Started with M1 almost 60 years ago, then issued 1918A2 BAR, then M14 until early 1965 when my unit was alerted to go to Vietnam and we were issued M16A1.
Police duty in 1970 had to buy my own .38 Spl. or .357, carried first a used S&W model 10 (made in 1967) which I still have. Dept. authorized DA .45 autos about 1986, but I carried a S&W .45 acp 1917 revolver (old Brazilian model) until retired in 1990. Then worked for the US Marshal as CSO and was issued another model 10. We were told that our model 10 revolvers were from the FBI when they went to semi-autos.

I started my law enforcement career in 1980 and was issued a Smith & Wesson Model 10 heavy barrel. Not long thereafter I was issued a Smith & Wesson Model 65. Sometime around 1986 we transitioned to the Smith & Wesson Model 5906.

I think it was in 1990 that we were issued the Beretta Model 96. When I retired in 2008 the department was in the process of transitioning to the Glock 22.

Military:
M14, M16A1; M60, M16A2; M4A1, M24; 1911A1, M9

Police:
Model 15, Colt Border Patrol, Model 58, Model 65

Liked most of 'em except the Model 15 which was pretty beat up. Got rid of it as soon as I could. I never really bonded with the M9 either and actually had it break on me while on a deployment.

The Model 58 and 65 were personal purchases, but I carried them for several years in lieu of the Model 15.

Brand new XM-16E1 at Fort Jackson. C-9-2, October 1968. Unlike everyone else at the time who was still training on the M14. They said our company was test. After AIT at Fort Knox, it was an M1911 and the occasional M3A1 grease gun off and on for the next twenty plus years.

Along the way an interesting array of small arms, both individual and crew served, from a few different armies and eras, passed through my hands. Some I liked, some I didn't. However, as a tank commander, the Browning Caliber .50 M2 and Browning Caliber .30 M37 were my favorite machine guns.

I tolerated the M85, a maintenance intensive and somewhat finicky machine gun. There are no words to describe how positively vile the M73/M219 series machine guns were. The bean counter civilians that condemned a generation of tank crewman to the agonies of that awful gun should be relegated to the deepest pits of hell.

Directly answering the question, about three years in I was issued a Model 66 4" which I carried for only a couple of years. I went back to carrying personally owned firearms til the end, excepting an issued Glock 22 that I had to carry when performing Honor Guard duties. Naturally, we had to be uniform in appearance.

(Aside from answering the question of the thread, during the first 10 years I carried a 6" Python, the model 66, a 6" model 629 and a Beretta 92FB. Quite a menagerie! I finally discovered the Colt Government which I carried my remaining 30 years.)

My drill rifle as a Marine Corps midshipman was a Remington '03A3. IIRC, it had a 7-43 barrel stamping.

My first stop as a LEO was a small sheriff's office, where each deputy furnished his own sidearm. I carried a 1911 clone, a S&W 1917 and a M27 converted to .44 Special. Next, I worked as a correctional officer. No weapons were carried inside, of course, but when I worked the towers, there was a smorgasbord of guns. There were M10s, a double barrel Savage 12 gauge, an M1 carbine, a Remington 760 .30-06, a Remington pump 12 gauge and probably another odd weapon or two that I can't remember.

When I started with my PD, it was privately owned sidearms. I carried several big bore revolvers in .44 Special, ,45 Colt, .44 Magnum, .41 Magnum and .45 ACP. Mostly, I carried a full sized 1911 that I built on a aluminum frame. Around the 1990s, we had several officers that were hired that couldn't afford to buy a handgun and the city dipped into the closet of abandoned and confiscated firearms and issued out a revolver or semiauto. Then the decision was made to make these guns available to all of the officers. Over the years, I had a variety of sidearms. I had a Charter Arms .44 Special Bulldog, a Colt PPS, a Colt 1917, a S&W 1917 and a nickel Colt Cobra .38 special. I tried to buy the Cobra and the Colt 1917 when I retired, but no go.

