What do you mean by "scrap find"? Is it lurking online or at somebody's house?

Those can fetch major money from what I've seen at past auctions, around four figures.

More detailed pics would help. Looks nice, several divisions were armed with these, IIRC. Original sling? Good bore? If it takes a standard Mauser sight hood and rod, they are available. Check out the K98 Forum.

Very cool old rifle. You don’t see many out there on the market.

If it is all matching, original condition, non import marked, non molested, stock non sanded, decent bore, to a collector that wants it badly, that rifle would bring $2k+

Cocks on close unlike the K98k. Sweet looking rifle.

I had a 98/40 about 20 years ago. It wasn't as nice as the OP's plus the bolt assembly was mismatched to the rifle but was just one number off. I don't recall how much I sold it for back then but it was about the same as a K98k in similar shape.

It's an interesting design with a Mannlicher action, Mauser magazine and Lee Enfield-style stock with its butt separate from the forend.

I don't know what the OP's rifle is worth but they are not frequently encountered compared to all the K98k Mausers that are out there.

Fun fact, the G98/40 featured heavily in the holodeck scenes in a Star Trek: Voyager double header regarding a fun-loving bunch called the Hirogen.

That is a good gun, getting it into the hands of a collector that will pay top dollar maybe a trick.
