The 22 takes a beating because in today’s world a lot of people that end up in shooting sports, hunting or SD/HD never had one. In rural areas you are a oddball if you don’t have a 22 and a shotgun. I killed hogs and steers with 22 at point blank range and never thought much about it. Everyone did that. I had a ornery Charlay/ Angus steer. It would crash through fences, not even Cow Puncher would phase it. After chasing it down and dragging it home for several months it got in pasture with neighbors beef.
He told me not to worry about it. I told him when I killed it he would get a share. You couldn’t get closer than about 20yds to it and it would be off.
I ended up shooting it with 22 and it killed it in its tracks. I have seen hogs shot point blank that didn’t go down. I think a lot of that was the box of 22 ammo in the “shed” was from 1948. I also hear stories of double skulled hogs caused by the vitamin additives.

Well, a .22 well placed will kill a pig, cow, and almost certainly a man. In theory, at least, it would do as a home defense weapon. However, few people are cool enough when a man kicks in their door to carefully put rounds into a moving target the size of a softball...that being the size, more or less, of a human brain. Also, a home invader isn't an ordinary burglar to be dissuaded from continuing his crime, he's perhaps motivated by drugs and and more resistant to pain, so reliably, a head shot is called for. The crime of Home Invasion is way more serious and the penalties are way greater than simple burglary.

As to other issues, .22 bullet doesn't ricochet around the skull, at least not on pigs. Not enough energy. Also, a plastic soft drink bottle doesn't work as a suppressor, as it's blown off at the first shot and the sound of the bullet hitting the bottom of the bottle is very loud...I've tried it. I guess you could affix it with a hose clamp and fill it with some sound absorbing material and it might work better.

The LR is a fine round, and as has been said, better than harsh language. But for me, I'm choosing something stronger for home defense.

This is a real interesting thread, enjoyed looking at it...I keep a .38 as my nightstand gun, that said, it seems to me that if safety of keeping a loaded weapon in the house were no issue, in the heat of it all, i.e. darkness running ,yelling ect,,that a 12ga. loaded with 00 buck would be the real deal! heck, the blast would blind everybody! never been in a gunfight,,never want to! some LEO's here likely know

I would rather have more gun, but, I could make due with a 22 if I had to.

If I was going into a weight critical long time survival experience. I would chose a 22 every time. Much as I like my S&W revolvers it would probably be a skinny barreled Ruger pistol with a couple magazines. That and a bunch of aircraft cable, some nylon line and hooks and I would be eating good.

A .22 in the hands of someone physically compromised who has practiced with it is a much better defensive weapon then the larger caliber weapon they are unwilling to practice with.