After retirement, I went to Kosovo for two years. My issue handgun was a Beretta M9 9mm. Then I went to Afghanistan for three years where I received another M9 and eventually a Bushmaster M4 with the 3 shot burst feature.

Coming home, I worked private security in a Federal office building, where the issue pistol was a Glock M17 in 9mm. After 7 plus years, I retired for good and now I don't need no stinkin' issued guns.

Only had two jobs where I was issued a weapon. Late 70's, worked for NC DOC. On tower duty, we were issued Remington 870's with a 6 round magazine and 20" barrel. Sidearm issue for inmate escort was initially a Model 10 heavy 4" barrel. About a year after I started with DOC, they upgraded to the Model 65, 4" barrel. I worked outside patrol on night shift for a couple of years, I was issued both.

I was a Flight Nurse in the USAFR for 8 years. As medical aircrew, we were technically noncombatants and normally weren't issued weapons unless we flew into a combat area. During Desert Storm, we were issued the Model 12, M&P Airweight, with a 2 inch barrel. It was intended solely as a defensive weapon should we be shot down or otherwise forced to land in enemy territory. We carried them in shoulder holsters inside our flight suits and were told not to mention we were armed to anyone, although the aircraft commander knew about it.

I was issued a radar in the Navy. They did let me shoot M14's and 1911's with our Marine detachment off the fantail of the USS Springfield CLG7. That was fun. They threw one gallon glass jugs off the bow of the ship and we shot at them as the ship passed by.

When I started in LE in 1969 we had to provide our own duty weapons. Anything 9 mm or larger was OK as long as it wasn't a piece of junk. I started with a pencil barrel model 10 with 158 grain LRN 38 special. As I learned more about handguns I bought a model 19 and then a model 58. In the mid 70's we were issued model 66's. Most of them locked up at familiarization and we sent them all back to S&W. I don't remember what was wrong with them but they worked fine when we got them back. We carried those for a few years and then were issued 686's. Same thing happened but by then we had a S&W trained armorer and he fixed them without having to send them back. They even sent him a "M" stamp to show they had been modified. I retired from that PD and went to work for a small SO where we once again had to furnish our own. I bought a seven shot 686 for that job and then went to a larger SO where we again had to furnish our own. Back to the 58. That SO eventually issued Glock 22's. The range officer insisted on Glock 17's and most of the deputies protested, wanting the 40 cal. Glock 22. The sheriff said to test the 17 and 22 with all the deputies and see which one they shot the best. Most of the deputies purposely shot off target with the G17 and on target with the G22 and we got Glock 22's. Mine got messed up with some bad ammo and they sent it back for repair. They didn't have a spare and the range officer told me to carry what I wanted until it came back so I went back to the S&W model 58 until my Glock came back. I got the G22 back in about six weeks. All but one of the deputies had never seen a .41 magnum, much less a 58. I carried the G22 for several more years until I retired seven years ago. They couldn't legally give me the G22 when I retired but they could sell it to me for a dollar. It is now a family heirloom, as well as some of my other former carry guns, and is engraved on the slide with my name, department, badge and number. I took it hunting a couple of times and have killed two deer with it. That left me impressed with the .40 Winchester Ranger round.

In 1979, My department went with model 59s for the issue weapon but they were so unreliable during the transition the sheriff told S&W he wanted the county’s money back. S&W offered to trade model 66s. They also had issues but less than the model 59s. Quality control for S&W in the late 1970s was poor.

In my USAF days (‘99-‘07), almost everything I qualified/issued with was a museum artifact. Colt Armalite AR-15 601, GAU-5A, GUU-5P Frankengun, and M-16A2.

Only gun I’ve been issued was the M16A-2, courtesy of the USMC.

