Default Anyone else get recently interested in a different type of firearm?

For some inexplicable reason I've recently been on the lookout for pre-WW2 20 gauge pump shotguns.

Anyone else have a type of firearm that has recently caught their interest.

I know what you mean. I can't remember what prompted it, but a few months ago, I became interested in Webley revolvers. I figured out they're too expensive for me pretty quickly and decided I could scratch the top-break itch by picking up an old Iver Johnson. I think I'm up to 5 or 6 now and recently moved on to Iver Johnson shotguns. I got myself a single shot Champion, but talked myself out of a SxS Hercules. I'm afraid I'm not done with the single shots yet.

Default New Interest

It seems that the only bright spot in 2020 is the rekindling of my interest in side by side shotguns for hunting upland game. In my youth I used a nice Ithaca SKB SxS for pheasants, but then I ended up going to pump guns. For some reason, three very nice SXS shotguns (2 Parkers and a Connecticut Arms RBL) have come my way this year. I've put one of the Parkers to good use already on the skeet range and in the pheasant fields over my Brittany Pointers.

I guess I’m just the opposite. Been looking for a replacement for my EDC 6906. Right now the CZ P-07 is in 1st place, just hate $600+ price tag. Joe

I was on the HighSchool and College Rifle teams.... and Summer Camp Rifle Instructor.... after graduating from Law School I started shooting handguns and rarely picked up a .22 rifle

About 8 years ago.... I got a CZ 452FS in .22mag..... as a walking in Penn's Woods varmint rifle...... sighting it in at 100yds and shooting it regularly that summer .... seemed to reawaken my interest in .22 rifle shooting......I've found it very relaxing to spend an hour or two at the Club shooting .22lr at 50 and 100 yds from three positions and off the bench ...... mostly stock sporting models CZs and Rugers scoped and iron sights.

I've been interested in one of those small shotguns, usually used for bedside or some type of home protection tool. Like a five-shot pump or semi-auto loader, but I've been told by someone who shares my retirement checks and annuity investments that I really don't need any more guns. I haven't looked very hard, just interested, but I really don't see a lot of pre-owned ones. I have an old double side by side and and old pump, .410s, but I've never had an opportunity to shoot them to check their patterns. Plus, they're just too long for an in-house gun.

Smile Horse and Rider

The Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle. I recently acquired
one, 2019 Brand New in the Box, and I am just intrigue with it!

Very well made, Simple to Operate, Simple to Clean, very Accurate.
I immediately gathered Reload Dies, and empty brass cartridges
to reload. Immediately bought a 2020 NIB Leupold Scope for it too.

This Winchester has the Controlled Round Feed with the massive
external Claw on the Bolt.

One very unique thing about it is Field Stripping the Bolt. With
the Bolt in the Action, put Safety in middle position, take out
Bolt, push in the Bolt Lock button, Unscrew Firing Pin
Assembly, and it's apart for cleaning. Unbelievable!

I have shot this Model 70 a lot lately! My Reloading makes it
cheap to shoot, about $23/bx 20 compared to $70+/bx 20

Over the years I have only owned Remington Model 700's (my
Rem Mdl Seven is a League by it's self).

Wish I had looked closer at Win Bolt Actions before.

Wrong time to be looking ....but a few years back I came across a used Mossburg Model 510 .20 gauge "Youth model"...... 18" factory barrel OAL is about 35" LOP 12" 3+1 plus 6 more on the stock. Its become our universal house shotgun...... IIRC cost me about $300 OTD at a local gunshop

I did recently buy this Savage Axis 223.
A while back I sold off most of my Centerfire Rifles, only keeping my 30-06 Carl Gustaf.
Lefty that I am, I have owned a number of Savages.
They are usually excellent shooters although a little plain.
As in Ugly!

All firearms catch my interest. From matchlocks(that I still do not own one, yet) to the famed(but still under development) caseless ammo firearms.

