Default Need disposal advice on Colt Trooper

My wife is back in Chicago helping her 81 year old Sister wind up her recently deceased Husbands affairs. He was a Chicago Policeman at one time and then went into Security for United Airlines. They found a Colt Trooper 357 in VERY poor condition. She sent me photos and asked if I wanted it. I have no need for this one and it is in BAD shape blue wise and grip condition. None of the kids want it. I suggested turning it into the Suburban PD where she lives and ask for a receipt. The more I thought about this I became concerned as I do not know Illinois law and don't want her to have any problems What is the best way to deal with this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Windypoint,

I will glady take it for parts. PM your wife's or her sister's contact details and I can pick it up and provide transfer paperwork.

I like Yeti's idea hate the idea of turning any gun over to the police where it will likely wind up crushed. i find it remarkable none of his kids want it, but I guess I am a dinosaur from a time when well loved and used firearms were handed down to be loved and treasured more....

About the best use I've found for any Colt revolver is a trotline weight, the heavier ones work best.

Take yeti up on his offer he's in state so there wouldn't be a problem shipping or transfer fees.

If this is an original Trooper .357 all of the parts other than the barrel are exactly the same as the Colt Python. Could be a little gold mine of valuable parts there! There are probably people who would welcome the chance to acquire one as a restoration project also.

Does the gun still fire, or is it inoperative? If it still works she could possible put it on consignment with a dealer or auctioneer and get some money for it.

lol, seriously, think about it. She found a revolver, so she had no idea it was there. What is she supposed to do, go down in the basement and touch off a few rounds?

That would definitely cause some excitement in the neighborhood.

Taking the gun to a qualified gunsmith to make a determination would probably be a better idea.

Thanks guys, sorry it couldn't be saved.

Had a old self proclaimed convicted felon bring a crossbow by the police training center (my current assignment) the other day. He wanted me come on down to the pawn shop with him and pawn it then give him the money. He also had a bag of crusty/rusty old 12 ga shotgun shells he wanted me to buy. I took the time to explain to him it was a violation of federal law for him to possess ammo of any kind then told him I was going back inside to demill the ammo then dump it in the trash and when I got back if he was gone we could both forget we ever met. I did and he was.

That's always sad when valuable classic guns end up being destroyed. I talked to an ex-Baltimore cop who told me how a lady brought in a Colt Single Action Army and another classic handgun to be destroyed. He said that he couldn't talk her out of it and get her to sell the guns. She just wanted them destroyed.

Every so often though things work out. I was in a gun shop in Reading, PA and part of the inventory was a Colt Trooper and a High Standard .22 Supermatic Citation with barrel weights and Herritt grips. The widow of a competitive pistol shooter tried to get the police to take and destroy them. Happily, whatever police department she went to told her these guns were valuable and to take them to a gun shop and sell them. That's how these guns ended up in that shop. The High Standard is now in my safe.

Wow, this thread is depressing. Colts as trotlines, gun buybacks, turn into local PD, "poor condition and I have no need for it"...seriously? One person's POOR rating could be SHOOTER condition for another.

No matter what, it would be a crime to NOT keep this old revolver in circulation among members of the hobby, whether as parts, a truck gun, a plinker or just for what it is...an old revolver with a story.

Depending on the neighborhood, no one may even notice. We are talking Chicago.

I was in HQ one afternoon when a gentleman walked in with a bag of guns. Said he wanted them destroyed. He had a degenerative disease and couldn't shoot anymore. He had a few nice guns including a Dan Wesson .357 and some .22's. I advised him to put them on consignment at a LGS but he said he didn't want to feel responsible if they were misused by someone who bought them. I then asked him if he would consider selling his weapons to Police Officers. He very gladly said yes. He was fine selling to Police Officers. Within a few hours he had legally disposed his collection and went home happy with a pocket full of money.
On a sad note, he had a Ruger Mini 14 barreled action plugged up with nails and silicone caulk. The story goes that when the PRNJ passed an assault weapon ban, he had stripped the weapon down and and threw the parts away. He disabled and kept the receiver since he didn't know what to do with it. That one went to the Sheriffs office for disposal.

It is in bad shape bluing wise and the grips are in bad shape. I surmise you got this from a photograph. Me, I's tell my wife, yea, I'll take it. When I got it, I would check it over to see if it was in good mechanical shape. If yes, I'd use it for trading material. If not, I'd still use it for trading material for the parts. If beyond salvage, I'd destroy it myself. No point in letting it go to the police based on a photograph.

Before turning it in for destruction, I'd sell it to a gun shop or put it on consignment at a gun shop.

In Illinois it is law for a resident to have a valid FOID (Firearms Owners I.D,) to posess a firearm. As a wife she may not have had one, and is now technically illegal to have possession of a firearm. Take advantage of the offer to take it for parts, and ask him to make a donation to the Police Officers Relief Fund from sale of parts.

So if I understand correctly every time a gun owner dies in Illinois, and their spouse has no FOID they immediately become felons? I would think there has to be some exemption period for a surviving spouse.

That doesn't sound too far from the truth. In NY you're in the same situation. As I recall the spouse can take the guns to an FFL where they're held, (if they're willing,) and the spouse has to apply for a permit. Once that's done and the spouse has their own permit, the guns may be transferred to their permit.

Depends on the neighborhood. When my son from Rogers Park goes to Michigan with me I sometimes have to fire a few rounds and set off the car alarm so he can go to sleep.

Geeeeez! The FOID law, I forgot that IL has a FOID law to VOID rights. I would think that there is something within the law that addresses inherited firearms. Then again, considering the reason for such laws, maybe not.

So you know about the three biggest lies in human history?
1. I'll still love you in the morning.
2. The check is in the mail.
3. I'm from the government, I'm here to help you.

No. I leave it to Mrs. WP to determine. It is very nice of her to help her sister sort out what is always a difficult and emotional situation. Prayers for her sister and the family.

Very sorry about the loss of your BIL, Windypoint.

Once that's done and the spouse has their own permit, the guns may be transferred to their permit.
In NY,,if the spouse has no NYS P/P,,the handguns must be placed into L/E Property.
They will be held for a max of 1 yr. under NYS law. Any NYS L/E agency can
take in the property. It doesn't have to be the jusristiction that the death occured in.
During that yr:
-The spouse can obtain a NYS Permit (if she/he does not already have one) and then collect the handguns onto their NYS Permit.
-The spouse may designate to the L/E agency that the gun(s) be sold/transfered to an FFL who must also hold a NYS Handgun Dealers Lic to take possession of them, or that the guns be sold to any other NYS P/P holder
The SAFE Act now demands that this sale would require that it go thru an FFL as well.
- The spouse may designate that the gun(s) be destroyed at any time in that one yr window..

If nothing is done within the 1 yr time period,,NYS law designates the firearms as 'Nuisance Firearm(s)'. and the NYS law demands that the NYS Police collect and destroy them.

Because of all this, some spouses, each with a NYS P/P keep each others handguns registered on both permits. Reciprocal Registration it's called and it's perfectly legal.
If one dies, there's none of the above to go through.
If a separation of parties takes place,,,well that can cause some difficulties of another sort.!

All this pertains to handguns only.
Long guns are not registered and are not subject to this except in cases where Local Law may exist requiring so (NYC?)

A NY registered A/W or Hi-Cap magazine I don't believe can be passed along to an heir upon the death of it's registered owner.

Sounds like the laws in California are not as bad as New York.