Both agencies I’ve worked for with the county required we provide our own firearms. That’s always been fine by me since I prefer carrying my own gun. The first agency did switch to an issue gun shortly after I transferred out, they went with the Glock 23. When that agency was dissolved we were offered the orphaned Glocks but declined them. We were happy with our personally owned guns, and the other outfit was such a mismanaged disaster we feared the guns might be cursed.

Don't know if this counts since it's private security and not military or LE.

Back in the 90s I worked for two companies as an armed guard. The first company didn't really issue us guns, but they were kept at the client's site. At shift change, the leaving guard would unload his gun and hand it over to the arriving guard, who would then load and holster the gun. It was a 4" 686 loaded with .38 Special 158gr LRN. Nobody ever fired the guns, and they were poorly maintained (stainless steel guns with visible rust is not a good sign...cylinders wouldn't even spin), so we didn't know if the guns even worked.

Second company was better. We were issued individual guns, 4" Model 10s, that we could take home. I was able to take mine to the range and practice with it. I was also able to maintain it properly. Even used it for my license requalifications. It came with magna grips, which I didn't like, so I bought a set of Uncle Mike's finger-grooved grips (3-finger, not the boot grip). The covered backstrap made trigger reach a bit of a stretch, but it was manageable. The issued ammo was either 158gr LRN or SWC, but I was able to get management approval to carry Winchester FBI loads. When that account got canceled I had to turn in my gun as the company was getting rid of all their armed contracts. In 20/20 hindsight, I should've asked about possibly purchasing it as it was quite a good gun.

In uniform, I was first issued a standard 4 inch barrel M10. When newer guns came in I traded that for a heavy 4 inch barrel M10. At times I carried a Personally owned 4 inch 19-3 unless I was told we were having a weapons inspection by my motor Sergeant. We ultimately were issued M59’s.

In plain clothes while undercover I carried a M36. At different times I carried a nickel M29, a Python, a Combat Commander, and a blue or nickel 2.5 inch 19-3’s. All privately owned. Or the 59 in a Jackass Leather Co. shoulder holster.

Finally, I had access to a M76 machine gun. That was a fun one.

I was USAF Security Police 1980 to 1986
In basic we qualed with the .22 kits. I remember the buffer "bing" sound was louder than the muzzle.
In SP school all the live fire was 5.56 which also revealed the "remedial" shooters, (not me)
There were no assigned weapons, you carried an M-16 from the rack that may have been with another SP earlier.
Later there were some units that tried to serial issue the same rifle to you regularly.
There were no M16A1's issued and I remember carrying a VERY low serial Armalite three prong in North Dakota.
Model 15's were the only handguns I carried in the Air Force.
I was also qualified on M203 and did the M60 Specialist course.
Sidenote: When you have thirty guys on the line with fifteen crews shooting, you get to see some interesting failures of M60 parts. My bolt broke in half right across the center connection to the operating rod. Bad casting.

My first sidearm as a Fed was a 2.5" Model 19 probably -3 that I was issued at the academy and carried throughout and into my duty station.
We transitioned to Sig P220 which I carried for all but the last year of my 24.5 there. We were issued new P220's about ten years after because the agency deemed the first issues "shot out". (We trained a lot)
The last was the S&W M&P in .45 which shot fine and has more capacity, but I would have kept the 220 if I could have since it was an excellent shooter and it seemed a waste to me to issue me a new gun just to turn it in after a year.
We used m16's over the years staying up with milspec through the A1, A2 and into M4's with all the rail goodies.
In the last half of my time, some of us were qualified as designated marksmen with 7.62 rifles. The program tried different rifles depending on budget.
My favorite was an M14. An agency firearms guy found us a lot of M14's in storage at a Navy location. They turned out to be National Match grade and shot excellent. We also had lots of guys on the team that were CMP enthusiasts. Those guys were sent to inspect and choose the rifles that we would bring to our location. They were equipped by our staff with the GOOD scope mount and a Leupold mildot scope.

