Default The second round of CMP 1911 sales announced.

1911 Information - Civilian Marksmanship Program

If you missed the first go around.

Previous buyers are not eliglable for another one at this time.

Glad I got a good one in the first draw. Of course, my wife might develop an interest in 1911s.

My wife seems extremely interested. Odd. I had no idea she was so determined to acquire one of these old relics.

I have read a little about the CMP 1911 program and have thought about signing up. It would be awesome to own one of these historic 1911's....but one question I have for anyone familiar with the CMP....when they pick your number and you make the purchase, do they send you any history of the particular gun you get?

No history is sent with the pistol. Most of these have lying around in storage for 30 plus years or more. The CMP has no way of knowing the history of any of these pistols.

Go for it, you'll enjoy what you get.

Me? I have no interest in something I had to have as a sidearm in the 1960's.
They were beat up then and no better now.....

Me and the wife both got one, I happen to have just talked about these to a recently retired Army Helo pilot and will get them lined up with the order forms.

We got one SG and one FG, both looked new rebuilt condition, the FG has a ding in the crown and I am guessing why it was down graded to FG, It was also one of the Albany rebuilds. The SG had no rebuild markings

I was successfully in round 1. During my purchase conversation I learned one of the reasons why round 1 took so long and how my 5 digit number was called when there were only 8000 guns. Many folks did not follow the instructions, did not pass the background and/or did not include a properly prepared package. Perfect example, do not mail your package early. Read and follow the instructions exactly. If they cannot find you, your out. The FFL you send must be valid or youre out. If your package is incomplete, its out and youll never even know it. Its check ride time and half will fail. Thats good news for folks who pay attention. Good lock, I got mine.

My FG gun was carried at the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

That's my story and I am sticking to it

Have you purchased one from the CMP?

The one I got wasn't beat up, just looked different because of the repark. The slide/frame fit is actually better than two newer Colt 1911's that I purchased. I would say it's in pretty good condition late 60's.

I've heard that some were in poor condition but those were field grade pistols, not service grade.

I had one issued to me also when I was in the Navy. Maybe the Army beat the carp out of them IDN, but Navy issue was good condition.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another but doubt I'll have a chance.

Somebody answered my post about how to get a history on a particular gun and recommended putting in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. I did it so we'll see what happens.

Oh they're gonna LOVE you
Not normally a betting man but I'll bet you a farthing they turn up nothing other than the fact that it was one of a **** load of .45's that were sitting around in a warehouse until they were given to the CMP for distribution.
Can't see the allure of these for the price other than you are buying the story and not the gun

I might as well get something for the thousands and thousands of dollars I've paid in taxes.

If information turns up like you've described it's more that I have now. I guess it's inherent in being a history buff.

I made a FOIA request on something else one time and it didn't cost me anything.

I got a Service Grade Colt the first round and Im very happy with it. It is in excellent shape.

Dont care if the history cant be verified. It was made in 1944 and hung in a GIs hip until it was put into storage sometime after July 1976 according to when it was worked over and probably parkerized. It might have stormed the beach at Normandy or helped liberate a concentration camp. Or it might have guarded Quonset huts filled with dirty GI underwear. I dont care. Its the real deal and Id take it before ANY modern 1911, especially the budget 1911 GI clones.

My thirst has been satisfied. I shoot it once or twice a year. Nothing but my own reloads. Hasnt malfunctioned yet. I wont need another one. Let somebody else get it. But Im not sorry I paid the money.

Good for you. I got a Service Grade gun of a similar vintage. I figured go for the best condition. It must have been rehabilitated well because the slide has very little movement on the frame. I've shot mine and I'm impressed how well it would shoot. I don't plan on shooting any +P loads in mine either.
