Default Soft spot for P239’s

Ever since I first shot a P239, I’ve really had a soft spot for them. My main semi-auto EDC is a P239 in .357sig and I bought another in .40S&W about a year ago, which gave me dual caliber utility. I could swap the barrels around and have either an ergonomic rubber grip or a fancy rosewood grip. Today I found one in 9mm, and although I’ve never been a fan of 9mm (the only other 9 I own is the second barrel that came with my .22TCM 1911), I could hardly pass this one up for $400 with 4 mags and two holsters. I think I’ll pop right down to Wally World and pick up a couple of boxes of ammo...LOL...J/K

Wish I had kept that set of 9mm dies I gave away with my Lee press. I’ll have to pick up a set at the gun show this weekend. I’ve got a line on some brass and I’ve got plenty of 9mm flat points that I load for .357sig.

Here’s my new 9mil and my trio of P239’s:

I almost bought one a while ago. Something about them I like.

I bought one from a good friend that was 100% made in Germany, only 1 of 50 allowed in the US.

Wearing G10 grips:

I really wanted one of these for Concealed Carry, but unfortunately SIG discontinued it and replaced it with the P365 which doesn't even come chambered in anything but 9mm Luger, and was plagued with so many issues at launch that any interest I might have had in it was lost.

Ultimately, I ended up getting a Ruger LCP, but on the bright side, I've come to really like it, plus it helped me to overcome my biased against polymer framed pistols.

Me, too. The Sig P239 was on my short list of compact 9mms I wanted to get when I was shopping around, but being discontinued took it off my list.

Quite a few years ago, over 10 years ago, when the Sig P239 SAS DAK first came out in .40S&W, I really wanted to get one. Handled one in the store, loved the trigger. Came really close to getting one, but for the same price I could get a Glock 23, mags, ammo, and carry gear, so that's what I ended up getting. Sold it a few years ago.

Why would you let the fact that a gun has been discontinued deter you from owning it? It’s a simple design, not much to go wrong with it. Sig will still service it if need be and parts can be found through Numrich and Brownells. Mags aren't that hard to come by. I’ve got seven .357sig mags and six .40’s (you can use the .40’s with .357, but not viceversa). I’ll look for some 9mm mags at the show this weekend.

The P239 AND 357SIG are meant to go together

I can not recall when I shot my first P239, but it was well over two decades ago.

My first contact with the 357SIG cartridge was when Texas DPS was testing the cartridge in the mid 90s. At the time I was working in Dallas County. I was hooked.

I think I bought my first P229 in 1995. Not too long after that the P239 was introduced, I am thinking 1997

Well I have several of them today. All of them are chambered for the 357SIG cartridge. I never even considered 40S&W for these firearms

The second one from the top (with the 405#) is my Texas DPS P239. These were first issued in 2001 or 2002. The bottom P239 in the photo is not stainless, it is hard chrome from Accurate Plating and Weaponry.

For the 2000 Olympics SIG made 125 of these. This P239 shipped with standard grips, but I found this set of Concalo Alves grips on display at Hogue's SHOT show booth

This Factory original satin nickel P239 was plated for SIG by ROBAR. I added the NILLs grips

This is a Factory original two tone. In the early days the two tone's slide and controls were all nickel plated for a matching finish. The more modern two tone P239s are just a bare stainless slide with black controls. I added the HOGUE Kingwood grips

The only other caliber barrel that I own for my P239s is a factory original 9MM threaded barrel so that I can shoot it suppressed. Originally this was on a second two tone P239, but a close buddy of mine just had to have one of them

I do not recall when it occurred, but one of the agencies convinced SIG to make the P239 magazine one round longer with an extended base pad. These LEO mags were phosphate coated for corrosion resistance. We got them in a big box with the mags in heat sealed bags.

I really like the 8 round magazines, but SIG overestimated the LEO demand and eventually sold them off to the civilian market. Many of the phosphate tubes with the 8th round witness hole were even assembles into 7 round magazines. The extended basses were then sold separately for use on any of the P239 magazines

I confess, I am a BIG fan of the 357SIG cartridge

You do not need 9MM magazines.

The 357SIG mags work 100%. I have more than 1000 rounds of 9MM down range with just my original mags. I know other shooters that have many more than that.

