I've been using the exact same rifle in 280 for over 20 years. My favorite center fire deer caliber. All I shoot in it is my hand loads with a 140 gr Sierra Game king or 140 gr Federal fusion bullet. I'm not running them real fast. They crono at 2838 fps avg.

The straight-wall restriction has been the easy button for meeting the DRN's goal, while still offering better options the shotgun w/ slugs. The concern has always been range. 45-70 or 50-100 do not travel nearly as far as most bottle neck rifle calibers.

This makes a 444 Marlin acceptable. 200 plus yard gun. It's what I have used for over 45 years Got one shot drops out to 325 yards. I've always used the 265 Hornady lead....my rifle has never seen a factory loaded round.{I bought it new in the early '70's} 45 grains of 4198
I've shot many deer and several Black bear. Largest Bear was just short of 600 pounds.

When I get to hunt whitetails again I will use a vintage Remington Model 788 in .308 Winchester. I have other choices but that's my go to rifle.
Everyone likes pictures.
This was the rifle before my 2018 fire.
I loved that inexpensive Nichols scope. The scope on there now was given to me and it's way bigger and more powerful and way more than I'll ever need, especially since I won't hunt long distance.
I agree that a backup rifle is essential unless you only own one rifle. I never went into the deer woods with just one gun.
This was typically my back up gun:
I took some deer with that .30-30 M 94 but it was mostly because I wanted the challenge of the peep sight on there instead of the scope.

When going out of state or to Canada, I always take two rifles. You never know when you are going to have gun trouble and miles from home your whole trip can be ruined. I all the years and trips I only needed it once. I fell on ice covered rocks in Eastern WVa in 1974 and busted a scope. My spare rifle saved the trip. We had a loud mouth in our group that was always making cracks about guys bringing two rifles to deer camp. One year his Rem 742 broke 1st day of season. He didn’t have the nerve to ask to barrow a rifle.

7 X 57 Mauser ... a model 95 Spanish Mauser , barrel cut to 20 " , fitted with a Herter's black walnut Mannlicher stock..full length.
Bolt handle forged for scope . Drilled and tapped for steel tubed Weaver 4X scope in Weaver Mounts . Barrel fitted with Williams open sights.
Sweetest little rifle I ever owned... I spent many, many hours fitting that barreled action to that full length Mannlicher stock... but it was so worth the effort .
160 and 175 grain RN handloads did their jobs in the Louisiana woods .

12 ga. slug for hunting on Federal Land, Colt Light Rifle in 30-06 for private land and a Model 57 with a red dot sight for close shots. May take a .50 Dixie Gun Works Kentucky style muzzle loader or a 20 gauge flint lock trade gun if the terrain is right.

In a past life I have spent a week in the mountains and I always took 2 rifles. When bird hunting out of state I always took 2 shotguns. I have always thought that being a long way from home with a broken gun and no spare would ruin a hunting trip. Now I only hunt on the homestead and I put 5 shells in my M70 and after I kill 2 deer I replace those 2 in the mag. If I run out of bullets or the gun breaks it's just a short walk to the house. Makes sense. I’m a close to home type guy. I wasn’t considering traveling to hunt.

I haven’t chronographed mine, but I load 140 grain game kings atop 51 grains of IMR 4350.

I hunted for years using a pre-'64, 30-30 Mod. 94 my dad handed down to me. Last deer I took with it was a Black Hills whitetail spike buck back in 2011. I handed that Winchester over to another family member a few years back. Nowadays, I use a .280 Leupold-scoped Remington 700 CDL for deer, but I picked up another Mod.94 for heavy brush and wooded-terrain deer hunting. I also have a Ruger M77 RSI in .30-06 that I need to take to the woods for it's first deer.

An old Remington Model 8 in .35 Rem when I’m in the woods and shots inside 100-125 are likely and an early German Weatherby in .270 Wby with a Redfield 3-9 for everything else.

I have killed antelope, deer and elk with a 22lr, a 222, 223, 243, 6mm Remington, 25-35, 25-06, 308, 30-06, 300WM, 338WM. 357 mag, 30 and 357 Herrett, 44 mag and 45 colt. Here I could go out with a pellet gun or a 50BMG and be legal.
Oh and on the 22 lr deal, right in the pumpkin and down it went and stayed. Fire power is fine accuracy is final. But, if your not limiting yourself to head shots, I have learned that bigger is better for chest shots

Over some years, I somehow became 'deer rifle poor' and invented a niche for every conceivable deer hunting scenario. Too many, really.
My close-in brush guns that have collected a lot of venison are a Ruger .44 Mag. Auto Carbine with a Weaver low-power variable scope on it.
Another, sharing that duty is a Winchester Trapper Carbine (16") in .45 Colt. It has XS Express Ghost Ring sights on it. Took a large doe with that just the other morning.
Another I enjoy is a Rossi 92 .357 Mag 16" with a rear peep and Hi-Viz front sight. Short fast, works.
Another that does well in that role is a H&R Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W. I use basically mid-range handloads in that and no deer runs much.
My 'meat gun' that's the near-perfect Whitetail machine for much of my state is my Remington M7 in 7-08 in SS/Synthetic. An old Redfield 2-7x variable on it works great. Short, light, compact, accurate and OK in any weather.
For a little more stopping power, enjoy my Thompson Center Encore in .35 Whelen. It's SS/Synthetic, so again, weather matters not. It has an extra barrel in .50 cal. M/L.
A Ruger No. 1 in .45-70 is almost too pretty to use, but it's taken it's share of venison also.
Now - my usual practice is each season to place the first deer meat in the freezer with a rifle or carbine of some sort - one of the above or several not mentioned. (Some AR's, Savage 99 .300 Savage, Ruger 77 in .243, Win. M70 in .270 WSM, Marlin .30-30, etc)
After that, it's handgun - only.
And - I don't believe in optics on my hunting handguns. That takes all the 'handiness' away. If you take a handgun of any real size and place a scope on it, you may as well tote a carbine. (Just IMHO)
Hunting handguns are M27-2 5" .357, a Colt Delta Elite SS 10mm, a M58 4" .41 mag., a M57 6" .41 Mag., a M629 6" .44 Mag and a Ruger BH Bisley 5.5" in .44 Spl. Most of these have been blooded, except the Colt Delta Elite. It's jinxed and you will not see a deer if it comes along.
Pics are last Thursday's large doe taken with the Trapper .45 carbine and another, a decent buck taken with a M29 .44 6" on a season a few years back.

I’ve been thinning out and find myself with only 15 deer rifles. Only 3 of them are legal in Ohio. I’ve sold or traded all the magnum rifles. A 30/06 and 45/70 are baddest I got now.

I've got a number to chose from, but for over 20 years I always carry my Tikka 595 in 308 Winchester. It's got plenty enough power for whitetails, it doesn't kick, and it's extremely accurate.