My first duty assignment I flew the mighty UH-1H! Then went to the fixed wing course and OV-1 transition. Had orders for Germany that were rescinded while I was in the Mohawk course, new RFO for Korea. Went from Mohawks straight to the RC-12 transition then on to Korea. So while I was Mohawk qualified I never flew it operationally, so I don’t really consider myself a Mohawk driver.

I had U.S M2 Carbines when on Security details, and an S&W Model 15 when I worked Town Patrol in Angeles City, PI.
When I was sent to Bien Hoa AB, VN I was issued the new to us AR15, with triangular handguard, 3 prong flash hider, Olive Drab stock, and of course full auto capability.

When I came back Stateside to Webb AFB, TX. we had M16's for Security and S&W Model 15's for Law Enforcement.

When I hired on at the Elyria, OH PD, I was issued a new S&W heavy barrel, 4 inch Model 10. Then I was issued an S&W Model 66, 4 inch for Uniform and 2 1/2" for plain clothes.

Also each Officer was issued a Remington 870 12 gauge.

Finally I was issued a Sig P226, which I was given upon retirement.

I was a nuclear weapons specialist in the USAF, so I guess, a MK-12A Reentry System for the Minuteman III missile...

When we had igloos open or were convoying we were issued an M-16A1 or sometimes if we were driving, we were issued either a S&W Model 15 or a Model 10.

When I was in the Air National Guard I was issued an M-16A2....every once in awhile I would be issued a S&W Model 15 we kept in the safe with the classified material.

Someone mentioned the USAF's Franken-gun, the GAU-5A...here's a link to a neat website on the history of our rather unique rifle.

74-77 Army MP 1911 and 1897 Winchester 12 ga.
78-2000 municipal Dept. Initially allowed personal revolver anything as long as it chambered issued .38+p 125gr sjhp so I swapped out between Personal M65, 6 inch 66 and a 4 inch colt guard Python (oh my wish I still had)
Around 83/84 issued M65 with .357 loads (Remington 125 gr. jHP)
Had those 5 years then Sig 226 9mm(loads varied over the years) till retirement. Allowed to buy our 65s for $100. Still have that one.
Dept still carries 226 now in 3rd generation .40 rail with night sights. Active officers were allowed to buy 1st and 2nd generation Sig’s for like $400 but retirees excluded.

In the post-Vietnam Army (MP) I was issued a M1911A1 pistol, M16A1 rifle, and M60 machine gun.

In civilian (State) LE, I was issued a S&W Model 28-2 (6”) and a Winchester Model 12 Riot Gun. The 28-2 was replaced with a Beretta 92F and later an H&K USP40 and the Winchester was replaced with a Remington 870P. After I was promoted I was also issued Colt AR15’s of various configurations.

I also carried personally owned S&W 36, 649, & 940 backup weapons.

After I retired I went to work as a city policeman in a small town and was allowed to carry my own weaponry so I carried personally owned 1911’s, AR15’s, and autoloading riot guns.

Just LE service, a single department, so somewhat boring.
Thanks to all our real servicemen that served - thank you greatly!

Started in 1980 in LE on my Capitol City PD. At the time they were an old Colt holdover. Uniforms had a mix of Troopers and Trooper MKIII's. Detectives a mix of Cobras and Detective Specials.
A Major who did nothing but push paper actually carried a Bauer or Browning .25 (can't recall which).
Most all the Colts were pretty worn.
To save money, the department Armorer had even set up bluing tanks to reblue very finish-worn revolvers. Cheaper than sending back to Colt.

My Trooper MKIII was very worn, and I was single, shooting any time I was off. IIRC, I went through about 3 of them in short order. The last one lost it's frame mounted firing pin evidently just after the last shot on a shooting outing. I cleaned it - failing to detect that. Carried it that way on-duty 3 weeks until I went shooting again. 'Click'.
Darn scary.

