? Remington 580 bolt blocked?
I am inspecting a very clean Remmy 580 for someone.
I have zero time behind a 580.
When verifying empty..... the bolt hung up on a small single screw from underneath the feed area. The screw is turned up and is blocking the bolt to go fwd into battery.
I would install pics, but my pic host is down.
I tried "googling" this screw..... came up with zero.
can someone tell me what this screw is for, and I am assuming I should back it out to allow the bolt to move fwd?
thanks

Mike... I think that screw just holds the filler in the bottom of the action that is necessary to make the 580 a single-shot instead of being open there, as it would be to feed cartridges from the magazines of a 581 or 582. Why it is sticking up enough to bind the action I do not know. I’ve never actually had my 580 out of its stock. The screw in my gun is approximately flush with the top of the plastic filler.

further investigation
here are the pics....
the screw is not the problem.
if I am saying this correctly.... the face, front or head of the bolt spins out of line when you retract the bolt and then that little screw top is the block since the bolt face is spun somewhat sideways.
should the front of the bolt spin that freely?
it is my opinion... the front of the bolt spins too freely. It does not line up with the extractor slots and then its hard to open. No wonder its in such great condition. I can rotate it to line up to go into battery.... but scratching my head on what it could be.

The front of the bolt does spin freely. At least it does on my gun. The breech area of your rifle is different than mine. Or at least it seems to be. I don’t see the plastic filler in your rifle that I see in mine. Remington must have made different versions of the 580.

Mike, I wasn’t too clear on this. Yes, the front of the bolt will rotate freely when the bolt is out of the gun. In my rifle, when the bolt is installed in the rifle, the front of the bolt is aligned and retained in position by the ejector. Maybe we’re discussing two different issues here?

I think you are missing the loading tray which has the ejector tab molded into it. The screw still in the rifle is what holds it in.
Read this and it may help explain it.

this is not my piece.... it was bought in an auction.
thanks for the info. I agree something is missing and the bolt just turns and will not line up with the extractor notches.
I will relay info for him to fix....
It makes sense that a part is missing to guide the bolt square into battery.
thanks again
