Modified 1911
I posted about a shortened BSR in the 1896-1961 section. Tonight, I was watching an episode of Gomer Pyle USMC where there was a war game between Sgt Carter's platoon and his friend/enemy Sgt Hacker's platoon. Carter captured Hacker and relieved him of a 1911. The first thing I noticed was a higher than usual front sight. Then I saw a rear sight that looked like an S&W adjustable rear sight mounted on the slide. That was a "thing" back in the day. In fact, a friend of mine had a gunsmith from Mississippi mount one on his 1911 slide.

Pretty much. This one had the rear sight set to the rear of the slide.

I remember talking to Andy Horvath about that. He advised to use a J frame sight as it did not have the elevation stud under the sight so less machining.

Austin Behlert added S&W rear sights to the slides by milling the top down. I'm sure that it was a popular addition as I have seen quite a few.

Also a popular option with the Browning HP.

All the ones modified with K-frame sights I've seen had the sight mounted at the rear of the slide.
I believe Jim Hoag was known for doing such modifications.

Don't think I've ever seen a HP like that.

It was very common years ago to put S&W sights on 1911's and HP's. What you saw could also have been some sort of prop gun.

I've seen pictures of J-frame sights on a Colt 1903 .32. Looked like a very nice improvement. I believe the work was done by Pachmeyer (Sp)? Probably by the man himself.
