I have a fairly new Rossi M92 44 mag. It just developed a problem in that the cartridge lifter is not moving all the way up although with a slight push it will move all the way up. The bigger problem is that when the lever is raised, it does not go all the way back down to allow a cartridge to be inserted into the loading gate. Do any of our experts have any advice on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

They generally ship from the factory heavily greased, and should be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned.

Thanks Bigwheelzip, but I don't think that is the problem because it worked fine the last time I shot it. However, if I can find disassembly instructions, I may try that to eliminate that possibility.

Another option that many on another forum use is to take off the wood butt stock and spay a can of non-chlorinated brake cleaner down the barrel, flushing the action without dis-assembly.

Yes, I am working it vigorously. That blooming carrier just won't go up or down all the way. It worked fine last time. I suspect a part may be broken or loose.

I suspect you may have some rough machining marks inside (they are notorious for this) and a pin or other part in the lift gate assembly that has shifted and is dragging on the rough machining marks.

The receiver for the Rossi 92 has several broached cuts inside and there were burrs at every cut on my 92. once I did the cleanup there and did a bit more smoothing my Rossi 92 now runs a bit more smoothly than my 1904 vintage Winchester 1892.

Now for the disassembly. This is a rather complex and fussy procedure and the last time I looked there wasn't anything directly for the 1892. However there was a video on the 1886 and both the 1886 and 1892 have the same procedure for disassembly and re-assembly. Following is a link to that video.

I bought one that would hang up. There was a burr on the rear of the lifter that needed to be removed with a dremel tool. It has fed great the last two years. The problem with rough machining is that occasionally burrs open and catch on stuff. I would hit it with rem-oil spray after removing the stock and cycle it 500 times to see if it improves. Oil as needed but run it a little wet.

My 357 had a loose screw that I noticed in time. Good idea to check all screws and pins.
Mine needs to be cycled firmly, even after hundreds of rounds.

There are Youtube videos on how to tune and polish these guns to make them slicker and smoother shooting, you might try one of those first before you send it to a gunsmith. My M92 .357 got a lot smoother after cycling the action about 500 times while watching tv.

Thanks to all for the help and advice. Using the video that scooter123 provided. I disassembled it and found that the carrier had come loose from its screws. Slicked it up a little while I was in there and it is much smoother now.

I have one that I "smoothed up" using a named smith's video, and a newer one that I took the wood off, sprayed it with carb cleaner, and then just cycled it about 1000 times while watching westerns. The new one is every bit as smooth as the smoothed one. Glad you found the problem with yours.

I have had 12 Model 92's over the years, I bought every one of them used, so they had been cycled lots before they ever met me. Two common problems I have seen are;

1) The loading gate screw. Too tight and sometimes won't flex the spring to load. Too loose and fall out with recoil vibration. Solution: adjust until it works smoothly. Then Loctite with the least perinate, I have used finger nail polish successfully also. (applies to models 92 & 94 only)

2) Several have been difficult to "Close" the lever into battery. Cause: The lever retention catch won't retract easily. Solution: Use a C-clamp to compress the latch. Then drift out the retention pin. The coil spring will most likely be full of grime. I flood the hole with break cleaner. If the spring is 3 coils install as is. If the spring is 5 coils, remove 2 before installing. Use C-Clamp to reinstall. Note: Failure to use C-Clamp has cost me a few of the latches! (this applies to models 71, 86, 92, & 94.)