I have also enjoyed my P239’s and am still searching for a .357 SIG barrel for my .40...

I have a like/dislike relationship with SIG Ps.

I like how they feel in my hand, but the trigger (even the SRT) seems a bit heavy to taste. A stock Beretta DA/SA is a bit better IMO.

The controls are positioned awkwardly. During stress shooting, I find myself furiously thumbing the decocker to release the slide. True, I could fix this with training if I cared, and I have been trying to slingshot rather than drop the slide lock.

I do like the DAK trigger versions. They fix both issues, and I shoot them better because they are basically a flat revolver.

I've got my DA/SA P229 up for sale right now, but my DAK P226 will stay under the bed.

That said, I like the idea of a DAK P239 in .40 or .357. There aren't many slim, compact guns with a larger bore than 9mm.

I traded into 9mm P239 a few years ago. Immediately fell in love with it. Great shooter, compact and easy to carry. I came close to making it my new EDC.
But then I realized that its only very slightly smaller than my Colt Commander .45acp. I still carry the Colt.

Only pic I have includes a few friends.

I bought a P239 9mm a few years ago, I only wish I would have purchased some spare mags when they were availabble at a reasonable price.

In the 90's I replaced my Walther PPK .380 I had bought for my wife to carry but the trigger pull was too much for her.
Bought the Sig 239 in .40 and it was easy for her to shoot well, so she carried it in the car. She can really shoot it, very accurate.
I even carried it as a backup on the force. I like and shoot it so well I'll never sell it.
I'm impressed with the wooden grips shown above and may get some. Have a IWB Mitch Rosen Versa Carry that makes it disappear.
My German Robared Sig 220and the 239 are both super reliable.

I carried a tricked out Stainless Commander on duty for awhile until the mayor saw that it was cocked and locked in my holster and said it would frighten the citizen. I even had Ivory grips on it. Jeez!

Lack of consistent availability, irregular pricing, inability to find any locally, general inconveniences.

I'm the kind of person who likes things to go as simply, as smoothly, and as quickly as possible, especially when it comes to things like firearms in which filling out paperwork is involved.

Unfortunately, by the time that SIG had discontinued the P239, they had become practically unobtainable locally, difficult to find online, and prices online were stupid, with stupid people thinking they were worth their weight in gold just because they were discontinued, so I lost interest.

Besides, in the long term, I realized that they're honestly pretty darn heavy in spite of their small size, making them less desirable for Concealed Carry, so I was just plain happier carrying a cheap, easily replaceable, comparatively lightweight firearm like my Ruger LCP or S&W SW40VE than I would be carrying an expensive, hard to replace, heavy firearm like the SIG P239.

I still like the SIG P239, but not enough to prioritize hunting one down or paying a significant amount of money for one, especially since the original motivation to get one for Concealed Carry is no longer a factor.

The P239 is one of the few pistols that I like from Sig. The P226 and P229 never fit me right. Beretta and S&W blew them out of the water. But the P239 did and does things right. It is almost good enough to rival my 4040PD. The one gun that Sig makes that honestly is good as a duty gun is the Sig Pro Series. I have a SP2022 in .40 S&W (same chambering as my P239) and it honestly beats the socks off a P229.

But the P239 is a mighty fine gun of a bygone era. Single stack metal framed guns that are the same size as a G19 just don't cut it anymore in today's market. Guns like the P239, 3913, 4040PD, etc are relics. I damn love 'em, but the G43, Sig 365, Shield, etc beat 'em.

Mine is German made.

Correct, just use 40 or 357 magazines. The 9mm magazines are slightly smaller and may not stay locked in a 40/357 frame.

I have owned two p239s over the years. I started with a 40 and traded it for something I thought I wanted more. I regretted it. I picked up a 9mm version a few years ago from a friend and actually owned it twice. I don’t think either one ever failed with the except of my big hands interfering with the slide stop.

Pretty much this. Not the best comparison, but I remember when my 3" 65-3 broke it's hammer nose and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. None of the parts sellers had them. S&W neither made nor stocked them anymore. The only way I could get it fixed was to take it to a gunsmith who did have a stash of them.

If I were collecting them just to have them, I'd have no problem getting one, if I had the money and opportunity. But when I rely on it for self defense, and I don't have a variety of different carry guns at my disposal, things like parts availability becomes important.