Shotguns were a mix of High Standard, Winchester 1200's and later S&W M916's.
Those eventually all went away and the standard was the Remington M870 18". Good choice.

Soon the whole department transitioned to S&W. Uniforms M66 4", Detectives M66 2.5". Duty load remained the S&W-brand (that dates me....) .38 Spl. 125 gr +P JHP. Media was all up in arms about LE carrying scary, horrific, 'Geneva Convention violating Magnum HP bullets'. Ridiculous.

10+ years went by, we were probably one of the last in the state to go to autos. In the meantime, my M66 got a case number electro-penciled on it where it saved my bacon, commemorating 'Reverends' Sharpton and Jackson to visit my city and call for my lynching essentially.

The new auto was the much-heralded FBI choice of the M1076. The .40 concept was yet to be born.
It gave good service, held up well. Performed well in some OIS's.

After ~10 years S&W had discontinued the M1076, but they would actually make up new batches for incoming academies at a much-increased cost. And 10mm ammo was getting quite expensive (good thing I have barrels of 10mm brass now )

Next came the M4566 for uniform, CS45 for Detectives.
Being the latter, I carried the CS45 for years. I shot it OK, usually 100's or close, but it was a tad too small for my large paws. And ugly.

Getting assigned back to the line/uniform, the CS45 looked really weird in uniform carry gear and knowing retirement was looming in the near future and I would be given my last duty piece, I turned in the CS and got a new M4566. AKA 'the boat anchor' called by the young guys.
Still have my M4566, but it gets used little. Usually, if I choose to carry something in .45 it's some form of M1911.

In the 6 months before my retiring the department was testing and evaluating new duty weapons and I got to assist some.
Final pick was the M&P .45 FS over many others.

In the 12 years I've been gone the M&P .45 has been in a number of OIS's. It, and the duty Speer 230 gr. Gold Dot JHP seem to settle matters perfectly fine.

Now - hear the young guys don't like it - they all want the newest/greatest Glock 9mm.

Just a slight aside if I may. In the RVN we had a lot of weapons NOT on the TO&E to choose from. Early on I ended up with a nice under-folder AK-47 that I carried with me in the cockpit. Someone quickly told me that it was a bad choice as a survival weapon because if I ever went down and had to defend myself and crew with it the good guys might start shooting at it's sound. I immediately acquired an M-16 through unofficial channels.

I think "unofficial" guns are just as interesting and included in this discussion.

Have to add my M2 carbine story. We had a company commander in Viet Nam that had acquired an M2 carbine. Most of the time, he stayed mounted on his ACAV, but on the odd occasion he would dismount and accompany the scout platoon. On just such an occasion near Xuan Loc, while moving through some triple canopy, contact was made. In the ensuing firefight, he fired his carbine. Since it didn't sound like an an AK-47, an M16 or an M60, he drew return fire from both sides. He did not carry it dismounted again.

US Army ‘73-‘76
Fort Ord BCT M16A1 triangle handguards and 20 round mags
Fort Gordon AIT MP School M1911A1 Ithaca
Mannheim FRG M1911A1 Remington-Rand and M16A1, also qualified with M60 and was a gunner on M2 but only got to shoot it twice a year at Grafenwoehr.

I’ve been an electric lineman for 42+ years, several times I wished I was issued something more lethal than a “shotgun stick”

Out of all the guns I've been issued. My favorite might be a shocker.... it is the GLOCK 37 in .45 GAP.

I liked that gun. Sure, the GLOCK 22 did the same job with a much higher capacity, but the .45 GAP was such a pleasant cartridge to shoot. The gun handled nicely, had a low recoil impulse, and was just as reliable as could be since it was a GLOCK.

I missed out when the GLOCK 37s were being cleared out on the police surplus market and I kick myself for letting them go cheap and not pouncing on the deal. Now that I want one, I can't find one at a good price.

