Had AR-7' from 3 different makers over the years, but no Henry. All were less than 'Meh' and I had little confidence in any of the 3. Got my first one in the late 70's, an Armalite, IIRC, for $70.00 or so.

BUT, I really liked the concept.

Then, in 2004 or so, I got a Marlin Papoose. WAY more expensive than the AR, but it WAS a Marlin after all and I could afford it. Ran good from the git, but really smoothed out after I let my son and a friends son run a brick of CCI SV through it at the friends backyard range.

With the padded case, it's easy to chunk in the trunk for long trips if need be and so far, has served my need well.

SO, who has these type of .22's?

I have a Ruger 10-22 takedown

Am going to include my newer Ruger American compact in 22 magnum with the shorter 18 inch barrel. Synthetic stock and gun is very light for carry and still packs a wallop up close for some varmints. Nice gun for the $280 I paid for it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "survival rifle," but if I had to depend on just one rifle to "do it all,"...i.e. foraging (anything from grouse to squirrels to deer) and self-defense, I'd probably go with one of these:

Or my Winchester 9422M in .22 magnum.


You can throw 500 rounds of either one in back pack or saddle bags without noticing any considerable weight. Nothing real fancy, but both dependable work horses. I'd feel comfortable with either one.

I had an AR-7 from Armalite. It was kinda cool, but was a jamomatic. I sold it last year. My survival rifle is a Savage 24 BDL 22lr Over 20ga. I also have one in 22 mag over 20ga and one in 22lr over 410. Not much for firepower but are very handy and versatile. Breaks down into three parts and fits pretty well into a pack. Also made braided paracord slings for them, ya know, just in case.

Always wanted the Marlin Papoose as a kid in the 90s...sadly I don’t think I’ve seen once since.

I scored a Savage 24c .22/20g early this year - it’s pretty nifty but has a cruddy feeling trigger. Still haven’t shot it lol.

I've got a Springfield M6 scout (.22 LR and .410) as well as a Marlin Papoose. I love both rifles. The m6 is tough to shoot for some folks due to the squeeze lever/trigger but I find it very accurate and have no issues with it. While I had one Papoose that wouldn't run for anything, and it was basically brand new in the box (I think I know why the original owner never shot it!). Made some moves to get another near new example and this one runs like a sewing machine. With some factory Marlin 15 round banana mags it really becomes fun to shoot.

Back then, it was pretty much a break down .22 that you could stuff in a BOB for instance. Not a lot of choice back then. Isn't the take down 10-22 fairly recent? Like in the last 20 years or so?

I’ve got one of the great “survival” rifles from the not too distant past. A Remington Nylon 66.

I had a Henry AR-7. Nice little rifle, but the trigger was heavy and gritty. However, its a very simple mechanism. I took it apart and did a little polishing. That made a world of difference.
Never really warmed up to it. It felt kinda awkward in my hands. Finally just sold it.
As for "survival rifles", I guess that would depend on what you were surviving. Lost in the woods or the end of the world? Could be anything from a 10-22 to a M1A. I got both scenarios covered.

Survival in what type of situation?

When discussing 22 rifles I think of a takedown that can be carried disassembled in a backpack or a case that will not attract attention. Something such as the AR-7 or modifying a Ruger 10/22 with Magpul stock.

The old trusty Winchester Lever Action 30-30 fills most of my big game hunting needs.

For every other situation a AR-15 will work well. Actually the AR in .223/5.56 is becoming a common deer hunting choice.

Ruger 10-22 takedown in SS. It carries in a standard backpack. Doesn't scream "GUN!" when broken down. Is a 10/22 so its reliable, ammo is relatively cheap and easy to find, parts are pretty common and working on it is pretty easy. Shoots well, relatively accurate, and is reliable.

P.S. It's threaded so it takes a suppressor too.

I interpret the term in the aviation sense, and I keep a few options on hand

1) A lightweight, 16" pencil barrel AR-15 with a .22 LR conversion kit. A pair of loaded 30 round .223 magazines, a 30 round .22 LR magazine, and a couple hundred rounds of .22 LR ammo pretty well cover it for hunting small to medium game if I ever have to walk out.




Unfortunately, some places are not semi-auto friendly. For example it's actually easier for an American to get a firearm into Canada than it is for a Canadian to get one into the US - but that doesn't apply to semi-autos.

In that situation, the same case holds a 24" Model 92 takedown in .45 Colt, or a 9422.