Just my opinion.

I came across a "Red Box" 9mm SAS several weeks ago for a nice price and bought it.

Added an Alessi IWB holster in case I want to carry it this winter.

Back in 2004 I bought a 9mm P239 to replace my 1987 Glock 17. I never shot the glock well, but the P239 gave me a lot of confidence when I was able to shoot groups that looked like groups and not a blast of buckshot.

I still have the 9mm but stopped carrying that caliber years ago. Recently found a P239 in .357 (with a .40 barrel) and it's now my small EDC gun. I have a crossdraw holster on order at Privateer for it too.

CDNN had the 9mm threaded barrel for $89 (and may still) so I got one of those too. I believe I can use the 9mm threaded barrel in the .357/.40 gun. Someday I'll get a can for it.

Right now I have six 9mm mags, two .40, and six or eight .357 mags.

Back in 2005 i was working part time behind the counter of a local shop. Folks would walk in and ask for the best deal in the shop and i would immediately point to a nice P239 with box and papers for 359.00. No one ever bought it, so i did. Extremely accurate and 100% reliable. I bought 3 extra mags and it lives in my biometric safe in my nightstand. A keeper for sure.

I had several p239's...both in 357 Sig and 40....my wife even carried a 357 version as her CCW for a while.

I let the p239's go for a p220 Compact SAS in 45 ACP....I don't miss the 239 at all.

-220cor-45-sas2b-large-jpg

And to be totally fair, I sold almost all of my Sigs. I just have the p220 and a p238 remaining. I was a hard core Sig man from about 1996 until 2012 or so. I carried a p229 in 357 Sig through the academy and had a p226 set up the same way, but found the p229 easier to deal with in the car.

Mark, I tried swapping them, but the .357 and .40’s are too wide for the magwell.

I’ve acquired several holsters for the P239 now. Each one I bought came with at least two, and I’ve bought a couple myself. I even have a Bob Mika pocket holster for it and it works pretty well with the deep front pockets on some cargo pants and shorts. My favorite is a Milt Sparks VMII that was definitely worth the wait for.

I know what you mean there. Of all my semi-autos, the P239 allows me to come closest to groups that I can normally only get with a revolver. Below are some paper plate targets I shot from the 15 yard line at our local outdoor range. The bottom right is the P239.

As a old retired leo I have a soft spot for revolvers. For many years I carried a Taurus Stainless Steel snubby 38. I have a love/hate relationship with J-Frame snubbies. I love their small size and weight but shooting it accurately requires constant practice. A bigger grip helps to shoot it more accurately but the trade-off is a less concealable gun.

2016 was a game changer for me. There was a mass shooting that began in a town that I was a Police Officer in for several years. As a result of this incident I upped my edc to a 9mm. I carried a P239 for a short period of time until I got the gear I needed to carry a Beretta 92,.

Before the shooting I had read a lot about the SIG P239 but had never handled one. Then a local Gander Mountain had a really cool promotion where factory representatives from Smith & Wesson, SIG, Springfield Armory and several other manufacturers sent up tables and would let you shoot 5 rounds from any of their guns on Gander Mountain indoor shooting range. My wife and I went and of course shot several different guns. I went to the SIG table and not seeing a P239 asked the rep if he had a P239. He said yes but didn’t make a move to show me one. I then asked if I could see it and he reached under the table and brought out a brand new unfired P239 but didn’t offer to let m shoot it. I again asked if I could shoot and he replied yes so to the range I went.

I fell in love with this gun. I shot it very well and it functioned fine right out of the box. I then started a search for a used one and found a SIG certified gunsmith in California that had police trade-ins on hand. He reconditioned SIGs and Glocks and then sold them. I called him, had a ready pleasant conversation where we hit it off and he sold me the best one he had on hand. It came with night sights. I got a high ride holster and carried it until I switched to the Beretta.

Earlier this week I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease so the P239 is coming out of the safe, I have previously installed their Short Reset Trigger in it. The night sights are about 12 years old so I will be getting them replaced with new ones.

My biggest complaint about SIG in general is the price of the magazines. I must have some karma about carrying the P239 again. Earlier this year I found a good deal on five like new magazines and last week found a Galco IWB holster.