To my shame, I have to admit not owning a single pump action shotgun(in any caliber). I blame JMB and is "auto five"(of which I do not own one either. All my shotguns are 12 gauge and side by side ) for this.

But. I ain't dead yet.

Scratched that itch with a Uberti made Winchester 1873 clone. Around 30 years ago.

Yep, my latest craze is single action revolvers, I have been seeing Heritage revolvers at gunshops for years and finally decided on a 22 LR/Mag combo, weird safety and cheap alloy frame but it's pretty accurate and fun to shoot.
Decided to get something a little better so I won a Ruger single six 17 hmr on Gunbroker, took possession of it yesterday, appears that it will be fun also.

Single shot fireams have captured my fancy in recent years. The mystique of just one round fired accurately and doing the job is quite a switch from my previous "firepower is everything" attitude.

Sorry to say but the "Liberator" does not fit the "accuratly" bill.

It was intended to fire "point blank" to get "real" firearms from a dead "Jerry".

With all due respect, I beg to differ. The Liberator was designed to shoot accurately at a range of one foot. It fulfills that task quite well. I've even shot it at DOUBLE that distance and it put its round right where I wanted it, albeit sideways.

Most recently, I got interested in hammer fired Sigs that were being discontinued, and found the right deals at the right time on a P239 SAS and a P225 A-1, both in 9mm. I seem to split my handgun desires primarily between S&W revolvers and Sig hammer fired semiautos. That doesn't rule out other brands, however.

Anything is accurate at one foot, or even two.

But... Duly noted.

Edit. I've been itching to be able to use that line for a while. So thank you for the opportunity.

Agree. And this a WWII vintage pistol. The Sovietes did refurbish it though.

Hammer fired Sigs are good.

I wonder if one of these would turn up with Finnish capture marks on it.

Default It's complicated

I've always been a big S&W revolver guy. I've had and still have plenty of wheel guns from to 60's to the early 90's over the years.

But I was never a fan of S&W semi's, with the exception of the 41 and 52. I had those two models when I shot Bullseye. I sold both when I lost interest in the sport.

But I've found a new crush on 3rd generation Semi pistols. That's been my new obsession. I'm beefing up the collection with them.

The other is a rekindled romance. Older Ruger Mini-14 's, older 10-22's, older Single Six and Bisley revolvers.

I only have one piece of plastic left in the collection, and that may be sold soon. Good pistol (HK P30SK), but I prefer all metal now.

I guess your tastes change as you get older.

Last few gun shows I’ve been on the hunt for a pistol caliber lever gun. Either a Marlin 336 or a Winchester 1894 and probably in .38/.357, though I haven’t ruled out a Henry in .41 Mag. But I would prefer side gate loading and I wish Henry would introduce that in their pistol caliber lever guns.

Target .22 rifles- especially older ones with Lyman or Redfield sights...that are reasonably priced.

I've been a collector of rifles and MIlsurps for years. I have a large collection of SKS, K98s and other Military surplus rifles.

I have just started to delve into SW pistols. I have the catalog of SW and I am getting hooked.

so yes, while the rest of you talk about finding things other than SW pistols, I am coming here....

LOL it works both ways.. Glad to be here!!

I want to get back to, that means find the time, to build a couple more muzzle loaders.
I was into them as a teenager, then dropped them before I reached 20.
I briefly picked it up again about 20yrs ago and built a couple.
Had a lot of fun shooting them.
Sold them as I wasn't using them at all after a time.
Now I feel the need to get back to it.

I have plenty of odd parts, bbl's, locks, wood, ect. from projects never completed.
Time to get one or two into the rotation.

Building something custom but still conservative on any firearm is a favorite of mine.
I like the Pre-WW2 styles both US and European.
Now that I've pretty much cleared up customers work, going back to that is something I've looked forward too.
I've already finished a Krag sporter and a custom .22 Stevens bolt. They've been a long time waiting.

