What in the World? I think M-16 Night vision.
The UFO thread reminded me of the great movie Close Encounters that my son has not seen since he was little so we re-watched last night. I had forgotten about the troop scenes around The Devils Tower.
Look at these attachments to the M-16’s. I believe these are some sort of night vision scope. Are these authentic or some sort of Hollywood prop?
Anyone ever used one of these?

I’d guess movie prop. The gizmo looks like it’s either got a hyperbolic antenna or a rear view mirror mounted on top!

Have not ever seen Close Encounters. The optic pictured may be night vision, but definitely really old school stuff. Sincerely. bruce.

A goombahed mishmash of PVS-2 and PVS-4...as something else.

Bruce you should watch, it is very good, PG-rated clean entertainment. The special effects hold up very well too.
I tried to research what the optic is before I asked here and none of the traditional guns of Hollywood sites seemed too know either!

Close Encounters and the original Star Wars... that was a good year!
And that was a great scene... rounding up people who didn't believe in the fake disease outbreak the government was using to control the public... good thing it was only a movie!

Ah, the good old days - long hair and mustaches, "tiger stripe" cammies and 1911s.
Not to mention LAWS rockets mounted atop the carry handles of M16s.

Movie props to be sure.
I used the first gen PVS 2 on an M16A1 in VN, and while it was pretty big, it wasn't nearly as big as those creations. I ended up using several generations of night vision (scopes and goggles) and they just kept getting smaller and lighter as the technology matured.

Looks a bit like that infra-red set up used on the M1 Carbines.

Hittman—I found a picture of one of those online and you are correct. I think we had a thread on here about one too (I seem to recall one of our members bought one). The one in the second picture is similar/same to the M1 Carbine one. The first monstrosity I could not find anything on, but I assumed it was real (Assuming it would be easier to use a real product than create some fake prop. But I am obviously no Louis B Mayer or Steven Spielberg!).
I knew we have so many servicemen here that someone would know if it was fake or real.

A friend of mine had one of those M1 Carbine set ups .... it was total and complete. A pretty rare item for sure.
Think there was also maybe a recent American Rifleman article on them too.