There are pros and cons. The .22 LR cartridge is small and light and you can carry a lot of them, but it's not much use on anything larger than small game. A Model 92 in .45 Colt launching a tier 2 load with a 255 gr bullet at around 1800 fps is much more effective on larger game, and even bear, but it's not a good choice for small game.

One option is to carry the .45 Colt and another smaller take down rifle in .22LR like my 1890 Winchester. It's a great option if there are two of you to split the load you'll have if you have to walk out. The case is small and the rifle itself is quite light.




Then of course there is the M6 Survival rifle, marketed first by Springfield Armory and then by CZ (who made them all anyway). I had one in .22LR/.22 Hornet, but the .22 Hornet barrel had horrible accuracy. I sold it and went back to using the earlier .22 LR/.410 model I already had and kept.

It's still not ideal as while the .22 LR barrel is quite accurate for the type (1" 5 shot groups at 50 yards), the .410 is a short range proposition with shotshells - 20 yards or less on birds, and .410 slugs deliver terminal ballistics comparable to a .380 ACP, and are not all that accurate beyond about 30 yards.

If I come across one in .22LR/.45 Colt I'll probably buy one and see how well the .45 Colt barrel really shoots.

Mine would also be a 10-22, but with a Gemtech suppressed barrel.

I would prefer something visually low-profile and quiet that would not attract undue attention, like my CZ 452 FS bolt-action rifle chambered in .22 LR, or maybe it’s mate in .22 Magnum.

I have a camouflage take-down 10/22 scope with a Weaver 1-3X scope and a Spectre II supressor with 10 round and 30 round mags and CCI standard velocity ammo in the factory take-down case ready to go.

Just bought a custom Ruger 10/22 with a heavy target barrel. Figured I could get 5 quick shots accurately for most situations and it was a great buy. It has a reputation of going bang when the trigger is pulled. Not exactly a long range gun but not sure what a survivor situation will be like. Will be easier to carry .22 ammo then .223. Larry

Nothing around where I live that cannot be handled with rim-fires, including bipedal predators.
Low noise helps keep a low-profile in defensive situations away from home. You want to be the “ gray man “ that few people notice or remember in a civil unrest situation.
Most of the animals encountered in the wild are small game.
Feral dogs don’t do well against rimfires either.

Hard to go wrong with the Savage 24C .22lr./20 ga.

I've always found the survival rifle concept a little silly but I liked the Armalite AR7 I had, and other ones like that get my interest too.

The only rifle I have left that kinda fits the bill is my Chiappa Little Badger. Decent sights, truly good trigger, dirt cheap, and threaded for a can. It's light enough that I can toss it in with my stuff when I'm backpacking for plinking or small game. I'm not gonna survive for months on end with it, nor would I off any takedown rifle (or normal ones for that matter), but they're fun and can get a little fresh camp dinner if the fishing isn't the best that day.

I have the Savage 24C 22/20gauge, 20" barrels buttstock ammo trap. I the case I adapted to it I have 40 rounds of shotgun ammo: 10 slugs, 10 No. 4 buck, 10- #4 bird shot and 10- 7.5 bird shot. Along with 2-100 mini mags. scope, sling and cleaning kit. Great set up but if I lived where larger animals were a problem I have the 357/20 & 30-30/20 (26" barrels).

If I knew the problem was coming, it wouldn't be survival, it would be an outing!

I don't think I would survive very long taking on any part of our government's military, so that's not a consideration.

If I'm not outnumbered too badly by zombies, riff-raff, and run away school teachers; I would think any centerfire lever action would work fine. (my 32-20 is a little light weight though, so I'll amend it to 357 up to 45-70).

Or like my brother says, Survival kit: One Swiss Army Knife, One American Express Card, one hotel room! He can survive anything he is likely to encounter!

Survival to me means killing small game to eat?
A BB gun or pellet gun will do it very quietly not to attract people. The old single shot and pump 22’s using 22 shorts would work.

During the depression the my great uncle the story goes he would shoot small birds lined up on the peak, roof of the chicken coop. My great aunt would clean them and in tomato sauce they went. That’s survival at its finest.

Survival for self defense is another story. A 12 ga with “00” buck end of story.

I bought mine at the beginning of one of the "panics", I think it was Sandy Hook. As a result the dealer charged me full retail, however it was his last one and a customer offered me an additional $100 for the rifle before I left the store. I turned him down because I wanted the rifle and had no idea when another would be available. That rifle has gone on every camping trip since though and most vacations.

Take-down Ruger 10-22..... for that matter any 10-22 wish they still offered a .22 mag version.

That said.........

Ruger's American Compact rifle in .22mag. 18" barrel OAL<36" 5.3lbs and 9 round rotary mag... 15rd factory mag option.

