Non Assault Rifle AK
Not a S&W, but you guys know so much more than the other forums and that's why I'm here every day...
So I would not have to register my "assault rifles" I modded them to be compliant. The AR was easy - bought a kit to make the mag fixed. The only evil feature on my AK was the pistol grip, so I removed it and plugged the bolt hole.
After several years, I just got around to shooting the AK. AWFUL.
I saw ads for a compliant "handle", for lack of a better term, but can't find where they are sold.
Anyone have an idea for a part or a mod?

You have to use all the holes, otherwise it’s just not worth the trouble

Here are a couple featureless AK grips that will meet the requirement.

Despite the pronouncements by many politicians that they are everywhere, I've yet to see a proper assault rifle except when visiting Nellis on an open day and the local machine gun rental place.

There are still those states that still use parts definitions to fit the state's legal definition of an assault rifle:
California:
Quote:
The definition of an assault weapon in California for rifles is a semi-automatic centerfire rifle having a detachable magazine and also one or more of the following features: Forward vertical grip – a grip that protrudes from the front portion of the gun downward for an easy grip Flash suppressor – minimizes the gun flash
|
(c) Michael McNeely, Attorney at Law
The same Mr. McNeely elaborates:
Quote:
The definition of an assault weapon in California for rifles is a semi-automatic centerfire rifle having a detachable magazine and also one or more of the following features:
Forward vertical grip – a grip that protrudes from the front portion of the gun downward for an easy grip
Flash suppressor – minimizes the gun flash
Adjustable telescoping stock
Pistol grip – protrudes below the firearm’s trigger
If you own one of these assault weapons prior to the new law’s implementation, you are permitted to keep it. Originally the requirement was to have your weapon registered by the end of 2017, but the deadline has now been extended to the middle of 2018.
Alternatively, you may make your weapon compliant (such that it falls outside of the definition of an assault weapon) by changing it into a fixed magazine, which means it no longer has a detachable magazine. Or, you can make it a featureless rifle, which is a compliant semi-automatic rifle without any of the features mentioned above that define it as an assault weapon.
All weapons that are not made compliant must be registered with the DOJ. The registration process must be initiated at Bureau of Firearms | State of California - Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General.
|
So, the OP either lives in CA or a state using similar guidelines to define assault rifles, notwithstanding the fact that "ugly rifle" does not equal "assault rifle" except and unless the rifle can be fired in full auto mode.
Sadly, the OP is smart on the subject and totally correct - he can modify the rifle to become outside the absurd definition. The statute allows for that.
Good for you, GypsmJim! Well done.

We're all glad that others feel the same way. It helps keep the traffic down...LOL.
Nearing retirement we looked far and wide to find a place with no gun restrictions. Also, we would have had to at least come close to the quality of our home, as well as our simply awesome mountain hunting / camping retreat.
The best we could find was disappointing. All the women had no front teeth and the real estate cost double, and that was for a double-wide.
In the end, putting a thimagiggie on my AK seemed better than leaving our home and family.
