On Yahoo.com today is an article, "Ruger Completes Marlin Firearms Acquisition," by Rhian Hurst (evidently his parents couldn't spell Ryan) from the aptly named, The Motley Fool. The article was illustrated by multiple pictures of a Savage Model 99 with ammunition in the foreground. While Arthur Savage contracted Marlin to build initial production of the Model 1895 while he readied his plant and equipment to build in-house, their collaboration ended approximately 125 years ago. One would think that a photograph of a Marlin lever action rifle might be a more accurate and appropriate accompaniment to the article. The Motley Fool wisely notes, "to improve our community experience, we are temporarily suspending article comment."

The author of the article doesn't really get to select the pictures. Blame the Photo Editor. And before we go tearing into any journalists or mass media, was anything in the article - other than the photo - demonstrably untrue?

Having been christened with an obscure Scottish first name, I am a little sensitive to this subject, so I Googled the name "Rhian"...

Turns out it's a Welsh girl's name, and can also be used as a boy's name. In fact, there are a number of prominent people -- mostly in Celtic countries -- who are named Rhian. The author of the article you cited appears to be a woman.

Making fun of peoples' names...sorry, not cool.

Since the Ruger 96 lever action rifle loosely, and very much on purpose, resembles the Savage 99, the writer and editors might have been thinking they were using a photo of a Ruger rifle.

Say what? How did we go from mistaking two rifles that look very much alike to "gun hating elitists"? If I'm not mistaken, the original article that was referenced was financial in nature...

I mean, I'm all for disliking Wall Street types but it seems that we missed a left turn at Albuquerque!

The yahoo article comments section was pretty entertaining. When they suspended it a few months ago, I stopped reading their articles. On a positive note, I now spend more time here

Get to know gun writers' bylines. An unfamiliar name usually means someone from an advertiser or some production asst. at a title.

Some at gun mags may indeed not know guns well. It's true writers don't choose photos, but I always correctly labeled mine. But an editor may still mess up.

This is a trend in blogs recently, many of the newspaper online versions have done this too.

Two reasons come to mind:

1. They are tired of being corrected (spoils the propaganda distribution)

2. The failing media can't afford to pay anyone to monitor and edit, and can't get any free "interns" to do it for nothing

Rhian may be a business writer, not a gun writer.

Today endless stream of 'journalists and novelists' bring to mind a great quote from noted publisher Christopher Hitchens:

"Everyone has a book inside of them, and for most that's exactly where it should remain."

There’s really nothing to see here. The Motley Fool writes articles about business and investing. It’s not a gun mag and they’re not gun writers. The vast majority of people who read that article barely looked at the picture. The vast majority of people who did look at the picture probably couldn’t tell the difference between a savage and a Marlin rifle, nor do they care. That doesn’t make them a moron.

Journalism is perhaps the only vocation whose practitioners are expected to appear as experts on topics they know nothing about.

Politicians too. You ever hear a politician properly describe a firearm?
