My Ugliest Rifle
I bought this bubba'd Yugoslavian Mauser almost ten years ago, along with a bunch of factory ammo, plus dies and bullets, then tucked it all away without giving it much thought. I shot it once when I bought it, and it hit a can at 70 yards, so I called it good. Well, I finally got the itch to take it out and give it a thorough testing. What a surprise! I never even had to touch the sights. Both groups were from sandbags, but considering I was using open sights, I'm pretty impressed, both with the rifle and my own shooting!

Good shooting! Do the numbers on the rifle match?

That's a funky looking Mauser 98 short rifle. The stock doesn't have a sling slot for a kickoff and a 98k or a Yugo M48 would have a bent bolt. How is it marked on the receiver ring? Stock looks like a Czech VZ 24 with the hole for the side sling filled in.

Thank you for your reply, I think you may be correct! I'm including photos of the markings, including the crest.
It was marked "Yugoslavian Mauser" in a little store near here, which is also a convenience store, and serves as a tavern for the locals. Like I said, I bought it, took a couple shots with it, then stored it away. I'll be the first to admit it's funky looking, but it sure shoots. My original thought was to someday trim the barrel down to about 16.5" for a handy little brush gun, but after seeing how accurate it is (and that's with my 60 year old eyes) I'm just going to leave it as is.
When I posted the photo in my OP, I knew that someone would be able to fill me in with any details!

Aha! The Yugoslav 24/47, the model I always forget despite owning two!

I bought one of the Yugo Mausers years ago when they were flooding the market. Cost about $150. IIRC along with a bandoleer of ammo. I intended to shoot it but I discovered it was full of cosmoline and lost interest. A local guy bought from me for what I had in it. I haven't seen him since but I heard he was building ARs and selling them without any papers.

7.92x57 or 8mm Mauser if you prefer. They are pretty tame to shoot with the 196gr SP PPU ammo marked "8mm" because it is downloaded to save blowing up GeW 88 Commission rifles.
The proper stuff, either WWII surplus or the Yugo M75 sniper ammo is a whole other barrel of monkeys. Turk 8mm can be fun, too. Velocities can exceed 3,000 fps from a 29" barrel. Not for use in any semi autos.

I have had a few of them including a scoped one they will shoot as good as any modern rifle in a similar caliber.

Thank you for all the replies. It shot so well, I decided my next step would be to find some .323 cast bullets, and try a reduced load with Unique.