So life has come a full circle with the P239. I need to make a trip to the range to test the new magazines and get reacquainted with the SRT. After the new holster arrives my Beretta 92 is going into semi-retirement serving as a home defense gun.

My apologies. I was not thinking 9MM frame

I know that the 357 mags do not fit in the 9MM frame.

I meant to suggest using the 357 mags in a 357 frames with a Factory OEM 9MM threaded barrel

On the P239 a conversion barrel is not necessary as the barrel hoods are all the dimensions across the three chamberings

Picked up a redbox P239 in 40S&W just before the pandemic hit. Love the guns, I had another and sold it stupidly, so when I saw another at a good price I jumped on it. A have to disagree with a few posts though. One, the P365 didn't replace the P239, one had nothing to do with the other. And as far as parts and mags being readily available, I'd like to know where. I've been hunting for a 357 barrel since I bought the gun and they are absolutely unavailable. I've seen two on Ebay that have gone for over $300 and that is it. Nobody has them available, including Sig. Also magazines are far from commonly available, and when they do arise they are going for $50+ on websites to sometimes close to $100 a mag on ebay. And people are paying it. I love Sig but nobody drops models and completely stops supporting them with parts faster than they do...

40 S&W magazines are available directly from SIG.

They are on the website at an MSRP of $49.99. . . .Currently on sale for $39.99

Unfortunately I’d have to agree with you there. I think the market now demands more of a belt fed approach, more capacity, more ammo! Sig has been very successful with their 365, a very compact but higher capacity handgun. I guess, what is there not to like.

I too am a huge fan of the 239, and carry one in 357 sig. When I bought mine in 2005 it was in 40 S&W, so I threw in a 357 sig. barrel. I sat down at a bench loaded it up with Speer/CCI TMJ 125 grain ammunition and proceeded to shoot a five shot group from the bench. I walked down to the target and almost fell over. Four shots went into one ragged hole and a fifth just out with the total group size being under 1 inch being shot at 25 yards! These pistols shoot like laser beams! Absolutely incredible! I will have to dig up the photo and post it. I also believe Mossad Ayoob wrote praises about the Sig 239’s accuracy in his Sig Sauer book. I think it is the stiff thick short barrel design along with the inherit accuracy of the 357 sig. cartridge that makes them so accurate.

The eight round magazines in 357 sig. were made for the Federal Air Marshal Service. I have a few of these magazines, and I have had no problems with them feeding reliably. However I’ve heard others having reliability issues with them. With that said, I carry seven rounders.

I would like a 239 in 9mm. The high prices of the magazines or result of supply and demand unfortunately. But if a 239 in 9 mm comes my way, I’m not gonna pass it up. I enjoy the good design of this robust firearm. It’s too bad Sig discontinued this gun as it was a hot seller during the 94 Crime Bill high capacity ban. Times change, the market demand dives and Sig dumps it like a hot potato.

I understand about the hard to find and expensive magazines. When I got my P239 I searched the internet high and low for a couple of spare mags with no luck at all. Just on a hunch, I called a well stocked LGS and sho nuff! They had 'em and at a reasonable price. I bought three.
Never hurts to check local.

I picked up my P239 in .357 last spring and immediately sent it off to Sig for the complete going-over. They replaced the night sights and all the springs, and even replaced a bent guide rod.

So yes, they do still support them. Seems strange to discuss Sig support on a S&W forum when S&W is not supporting most (or all) of their metal autos.

Midwest Gunworks has .40 mags for $29 right now, and they seem to get stock in for others from time to time as well.

Watch ebay every day, sort by recently listed to float the new postings to the top.

Absolutely fine weapon, no question about it. That said, lots of options these days in the same size category with at least 50% more capacity. If only they'd made it in 45.

See my reply above. I got my 357 barrel from BarSto 2 years ago. Not sure if they still make them.

Have a P239 in shorty fourty and for practice it likes WWB 165grain FMJ's. For social purposes I use the Federal 180 grain Hydroshocks. Funny thing. When I bought my P6 in 9mm I also bought a bunch of the AKAH brand magazine carriers and a few extra magazines. Those same mag carriers will fit the P239 mags in 40 cal. Then reasoning would suggest that the 357 sig and 9mm should fit as well. Frank

CDNN still has a boat load of 9mm barrels. Seems like you could
get a barrel and have it rechambered for .357 Sig for a lot less
than $300.