Well, not from the standpoint that I have to collect a particular kind. But, I owned a Kahr K9 in about 1998. Wound up selling it. I loved the way it fit my hands, the size and the weight. I've owned a lot of different handguns since then. But nothing quite satisfied me like the K9. I just sold my Sig P365XL that I aquired and never fired. Figured if I was going to invest a decent amount of money in a firearm I just as well have what I wanted. I was able to get everything back that I had in the Sig & accessories. I used that money to purchase a K9.

I HAVE developed a hankering for WWII era knives. I recently purchased a WWII Ka-Bar and two Cattaraugus 225Q knives. On the lookout for more.

Yes, I recently jumped into the AR15 with both feet. I'll be posting about one of the two that I now possess in this same forum. Here's a sneak peek:

Well not recently, but I went from collecting Mausers, and WW1, and WW2 rifles from all parties involved to gradually collecting Smith & Wesson antique up to prelocks. I do still have a Postal Meter M1 carbine, and two Mauser rifles for deer hunting. I would imagine most people's collection changes through the years.

That's kind of funny. I have had so many different interests over the course of time that it's nearly impossible for some particular firearms "type" to have not piqued my interest at some point in time.

S&W revolvers
S&W 3rd Gens
Old West guns - SAA types, SxS and pump shotguns, lever guns (especially Winchesters - I still have a few)
Colt double action revolvers (not for long - S&W beat that out of me)
Mouseguns
1911s (gave that up, too)
Browning HPs (still have one and a replica)
Hunting rifles (forever and ever amen)
M1A types (gave that up the next category)
Milsurps (all gone)
AR type rifles/platforms

I am now in the phase of If I like it I'll get one but mostly it has to be a gun that really gets my attention and I doubt that I'll "collect" anything specific anymore.

And then there are some guns I'll just never be interested in and it's a much longer list!

I forgot - everyone likes pictures!

BHP

Kareen - Israeli BHP - with Pachmayrs now gone

Oddball - a P4

I still have some mouseguns:

CZ Duo - made in German occupied Czechoslovakia - 1944

Beretta 950 BS with Duo but now dumped PSA Baby Browning (ick - ***, not psa)

Seecamp

Did someone say ARs? This one is crazy accurate:

That's just to jazz up my post a little.

Yeah, you're exactly right. And, apparently you and I are on the same page with this idea! Neither gun is worth much, if anything at all, except what you said there. I've been gnawing on this idea since I acquired these two guns. 16 1/2" is the minimum barrel length isn't it?

My firearms interests are cyclical. When my handgun world becomes over saturated, my primary focus goes back to long guns for a bit. I am currently in long-gun mode and have been for the last 2-3 months.

Isn't this what it really comes down to? Why else would I have a Webley .455 revolver from Great Britain and a Lahti 9mm from Finland?

I'm a sucker for Mannlicher/full stock rifles.................

A Ruger 77 International in .243 started it back in the 70s.

Stumbled onto a CZ 452 FS/mannlicher in 2011... since have added 4 more in .22mag .22lr and a 527 in .223/5.56

Also accumulated three Ruger 10/22 International/ fullstocks.

Missed out on a Flagg custom built mauser/mannlicher in 7x55(?).. pre internet and had not heard of Flagg's .... when I came back to the Burgh found out it was a LGS just down the road from my Apt.

16 in. for a rifle. 18 in. for a shotgun. I wouldn't cut shorter than 18 1/2 in. and 19 might be safer. Sometimes the govt. has weird measuring devices. The overall length is 26 in. and I would want a inch or two extra on that. Larry

Sort of a deviation from the main topic, but I have a goal of trying out as many different guns before I die. I once bought a P08 Luger knowing full well I couldn't keep it had it for a week got to run a few boxes of 9mm through it sold it the next week for what I had in it lol.

Barrels are measured inside and parallel with the bore to a closed bolt. I have a rod marked at exactly 18” for shotguns. If there is less than 1/4 inch of barrel past the mark on the rod I will not buy the shotgun.
