Default 22's enough???

According to the penetration test at the beginning, a Ruger 22 pistol ( or any other,22 for that matter) would make a pretty good home intruder gun.

.22 short vs. .22 long rifle and pellet gun. - YouTube
Any thing is better than nothing! As for me if circumstances force me that is what I will use, but hopeful something with larger diameter ammo is available.

A knife or even a ball bat is more lethal.

I would opt for something a bit larger. However, I have a PMR 30 (.22 Mag.) that I would not feel unarmed with if needed.

Thumbs up

Like I am going to get out my 1948 Rem #121 for HD/SD...!

Keep on dreamin'... While I own such a weapon, surely you (or anyone else) would (or should) depend on it for HD/SD...!

Come on! Be Real! Sure, what you argue/wager/sell/promote is all "POSSIBLE", WHILE it is not at all likely to be "likely" to be the response expected.

I really like the original poster's approach and posting. Very well done. That said, ballistics do tell a different story. And NO, I do not wish to delve into minutia involving one's position/opinion, I actually do believe that smaller DO have a valuable input on our ability to preserve our rights/freedoms.

These smaller calibers, lacking ALL other options,... MAY work/serve as needed. Wish I could say more...

Caj, I'm not sure it would make a "pretty good home intruder gun." I mean, if that's all you've got, fine. Yeah, it can be used as a home intruder gun, but a pretty good one???

I agree that many people underestimate the .22. I'm reminded of an article years ago in one of the outdoor magazines...Field & Stream, I think, on the venerable .30-30 cartridge, stating that the .30-30 has killed more deer than any other caliber. The following month in the "Letters to the Editor" column, someone wrote back contesting the statement. The letter read, "The .30-30 hasn't killed more deer than any other cartridge. The .22 has!" The editor agreed, then added, "We meant legally."

I don't think there will be many people volunteering to be shot with any caliber. once you start leaking blood you will probably sooner or later end up in the hospital

I'm pretty good with a .22 semi-auto rifle - I'd expect I could get five or six 40gr .22LR's into a home intruder before he's even aware he's in deep trouble. Then come another five or six. I wouldn't want to be him. And he wouldn't want to be him either.

Most deer poachers use .22 rifles. Not much noise to attract attention, and effective as a .30-'06 with a head or spine shot at moderate distances. My father was somewhat of a deer poacher back in the 1930s, always used a .22 single shot.

I’m going to give my 9422 Magnum to my daughter and son in law for a house gun. She is very proficient with a lever action, but she ain’t getting my Rossi 92 in .45 Colt. I figure a few .22 mags to the chest would ruin an intruder’s day.

In my experience as a street cop, a high percentage of the shootings I made a 22 LR was involved. Some of the nastiest wounds were inflicted by the lowly 22. An ER doc told me the 22 would go in and fragment, making it a difficult wound to treat. Me, I don’t even want to get shot with a BB gun. I have an aversion to pain, espccially when I’m the one in pain. Be safe and be blessed.

I spent most of my career working violent crime on Indian Reservations, where the .22 rifle is king. Marlin Models 60s usually, unless you were well-to-do and had a Ruger 10/22.

I was at a conference of some kind with a bunch of other rez agents, and the subject of murder guns came up. I realized I had never worked a shooting with a .22 repeating rifle that wasn’t fatal. A couple of the other guys had, but the overwhelming majority of theirs were fatalities, too.

We worked ALL rez shootings, not just the fatalities, so it wasn’t a matter of only going to the ones that proved the point.

The closest I had was a drive-by shooting of a bar where a .22 round came through the window and hit a shot glass a guy was raising to his mouth. His lip was cut by the glass, but the bullet missed him so it doesn’t count.

A fast-firing .22 rifle will eat your lunch fast.

I have told this story here before. I worked part time as a teen in a
custom butcher shop. The guy doing the killing, skinning and gutting
of animals, cattle, hogs, occasional sheep or goat, always used a pump
.22 rifle. In 3 years I never saw him use more than one shot, they dropped ln their tracks.
Also rumored that the night deer hunters used .22 or .22 mags along with
their spot light, in this area.
And to top it off the .22 was a favorite of the mob for years. All close range head shots.
I carried a .22 mag in a boot holster as a back up gun and never felt it
would not do the job if needed.
As many have said on this forum, shot placement is king.

The Ellifritz study also shows a high number of .22s stopping attacks.

Not counting people cranked up on dope a 22 will discourage bad guys from finishing what they are doing. Like shooting deer hit in kill zone, he is going down. Hit in muscle will bring tears to your eyes, and you will wish you were somewhere else.

