Default Couple of not fancy Rugers

Doc44 showed off his collectible Rugers in another thread (I do like the ivories on that Blackhawk). I have two Ruger 22 auto pistols and of course I have a story.

Over the years I have purchased 4 or 5 Ruger Standard Model 22 pistols. I always paid $100. For years that seemed to be the going rate. I wound up giving them all away. A friend's brother came on a Sunday to repair my furnace one winter. When he refused payment I gave him one of the Rugers.

I gave my groomsmen guns as gifts at my wedding. One of them got a Ruger. That sort of thing. I kept buying then but I never had one because I kept giving them away.

In 1999 I was living Utah. Went to the show in SLC. Was walking the aisles behind a fellow who was carrying a pair of Ruger 22s. One short barrel Standard Model and a 6&7/8" Mk I Target Model. I saw him show them several times to guys without making a sale.

Finally I asked to inspect the handguns. He said he wanted $100 for the Standard and $125 for the Target. There was that $100 price again. So I bought the Standard. Followed him for 10 minutes before stopping him again. Asked if he would take the same money for the Target since I bought the Standard. He would. He had the original box for the Target.

A little online research showed the Standard Model dated to 1955. My birth year. Cool. The Mk I was made in 1966. The year my lovely wife was born. Must have been kismet.

After 21 years they are still with me. I'm keeping these.

I have a Standard that my brother left to me . It to dates to 1955-56 according to the Ruger website . I still shoot it regularly and while it's not a tack driver , it is very accurate .

I would buy those all day, every day, for $100.

I have a Ruger Standard from 1958 that I gave $125 for. Guess I was robbed.

Ruger .22 pistols are great. I have three of them, a MKIII Target, Stainless Standard, and a blued "50th Anniversary" MKII Standard. The blue MKII Standard is my favorite to shoot and carry in the field, it's accuracy is almost equal to the MKIII Target.

A funny story: I was shooting my MKIII Target and my 50th Anniversary MKII Standard with my Nephew this last Summer. Suddenly, the MKIII Target wouldn't retain the magazine, as if the magazine catch was broken. I sent it back to Ruger, the sent it back with a note:

"Pistol received with wrong magazine, replaced magazine, pistol works fine."

Apparently me and my Nephew had mixed up the magazines from the MKII and MKIII. A MKII will work with a MKIII magazine, but a MKIII will not work with a MKII magazine, as there is no magazine catch notch on the magazine. Looked in the MKII Standard, sure enough it had a MKIII mag in it.

Now, I had to get my MKII magazine back from Ruger! I called their service number, within minutes I was talking to the technician who had looked at the MK III. He said "Let me check my box of magazines", I could hear him rummaging through the "Box O' Mags", he found the one I had sent in with the MKIII and sent it back to me, all is well!

I've had several Ruger .22 pistols over the years. I never seemed to be able to hang on to one.

A number of years ago, one of my daddy's friends died and left him his firearms. When my daddy died, those guns came to me. Among them was a MK I 6 7/8" Target. I fired this one a number of times after my daddy inherited it and it is very accurate. I've shot it a time or two since my daddy's passing. I intend to pass this one and the rest of my dad's guns down to my nephew.

BTW, did I mention that this Ruger is "US" stamped?

I have a 5.5" bull barrel. Used to shoot ground squirrels at a friend's ranch. Accurate to 65 yards or so.
