Default Opinions on old stock Sile grips?

Looking for a replacement set of grips for a S&W revolver, but don't have the cash currently to buy genuine old stock S&W grips. I can't find a set of Herrett's for an N-Frame, my usual go to aftermarket grip, and after the last very poorly fitting set, I won't be buying Altamont grips again. The choices aside from those three aforementioned options seem to be old stock Jay Scott grips, or Sile. The Jay Scott grips people seem to have mixed feelings about, but Sile grips, which I've heard of, I can't find any opinions on, just a few sets for sale.

Thoughts?

What's the revolver wearing at the moment? Personally, I would just keep the current grips on the gun while you save up for what you really want. Don't settle. Be kind to your S & W.

Good advice.

Altamont has good service and will replace a grip that doesn't fit well.

I had a set for a j frame that I returned twice before they got it right.

At the moment, it's wearing a genuine set of S&W N-Frame Targets, probably mid 70s vintage, that someone completely obliterated by carving finger grooves and a thumb rest into the left grip panel, most likely with a Dremel tool, and then dipped both grips in some sort of urethane to seal them back up. They look awful, but feel ok, though I'm worried about how thin the wood gets in a couple spots, and don't really want to shoot the gun like that. This is not the set of grips the gun came with though, that was a very old, very worn set of Pachmayr presentation grips, with hard and misaligned seams. The aforementioned targets were something I scavenged out if the LGS junk bin for free once, figured they'd work in a pinch. I also have a set of Pachmayr grippers for an N-Frame, but they have never fit right on any gun I've tried them on. Have had great luck with the K-Frame ones, just not the N-Frame.

If they feel OK as you said.
I would use the altered wood ones for now.
Maybe make them more presentable?
Without actually seeing a picture I don't think you have to be worried about them being thin in spots.

I have a set of Sile J frame square butt thumb - rest targets converted to fit a Rossi .357. They are very nicely made from walnut. Best $38.00 I spent in a long time.

I bought a “lot” of Sile grips for S&W K & N frames. They are decent grips.
The only reason I bought them is to replace Rubbers on S&Ws. If I’m going to keep it, I will get S&W grips. If it’s trading stock the Siles are much better than rubbers. With the price of S&W grips the guns are being raped of grips and sold with rubbers. I was selling used rubber grips when I had enough to make up a lot. Now I’m burning them to get them out of circulation. I don’t want perverts that separate S&Ws from original grips to get them.

I have used the Sile stocks for many of my pre-war N frames and have been very satisfied with both fit and feel. Mine seem to be made of good quality walnut, and the checkering is accurate. I don’t know if they would fit post war N frames as well as the earlier ones.
Sile stocks have a silver stock circle the same size as the larger S&W circles. The design is an Eagle with the small letters “Sile” on the bottom. They aren’t original, of course, but from a couple feet away they are indistinguishable. I usually paid $35-$40 for mine, but have seen asking prices for them recently much higher.
Hope this helps.

Did not know Sile grips were still available. I remember the Sile display stand in our range/LGS back in the 70s. Many of the grips were garish junk, with poorly shaped bright yellow stocks. Others were only fair in shape and quality. What WERE excellent, were the finger groove rubber grips Sile imported from Italy in the 1980s. These were made for Smith J, K, Ruger -Six revolvers. Don't remember any others. They were thinner and lighter than Pachs, which had lost their allure by being mfg'd poorly outside of the U.S. They were lined with fiberglass which was lighter than Pachs steel inserts and did not attract moisture.

Yes, this is where I've been looking. Here, and Numrich are my goto places for grips, but Numrich seems to be a bit light on stock of grips these days.

First off, thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions. That said, I ordered a set of old stock Sile grips from a seller on eBay, becuase I wanted to see how they were for myself, and the price was right. They arrived the other day, and I tried them on my model 28-2, onto which they were pretty good fit, better than I was expecting honestly, but not totally perfect. The grips I chose were essentially a copy of S&W's target grips, just without the logo. They lookgood and are made from a quality piece of walnut, but as most of you pointed out, they are no substitute for the real thing.

This morning fortune shined on me however. I popped into a gun shop in my travels that I dont hit up that often, and low and behold, in their case of oddball accessories, was a beautiful set of coco bolo S&W targets, circa 1995. Yes, not the exact right period grips, but way better than the Sile grips, and definitely better than the wrecked abominations I had lying around. At $75, in like new condition, compared to the pricing of similar grips on eBay, I feel like I got a decent deal.

Congratulations on finding an excellent set of S&W grips for your revolver. That gun looks terrific now. The rich grain on the Coco Bolo is stunning and adds a classy touch.
