good look at it. Are you sure that's not a flip safety?

Here's a photo of my original Inland showing the early push button safety.

I agree; somewhere near a grand give or take $200 depending upon the factors mentioned above (parts mix, stock markings, import marks, etc.).

Many genuine stocks have no stampings at all. Others have several.

Nice inland yes it has been rebuilt most were I would say anywhere between $800 and $1200 would be fair market value.

I will echo some other posts and say $800 if it has an import stamp, up to $1,200 with no stamp. The M-1 Carbine is a terrific rifle, I have several.

I wouldn't say that. The inspector stamp on a lot of original stocks is no longer visible because of wear or refinishing, but you'll usually find the manufacturer mark in the rear sling cut.

This stock was made for Inland by Overton Company.
NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE-000_5705-jpg

Same for the handguard.
NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE-000_5738-jpg

Carbine stocks were originally stamped by a US ordinance inspector (crossed cannons) signifying that they passed inspection. The stamps used at the various manufacturers were unique and had subtle differences to distinguish them from the other contractors. Sometimes there were additional inspector stamps.

Here's the stamp used at Inland.
NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE-000_5671-jpg

Stocks also had a "circle-P" stamp on the grip flat or inside radius:
NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE-000_5666-jpg

Guns that went through a rebuild were often marked to designate the facility that performed the rebuild.

This Saginaw Steering Gear carbine from the Irwin Pederson plant in Grand Rapids (S'G') was rebuilt at Augusta Arsenal and approved by inspector "K".

NEED SOME HELP ON AN INLAND M1 CARBINE-000_4052-jpg

I believe the "P" stamp without the circle signifies proofing after rebuild, but I've heard conflicting explanations.

Unfortunately, there are reproduction stamps and fraudulently marked guns out there. It's a good idea to have someone really in the know inspect the gun first hand and offer their opinion.

Your Carbine look mostly correct for 1945 issue. NOTE ...I would Never show the full SN of any weapon I own, there are 3 major reasons for not showing it ...I wont go into detail but ahhh ask around the internet for the answer.

I've been collecting USGI M1 carbines for 30 years. I bet that's a pretty nice shooter, and since the barrel and receiver seem to match up it could be a potential fun project gun to bring back to original WWII era configuration.

Since it's very late Inland, the milled rear sight and the "AI" marked type III barrel band are consistent with original configuration. The stock and flip safety are replacements. It would be interesting to disassemble this one and see what markings the slide and trigger housing group indicate, which could impact pricing.

Frankly, I'm not seeing a $1000+ carbine here though. That's probably the price tag it'd have on it sitting on a gun show table, but someone would more likely walk out the door with it in the $700 - $800 range.

Although I agree that Larry Ruth's book is one of the best reference books on USGI M1 carbines, it sells these days for around a hundred bucks. If you really want to know what you've got in this carbine I recommend Craig Riesch's excellent reference book "U.S. M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" for around $25.

S&WChad:

I'll stand by my statement that many legitimate stocks lack markings. If marks were sanded off during armory re-work, that has no bearing.

Further, from The U.S. Caliber .30 Carbines "During WWII most, but not all, stocks & handguards had manufacturer markings. After WWII many stocks & handguards did not have a manufactrers mark."

Persoanlly, I'm much more comfortable seeing marks on any carbine stock that interests me, and find them more desireable.

After looking it over more closely, I did find these numbers and letters stamped in sling cut. Looks like 8/57 on right hand bottom, so maybe that is when the gun was refurbished?
Also, it is a flip up safety. See attached pic.

Those don't appear to be typical US arsenal markings that I've ever seen. Could be a Korean or Israeli replacement stock, hard to tell from the pictures, but I'd say (without holding it in my hands) that it's a birch wood replacement stock. I've seen a lot of Korean M2 potbelly replacement stocks made from birch wood come back to the USA from Korea back in the 1990's.

Did your elderly friend say when he acquired this one? Any import markings stamped on the underside of the barrel or on the right side of the receiver?

I have a "Blue Sky" Inland date 4/44. I imagine it going ashore at Omaha Beach.

Once again, I don't know three reasons to hide serials. The one I hear is someone could report it stolen and try to claim it. That would involve at least two felonies and cops aren't stupid.

What are the other two reason?

No import markings anywhere and he got it from his father-in-law about 30 years ago who had a gun shop but was not in the military.

Here is a video that explains a lot about imports.

Video: WWII Era M1 Carbine Unboxing (Original US Manufacturers)

The fact that your friends carbine doesn't appear to be an import I would price it around 1K. Non imports reached that price a few years ago. Be aware that the CMP has no more carbines (non-imports) for sale and the private market is about the only place to find one. The reason prices are all over board.

Thank you! Interesting that in the video, the bayonet lug was standard even on the 2 Inlands they started out with dated 44 and 43.

Not sure they were original on those. I have the references and can look. Maybe someone here knows when they added the BL from the factory. I have an early 43 Inland (6 digit) and the BL was on it when I bought it. I think, as others have said, that unless it was stolen or some other very unusual situation, it went thru a rebuild and got the BL along with the other mods. Not very many missed the rebuild. Those are rare and if truly original bring some nice premiums. Unfortunately there are many attempts at forgeries.

That’s a NATO stock number.
1005- indicates a small arms part and 50- indicates it’s from W. Germany. The date code is hard to make out, but it looks like 8/59.

You’ll find more info here: U.S. Carbines in Germany and Austria

That’s not correct. The US didn’t adopt the type III barrel band with the bayonet lug until the very end of the war. It’s generally acknowledged that none saw service.

The “M” on the magazine release button signifies it’s an M2 magazine catch designed for use with 30 round magazines. The smaller letters next to the “M” is the manufacturers code.

I have 2 Garands, one a 1944 Springfield and one a 1955 HRA. Also a 1944 1911. All from the CMP. I really want a WW 2 Carbine.

I'd say it's in the +/- $1000 range today. Inland was the largest manufacturer of M1 carbines and the most commonly encountered. Some manufacturers are rarities, and the Winchester-made carbines are perhaps the most desirable even though not rare. Nearly all M1 carbines were refurbished and upgraded after WWII and put into storage. The most common upgrades were the addition of the bayonet stud, the change in the safety, and the addition of a click-adjustable rear peep sight. Most also received new wooden stocks. An all-original WWII carbine which has not been upgraded is a relative rarity, and is a pretty good indicator that it was a GI duffelbag bringback after WWII.

One of the largest Army depots for M1 Carbine rebuilding after WWII was right here in San Antonio, at the San Antonio Arsenal, located just south of downtown San Antonio. The arsenal buildings still remain, now the corporate HQ of the H-E-B supermarket chain.

Thank all of you so much!! I have learned a lot and now have an idea of what the gun is worth. I will get with my friend and let him know and go from there.
Again, Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it!

To the OP ..... did you get this one bought?

Your thread sparked my interest in mine again and yesterday I put 150 rounds down the tube. Always a joy to shoot and they always get looks and comments at the range!
