SHOT A RUGER 6.5 CREEDMOOR BOLT GUN
On Tuesday I went to the Range with a friend and helped him sight in his Ruger Precision Bolt action "AR style" rifle. It was wearing a Vortex scope with Parallax adjustment that we had just mounted.
After a few shots we had it pretty much sighted in and then fine sighted it at 150 yards. The gun had an excellent trigger which quite honestly is not usually one of Ruger's "trademarks" and had very pleasant recoil attribute - I was surprised at how light the recoil really was. I was very pleasantly surprised actually!
I shot 10 rounds out of the 6.5 Creedmoor at the 150 yard point and had 8 out of 10 shots in a 1" group! The other 2 rounds (flyers) widened the grouping to just under a 2" group - again, pleasantly surprised!! The rifle did have an adjustable Bipod and a rear steady post which came in handy.
All in all it's a pretty good rifle! Excellent trigger, smooth operation and the Vortex scope performed quite nice as well.
About the only complaint I had was that the noise from the 6.5 Creedmoor was annoyingly loud - like .223 /5.56 loud! Other than that it seemed like an excellent shooter and hunting gun. This was also my first time shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor round from any rifle - accurate!

A 14 pound rifle is an excellent hunting gun, only if ya don't have to hump it all day....
I've heard they make these things called suppressors, to mitigate that pesky '.223/5.56 loud'.

There is nothing new under the sun.
I have always been impressed with their accuracy, which helped lead to their popularity.
But I have never read anything about the cartridge. As usual I learn something, or am led to learn something, virtually daily on this forum.
I had no idea this is basically the old Swedish Mauser round-6.5 x55 mm. I saw a pile of surplus ones stacked liked cordwood on a table ones at a gun show as a kid.

I too did the research regarding its similarity to the old 6.5 x 55 and you are right-it is quite fascinating. What is old is now new again, over and over again

Maybe the Swedes and Northern Europeans DID have it right, early on. The Americans were all like, “but, muh .30 cal...” And the Swedes were just putting rounds where they wanted them to go.
Most people don’t think it is, but B.C. Is a real thing.

And if it's anything like the old 6.5X55 it's a reloader's dream. I get fine results with just about any medium to slow powder which is a big plus these days.

I bought mu M41 off a local guy a while back . We got to talking and he said he has one of these guns . He went on about the accuracy and low recoil and said it was one of his favorite range rifles .
I want one in 22 magnum , mainly to see if I'd like them before laying out the money for one in 6.5 or 308 .

Back around 1985 I saw surplus Swedish Mausers being sold at the old Woolworth's at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, MD.

Thanks John, it is not difficult! I laugh about the accuracy. The gun is stock out of the box with Nightforce glass. That target is my reload development. Hornady ELD 140g Match gave me 5/16" MOA. So that was my goal to try and match that and I did a tad better. I had not centered the development loads to the target as yet. I've also hit 10" steel at 1000 yards, you can see the hit marks with the scope too. Kind leaves you wondering what the hell do I shoot next?

What barrel length? 6.5 Creedmoor is a 62k PSI round, so even out of a 24" barrel it is sure to bark. 6.5 Swede runs at much less pressure, at least in US SAAMI spec. CIP ammo is a little hotter, but still not up to Creedmoor pressures.

I'm a 6.5mm fan and I not just talking about the Creedmoor. I just like calibers that are designed to use long skinny bullets.
There are some good engineering reason the 6.5mm Creedmoor works so well and tends to be inherently accurate.
The first half of this video does get into some of those engineering improvements over older cartridges.

I am new to the 6.5 CR world, recently picking up a CA Mesa last week to use for hunting coyote, deer and antelope from 50 to 400 yards. I’ve been eyeing CA’s Mesa and intrigued by the 6.5 CR. They seem like a good match so I killed to birds with one stone.
I’ve been a big fan 6.5mm fan since I first purchased a custom Sako AII in 260 Rem. That led to the the purchase of my Sako AV in 6.5x55, both have very mild recoil with 120s; they seem to perform well above their pay grade. Can’t believe I waited so long to pick up a rifle chambered for the CR. To my mind the CA Mesa and 6.5 CR are a perfect marriage.
I’d be interested in learning what everyone is using for hunting loads. I’ll likely stick to 120s.
Powders I am considering:
Varget
H4350
Superformance
RE16
Thanks

I’ve not shot the 6.5cm but did have a 6.5 Swedish Maser. When I bought it in the early 90’s a local sporting goods store had nail kegs stuffed with surplus rifles for $39-$69 each. I picked out quite a few rifles and one was a nearly new Swedish Mauser 6.5. You’re right about this cartridge, irs very accurate and low recoil. That was one of the rifles I’ve regretted selling.
I can’t speak for the 6.5cm RPR but several months ago I bought an RPR in 22WMR and put a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12 AO scope on it. If the 6.5 is anything like the 22WMR it’s a taco driver. With the right ammo I consistently get 1/2” 5 shot groups on calm wind days.

I had a Ruger American Predator with older Leupold Mark 4 3-9 scope mounted on it along with a Howitzer style mule brake. That rifle is a constant 1/2 MOA rifle with a number of factory loads. With the brake there is almost no recoil and you can see the hits as they happen through the scope. I had the top turret engraved for the Hornady Precision Hunter 143 grain ELDX load.
It is almost embarrassing that a rifle that cheap shoot so great. It has put two pronghorn in the freezer. One was a B&C record shot by my grandson, who now owns that rifle.
Predator and groups at 200 yards.

My grandson with his trophy. He shot it from the far ridge behind him after making a 1200 yard stock. The buck didn't take a step.
And with proud grampa.
