I kind of have a thing for CZ guns and clones, and I just got the last piece of the CZ P-07 "triad".

A couple of years ago, I picked up the "Good" one of the three, the SAR Combat Master 9 Gen2. An insane bargain at $250 shipped, it's had well over 1000 rounds through it with the only two stoppages being due to deformed WWB ammo that wouldn't chamber. I added a laser and some glow in the dark paint to the sights and it's my "house gun". IMHO, it has the best grip ever put on a gun. MUCH better than the "real CZ" does. I have the "medium" grip back on mine.

About a year or so ago, I found a CZ Custom shop P-07 on GB, "Better". Barely shot, it has a great trigger and fiber optic sights. It was $625 with shipping, in the original box with 5 factory mags.

And yesterday, I got the "Best" of the three, even though it only has plain old 3 dot sights, a Sphinx SDP Compact. All the metal parts, alum and steel are made from billet, and the only plastic is the bottom grip, which is almost as good as the SAR's is. I put 100 rounds through it yesterday without even lubing it, and it was flawless. When I cleaned it, the perfect machine work is just awesome. I'm going to put a fiber optic front sight on it ASAP.

I like CZs also, my latest is a CZ75D PCR.

Ditto. That PCR Compact DA/SA is the performance sweet spot in my CC lineup. Heavier than most, but elevates my shooting performance substantially.

The Sphinx SDP Compact is great; very good carry gun. Congrats!

This might be of interest to you: As you probably know, Sphinx was declared bankrupt in 2015 with KRISS (USA) taking over the brand name and pistol designs.

Since then, people involved with Sphinx (when it was still an independent Swiss manufacturer) launched a new company at the original Sphinx location in Interlaken, Switzerland. Their pistols are basically improved and modernized versions of the Sphinx designs. They are called Phoenix (... from the ashes of Sphinx), and their products are quite expensive. I had the chance to check out the all-steel version of their flagship model "Redback". It's a nice gun, very much like a Sphinx, but on a custom gun level. Definitely the ultimate version of the Sphinx design.

Yeah, I was aware of the Redback and wish I had the money for one. All steel guns always suck me right in.

I waited many decades to purchase a modern pistol in 9 mm. I found a used still unshot cz85db in orginal box with papers for $300. My love for cz pistols began. The cz82’s/83 caught my eyes next. Sweet double action first shot sold me. I’m not really a pistol guy. No plastic yet.

The cz85db is a amberdexterious cz75. I wanted a left handed pistol. Since I’m right handed, well was I became amberdexterious from working under dash boards on cars you need to be good with both hands.

I shot one of the first CZ-75's in the country. There was a guy in Las Vegas, who, along with a LVMPD detective named Arthur Chen, who had guns nobody else had. I wanted a CZ-75 from the second I shot one the first time, but I didn't get the first clone until about 1988? when I bought an FIE branded Tanfoglio gun. I really liked it, but it was sold off to buy the parts to build a new PC about 1995. Next clone I had was an EAA Witness bought around 2000 or so. Now I have a bunch of clones, and the only "real" CZ is a CZ-P07, as described above. I have a bunch of Tanfoglio, SAR, Canik, and IMI/IWI clones and near clones. to the point a "real CZ" is not a priority, but will happen one of these days, after the prices settle and guns aren't so scarce. An SP-01 is probably what I will end up with.

I really appreciate you posting this—when I think “Phoenix” I think Phoenix Arms, and I would bet 99% of American gun fanciers will too. Phoenix Arms guns could not be farther from some high-end Swiss made product.

I had owned CZ75s since the late 1980s and a few months ago shot a CZ SP-01 in direct comparison to a Sphinx AT2000S. The Sphinx has as tight tolerances as any of my Swiss SIG P210s and its trigger characteristics make the CZ appear very crude.

Yes, the name is somewhat unfortunate in that regard, but the "loss" of Sphinx was a very emotional thing for many in Switzerland, especially for the people involved, so I guess they really really liked the "phoenix raises from the ashes" idea and therefore went with it anyway.

It's nice, but it is a very heavy gun, not really an alternative to the SDP Compact. Also, the DA trigger wasn't all that great on the gun I tested, not on par with the Shadow 2 / Shadow 2 Orange. However, I think it was a 2017 or 2018 model, and I heard that they have improved the DA trigger pull in the meantime, but I have no idea if that's true.

The trigger can be fixed, if I can't do it, one of the CZ wizards can, so that isn't any real big deal to me. I'm an oddball, I love heavier guns, and own a bunch of all steel guns bought in some cases just because I liked the feel of them just picking them up in the store. Most all of my top "favorite" guns are CZ variants in nothing but steel, full and compact sized.

I took apart the SDP for cleaning yesterday morning and the quality of the machine work is very impressive, and the rainbows from the heat treat are pretty neat, too. I bought a fiber optic front sight for it, and the only thing I need to find is a spare recoil assembly for it. If I don't have one, it will almost for sure fail, and if I have one, it will sit in my parts drawer for ages, if not forever. I have a huge collection of Dan Wesson small and large frame revolver parts, built up from 1977 to today, and I've used two parts out of all of them, a trigger spring and the bolt spring, both were modified by a previous owner of the gun. I think one of the mainsprings is from 1978, soon after I bought a used 15-2 with a clipped spring in it and bought a replacement. Then I bought another 15-2 and got another spring and it's sat there, waiting but never needed. Th only guns I've had that actually needed most of the recoil springs I've bought were surplus Israeli guns like my Beretta 81, 84, and 85, and my Tanfos and Jericho 941 that looks awful, but shoots great.