As a kid out in the Country, All the hogs and calves that I saw shot were shot with a 22 Rifle.
Of course the rifle was carefully positioned almost touching a stationary animal.

Things I have heard regarding the lethality of .22 LR round:

A. A shot to the skull is deadly because it penetrates the skull then ricochets around inside the skull.

B. A two liter pop bottle over the muzzle of a .22 LR is favored by hit men because it acts as a suppressor and is lethal as skull shots.

I can't ascertain whether A or B is accurate; I have never been on the giving or receiving end.

Many years ago I worked in a hospital emergency room. An elderly woman who had murdered her elderly husband by stabbing him while he slept was brought in. She had remorse and shot herself in the head numerous times with a .22 revolver. The revolver was very old as were the .22 short rounds it held. Four rounds were fired, two rounds were between the skin and skull and the other two had created small wounds not penetrating the skin. The two rounds were removed with forceps and given to the police, she was bandaged up and off to jail.

I do believe that if I was breaking into a house and suddenly a dozen or more .22s started in my direction, I don't think I'd be sticking around to see where they came from.

You must be a mighty poor shot if you think a knife or ball bat is more lethal. Most .22's hold 10 rounds, that is enough to screw up anyone's day, if you can hit them.

Nobody likes to be shot.

Some people will give up just at the thought that they might be shot.

Some people will give up after being shot just about anywhere and with anything.

Some people will give up after being shot several times with just about anything.

However,

Some people won't give up, even after being shot several times with just about anything.

Problem is, you don't know which of these will show up as your attacker. Better to shoot them with something powerful, and in a place that will make a difference.

The ones that don't give it up after being shot are usually high on drugs. The best for these is a head shot or a hip shot. Either disconnect the brain housing group or take away mobility. Joint shots are more effective with heavy caliber guns.

Would not be my first choice, but several .22's to the head are nothing to mess with.

Not from ten feet. More people die each year from .22 caliber wounds than any other caliber. Or at least it’s close . . .

Beats fists, feet and foul language. If you are going to rely on it, try to channel Charlie Askins or Jeff Cooper if you have to use it.

In my experience, meth heads are notoriously intolerant of gunfire of any caliber . . .

How does the .22 compare to sharp or blunt objects, statistically?

There are shooting drills you can do that will give you an idea what it may be like.

I think a tube fed .22 auto rifle would be a good home gun for a person that doesn't have much experience. It's easier to make accurate shots with a rifle than with a pistol. Fifteen .22s are going to be difficult to walk into, no recoil, the noise is not too bad and when the rifle is empty it's a better club that a pistol. Larry

It wins, every time. I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you . . .

If I recall correctly,I think Massad Ayoob(maybe wrong spelling, sorry!) once reported about 2 bad guys being cornered by a police officer and one saying to the otherfffff!this is just a puny .38Spl.And the officer to reply:''you want to try it?''which ended the conversation.
I guess the same could be said with the .22.Nobody wants to be hit by a bullet;.22 or any other!

A few years ago my cousin was the victim of a home invasion. The invader was mentally disturbed and kicked my cousins front door in in the middle of the night. The invader seriously injured my cousin before my cousin got loose and retrieved his 22 pistol from his night stand. One shot to the invaders head stopped the problem and the invader was removed in a body bag.

22 might not be the #1 choice but it will do in an emergency.

Let’s not forget a .22 semi-auto that actually was a service pistol.

The British Army’s L66A1. In the mid ‘70’s the British Government procured 3000 Walther .22 cal PP’s for the Ulster Defense Regiment that was then trying to control Northern Ireland. They were described as PDW’s, (Personal Defense Weapons.)

Nefarious stories abound and some actually could be true. Regardless they are still kinda historically cool to have.

Also wasn’t there a Hi-Standard .22 with a silencer used in Vietnam?

Jim

a 22 shot through the eyeball socket is sure to be "lights out" for any perp. Any perp that laughs at my pointing a mousey 22 directly at their head will soon find out who has the last laugh.

Yes, the PA poachers use .22s for their night hunting, then pick them up and throw 'em in the back of a truck. Real good sports! But at home I would have no problem shooting zits off some scum's face if I'd have to. Don't wanna, but I have no qualms about a .22

Thus, the origin of the Tee shirt that says " How many times do I have to shoot you with my .22 before you get outta my space?!"

Every time I see one of these threads I’m reminded of the guy who fired 6 shots from a $20 pot metal .22 revolver in about 2 seconds, knocking 3 people flat on the spot and very nearly killing the 4th. We all saw it. Guy’s name was John Hinckley, I believe. I don’t never poo-poo the .22!
