I have two Ruger No.1 rifles. A 22" barrel 7x57 with sights. And a 26" barrel 218 Bee with sights. Winchester factory ammo shot 3" at 50 yards! My handloads 50 grain poly tipped Combined Technologies bullet Rem 6 1/2 primer, and Lyman's accuracy load of IMR or H 4227, shot 1/2" Offhand group at 100 yards.

The 7x57 is sighted in for Norma 154 grain semi-spitzer factory ammo. Shoots 4" higher at 100 than Remington , has more recoil also and groups 1.5" at 100 offhand! (Remington groups about 6" of a bench!)

A classy rifle chambered in a great round.

The #1 is about the only gun from Ruger that intrigues me, especially the models with open sights and Alexander Henry forends, i.e., 1A, 1S and 1H. I have #1s in:

416 Rigby
375 H&H (2)
450-400
45-70 (2)
9.3x74R
35 Whelen
6.5x55
30-30

Very unusual, but yes! 1" @ 100 yards offhand. The most common reason No 1's don't shoot well is, some idiot messed with the forend retaining screw! The number two reason, is people don't know hot to shoot anything that isn't an AR! The number 3 reason, is for some reason the No 1 & No 3 rifles in 22 Hornet were very ammo sensitive! (probably the rifling) but around 1995 that seemed to get taken care of.

I once had an idiot start to change the screw on my 218, without asking or permission. I got him to stop before he actually picked up the rifle, the club in my hand convinced him he was in error!

The shop I bought mine from had six of them, they were all great shooters with handloads, and lousy with Winchester factory ammo!

Ivan
