Help from the pros

Hey all I have always since the late 7Os be a hand gun guy. I do own a shotgun. But now maybe looking to branch out into a defense rifle. I know this isn't the time to be buying . But just some advice please. Also at this point I am on tight budget

If money is really tight and you want/need a PCC for home defense I’d look for a HiPoint carbine. They come in 9mm, 45acp, 40 S&W, and I believe now in 10mm.
Under $300 if you can find one.
Yes they are ugly as a mud fence, all accounts I’ve seen say they are dependable.
Plus a no questions lifetime warranty.
Forgot to add, the only drawback is the 10 round mag capacity. Redball makes a 20 round mag but its uglier than the gun.

What handgun calibers do you own? Given the current ammo situation, you might do well to get a pistol caliber carbine or, if your a revolver guy, a lever action. Don't sell a good lever gun short as a defensive weapon.

I'll second all of that. My 45 has shot everything I've fed it with zero problems - and that includes lead reloads.

An AR in 9mm makes a good defensive rifle. Palmetto State Armory makes a good one that won't break the bank and additional uppers in 40 and 45 are available.

Also the Keltec SUB 2000 is fairly inexpensive, reliable and available that use a variety of magazines that interchange with your handguns.

A real pain to disassemble from what I seen in youtube vids. Also heavier than my Mini 14 and I think an ordinary AR? Not sure about my LMT without looking it up. In a pistol caliber?

I'll second the lever action suggestions. Also budget ARs are pretty decent nowadays.

The Sub2000 is a reliable, simple weapon that has a great party trick. It folds in half for easy storage.

I had a Glock-mag version in .40 that wouldn’t win any beauty contests, but went ‘bang’ every time. It fit in a briefcase or laptop bag and deployed rapidly, and I traded it for something shiny.

Let me throw in another vote for lever actions. A 9mm in a PCC approaches .357 magnum power. A .357 in a lever action approaches a .30-30 in power. Recoil is light; accuracy is good; you don't get a facefull of gas from it being a blowback. Not nearly as fast to reload, but you can reload one while it has a round in the chamber. You learn to stay topped off.

I have a 1x4 Leupold on mine. You'd be stunned to see what you can see with that scope at night.

Even Jeff Cooper recommended them for politically unfriendly areas.

Yes. I have had a Marlin 1894 CSBL (.357) on order since April - my timing was awful. It can take a red dot, and with a replacement fore end can take a good sling and light (Surefire 3 cell of course). It solves most ballistic issues that are likely to come up and as far as I know could hunt deer with it. As a pure fighting arm, a quality AR is of course better - but fully equipped is roughly 3 times the cost. (And I have two, one of which is not set up.)

I have a (Wilosn) 9mm AR that takes Glock magazines. It fits a niche similar to that of the 357 lever gun, but for a lot more money and without the flexibility for travel into less tolerant areas. In the grand scheme, it was not a smart purchase - the bang for the buck is not there.