Ruger Am. Ranch Rifle in .223/5.56 which take AR mags. 16" barrel OAL 36" at 6.1lbs... C-products makes some nice short 10 rd mags that give the rifle more of a SMLE look.

Ruger 77/357 that pairs nicely with any .357 Smith revolver.

Looks like I'm a Ruger fan ................

Another good option is a CZ's 527 mid-size mauser action carbine in either 7.62x39 or .223/5.56.... < 6lbs 37" AOL 18.5" barrel and 5 round detachable mags. Mine is a FS/mannlicher with 20 " barrel no longer offered.

CZ .22 mag bolt guns.... mine are older Model 452s FS/mannlicher stocks w/ 5rd detachable mags and small 1-4x20 Leupold scopes.

So would I.

Shorts to Long Rifles, it's a take down design, it's very accurate, and I shoot it well enough to reliably eat.

That's if we're talking 22s.

Another vote for the 10/22 in stainless steel of course. The 10/22 would feed you and could be used for self defence. I also have a .17 HMR Marlin 917S in stainless steel that is probobly the most accurate rifle I own. I can shoot golf balls at 150 yards at about a 99% hit rate. Yea a Marlin who wouda ever thunk a Marlin. So for a one shot kill on small game the Marlin would keep me eating until the ammo runs out.

In one of my LGS he has a round gun rack in the corner with ex military 22 training rifles and older 22 rifles collecting dust. Do your homework online first and search for 22 cal military training rifles this way you will know what your looking at. These can be affordable too. If it’s missing a few small parts check e-gun parts.

I had a takedown 10/22 but didn't like the problems with the scope mounted on the receiver and not the barrel. That leads to problems maintaining zero. Early Brownings had that problem so they moved the scope mounting location from the receiver to the barrel. I have more accurate 22's, but I guess my youth model 10/22 would be my pick because it's compact, accurate enough, and reliable.

The Takedown 10-22 really don’t appeal to me.
But the Folding Stock 10-22 in Post 32, I do like that!

I had to have one.
Neat, slick, beautifully made, finished, ejects down (Lefty), loads in the stock, OMG Nice!
The one I bought was the absolute worse 22 I ever had or probably saw.
I was raised on baseline model Single Shot and Tubular Repeaters.
They were all good shooters.
So I go uptown and get a Pretty Boy, it’s a piece of ****!

I have options but my scrounge for game bag has a 550 rd and a 333 rd boxes of 22lr, 75 20 gauge #6 shot, 15 rifled slugs and 15 #3 buckshot rounds. To accompany them is a Savage 24 22lr over 20 and a Ruger Mark II or a High Standard 5" Sentinel.

Some thoughts on the Take-down Ruger 10-22.....after watching too many episodes of "The Walking Dead"..............

First the take down appeals to me for storage and transport.....

If it ever came to a "survival" situation I see myself putting the two halves together using 3-5 rds to check zero.... and using as is...... not taking it apart and putting it back together everyday. Maybe only taking it apart if I need to hide the fact I have it........

That said mine is actually equipped with a "AGP Arms" folding stock (24" w/ stock folded)...... for the best of all worlds and a Bushnell TRS 25 red dot sight (4 extra batteries in the case) and a quick detach single point sling..... I can wear it under my arm under a coat..........in an urban setting. While IIRC there are 2 25rd mags in the Ruger case (I blacked out the Ruger "Red Bird" on the bag) I put 2 10 rd mags butt butt giving me a more compact package but still have 20 rounds in/on the gun. So the case has 1 10rd , 2 20rd clips and 2 25rd ruger mags.


So once the vaccine turns you all into Zombies..... I'm good to go!!!!

I always wanted a 22 Hornet survival rifle (one of the early ones). Currently have an M-1 clone 10-22 and wife has a scoped 10-22 International. What caliber has killed more deer than any other? Twenty-two long rifle=the poachers favorite! A couple of 22 LRs will ruin anyone's day! Under survival situations, hunting laws be d-----d!

I would say only a shotgun (20, 16, or 12) would be more versatile!

I've thought about buying one of those kits for my ar where you can take it down into two pieces. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I had a Henry survival rifle, semi-auto. Neat package, stores in the stock and it floats. However, the accuracy was way off for a .22. The idea is good if they could just make one that was reasonably accurate. I got rid of it, thankfully right after the National Rifleman did an article on them. Thanks, NR.

I got if for a truck gun, no plans for a "survival" rifle. I can't imagine surviving with only a .22 rifle.