Lots of great stuff here. Makes me envious. My first "issue" gun as an AF Dog Handler in 1972 was a S&W Md15. Later, TDY to Thailand, a GAU 5/A/A. At Malmstrom a S&W 15 on patrol/gate duty, an M16, no forward assist, in the Weapons Storage area. After a stint in the MANG, I went back to AF as an LE troop. Still the S&W 15. Later in Korea as a Financial Analyst turned "augmentee to the SPs" another M16. Just before I retired, they made me qualify with an M9. My Commander qualified with me that day and if I hadn't put 6 of my own rounds in his target he would've failed. But all ends well I guess. I still love S&W15s and have 5 or so in the safe. Oh and 1 civilian M9.

I initially left off the long guns I have been issued in my le career, so here goes.....

The first long gun I was issued was the timeless Remington 870 Police Magnum, all wood and steel, 18 inch barrel

Replaced by a Mossberg 590A1 14 inch barrel

Replaced by another 870 Police Magnum...Works Good, Lasts a LONG Time!

Rifles/Subguns

MP5......The Best Subgun I have ever handeled bar none.
HK G36K.....Worst Assault Rifle I have ever handeled bar none

Colt M4 (Current Issue), replaced both of the above.....Works Good, Lasts a LONG Time Too!

Me and the MP5......Man I really liked that gun.

I know Xuan Loc! Worked there for a while. It was a big area, because of the tree cover (triple canopy, I guess) it was fairly open beneath for an infantryman. 1969.

I'm guessing you guys were with the 199th In Bde. (Light). We (190th AHC) used to fly you around Xuan Loc and on up to the 2 Corps line. Verna, Libby, Mace, Dan, Rita, etc. All FSB's. Lots of arty there, but no tracks for you as I remember.

I know USMC didn't want to give up your M-14's. I was in the last BCT Co. at Polk to qual with the M-14. Just familiarized with the M-16. You can tell they are.....

Default What Guns Were You Issued?

Having spent my life as a foreign (German) national in the most neutral and peaceful country in Europe (Switzerland) I did not serve and I have no affiliation with LE.

However having read this entire thread is really interesting and like others, I wish to express my appreciation for those who put themselves on the line to protect the others.

I’ve had the pleasure of collecting and shooting some of the weapons mentioned and if I may, I post a few pics for illustration.

Can you tell us which agency used the .45 Glock? I know the Florida Highway patrol issued them and FDLE but that's about all.

Geoff
Who notes the local Sheriff's office, St. Johns County, issues .40 Glocks in 3 sizes.

The Georgia State Patrol also issued the G37 (45 GAP) in 2006. It was replaced by the Glock 17 in 2014.

Since I worked for two agencies that had approved firearms lists, I was about to say I was never issued a firearm, but then remembered that department #2 did issue a Remington 870 with folding stock. They were issued to the car, not the officer, but since the dept assigned the car, I guess they assigned to shotgun, too.

#2 also kept a limited number of 4" blued Model 19s for issue to officers who could not afford to purchase a sidearm or for temporary use while the officer's POW was being repaired.

Now that I see this has morphed into "what did you carry on duty":

4" S&W M28-2 as primary in uniform and on stakeouts
2" Colt Lawman MK III as backup in uniform and primary in investigations
2" Colt Agent as backup both assignments
High Standard .22 WRM derringer as Onion Field last ditch everywhere and as primary once or twice when I anticipated being frisked
39-2 as primary in investigations
469 (briefly) in investigations
Colt Commander .45 ACP on OCDETF assignment
Utterly unauthorized Winchester M94 Trapper .30-30 for solo surveillance on the open prairie.

My active duty and National Guard service was in the early 1960s, so my arms room guns were a 1911A1 pistol and an M1 carbine.

I carried my own pistol by preference on active duty; I had it accurized and tuned for reliability. I still have it.

On active duty, I carried my arms room issue M1 carbine; however in my National Guard days I carried my own DCM-purchased carbine, which I still have,

John
