I think it is part of someone's family history.
I dont want it destroyed, but I have to be able to identify it so I can try and reunite it with the owner.
Serial number on the scabbard matches the serial on the grip.

It is French, for the Chaspot(SP) rifle, IIRC Dates to the 1870s I think.

This bayonet is French. It is the Yataghan-Bladed 1866 bayonet. Rudi is correct, it is for the 11MM 1866 Chassepot rifle.

Rudi has it right. Its the model of 1866 bayonet for the French Chassepot rifle. It should have the manufacturers name and year made on the spine of the blade.

Okay, awesome.
Is it common or uncommon?
Not worried about value. I think it might be important to someone's family.
Just trying to get it home.

I’ve never seen one that I can remember. It’s been a while since my last gun show, though.
Wicked looking sticker
