Default Show Us Your Sniper/Counter Sniper Rifles, I'll Start

FN Special Police Rifle (SPR) in 308. Heavy, free floated barrel, Aluma-glass bedded receiver, 1/12" twist w/target crown. Leupold Mark 4 scope, 4.5-14x40 LR/T w/Mark 4 rings. In the original government contract FN used machinegun barrels, from their M-240, but the FBI determined that the accuracy was inadequate so they produced a proprietary barrel that is very accurate.

I know S&W people have these types of rifles so let's see em.

I actually have three

One for roughly 200 yards or less is a integrally suppressed 300 Black Ops. 1/2 MOA with the match ammo and it is about as loud as a staple gun. This is based around a Savage Model 12 receiver and accepts standard AAR15/M16 magazines

There is my Remington 700PSS in .308 purchased in 1994 and equipped with a Redfield LE-12 scope. Unfortunately I do not have a photo of that one. It is sub MOA with the 172 grain match ammunition

Then there is the long range bolt action which has a lapped, select match grade Lothar Walther barrel chambered in 50 BMG. This is sub 1/2 MOA rifle with the proper ammunition

Shot in vintage sniper matches for a while with this 1918 Swedish m41/B. 1942 Ajack scope on it. There's an 8" plate at the 600 yard mark at The Henry County Gun Club in Tennessee that knows my rifle well.

Default I have one that fits that description.

How about an Accuracy international in 243 Winchester with a Schmidt and Bender 5X25 police marksman Mk II. Badger rings and an Atlas bipod. Runs like a charm.

Running 115 grain Sierra D-Tacs on top of 46 grains of H-1000 I can ring the six inch gong at a thousand yards all day long.

I had an early Rem 700 PSP in 308, that liked 173 to 190 grain Match ammo it was about a 1/4 MOA. My oldest son has a 1990's PSP that likes 168 to 175 Federal Match, he bought it off the Ohio Highway Patrol when they reduced Rapid Response Teams to just one.

After I bought a Savage 10 BAS and got the scope zeroed, I was shooting 20 shot groups that started .0 and sometimes .00. I sold the Remington as soon as someone would cough up 2 grand! (I traded for a Shiloh Sharpe's 1874 in 45-70 with lots of bells and whistles!) After my good experience with the 10 BAS I found a 110 BA in 338 Lapua. (That took 8 months) I shoot only hand loads to keep costs down to less than $4 a round with Virgin brass and about $2 for reloads. At 94 grains of H-1000 or 104 grains of US869 and 300 grain Matchkings, I get 2800 & 2900 fps respectively and 1/4 & 1/2 MOA at 200 to 1000 yards (respectively)

The aluminum chaises BA series has been discontinued for the BA Stealth & BA Stealth Evolution series But these MSRP at what mine did 12 to 15 years ago

There are better and much more expensive rifles, but why bother!

The only way you can find quality 308 ammo currently is through a SWAT team, buy older match ammo at a gun show, or load your own. My 308 BAS really likes Hornady 168 A-Max TAP Precision (LE only Ammo) I put 500 away for a rainy day and load Sierra 155 Palma Matchkings at 2900 fps and get less than 1/2 MOA on a bad day and almost zero MOA on good days! I use Lapua Match brass after the Hornady Match brass wore out! There is a big difference in the two; Lapua is worth the extra $$$!

On 338 ammo, there is no such thing a inexpensive! however There is junk! I bought 4 boxes of "Bitterroot Arsenal" That had PPU headstamp and 300 gr Sierra Matchkings. It shot no better tan 4 MOA at 100yards! (Sometimes some friends were getting 6 MOA) That is horrible in anyone's book!

I highly recommend Redding's Bushing Competition die set (now around $410; they were about $280 when I bought mine. The 308 set is now $360) plus you'll need a good shell holder and bushings. But what a difference they make!

Scopes, don't spend all that money on a rifle and ammo only to waste the capabilities with an "Affordable" scope! and spend the extra cash for the 56mm objective lens over the 50mm, there is 17% more glass to gather light on those far shots! Especially if your targets are in the shadows!!!

Since 338 Lapua was a "new to me" cartridge, I bought everything within 8-10 weeks. That was 12 years ago and ran $5700. I bought the best I could afford (or a little more that I could afford!) and all these years later I still have not had to upgrade a single thing!

I was having a very good day, the planets aligned properly! Lol....
Haven’t had a group that good since.

Have not really tried to “stretch its legs”.....

I really like this rifle.

There are some fine rifles in this thread....

I don't know it's a "sniper rifle", but I guess it could be...

It's a Bergara chassis rifle in 6.5 CM with a 4x16 Vortex FFP scope. Shoots about 1.2 inch 5 shot groups at 300 meters with cheap S&B 140 grain FMJBT ammo, and a solid 1 inch at 300 meters with my handload using H4350 powder and SMK 140's.

I have a number of scoped, accurate bolt action rifles, but only two that were intended as snipers.

A Remington 03-A4 rebuilt for Korea:

... and a Steyr SSG, topped with a Leupold MK4.

A photo of the other side of an 03-A4 shows how the markings are different from an 03-A3...

my deer gun was a rifle originally purchased by a state patrol sniper to be a replacement for his current rifle.. but the different safety location made it difficult for him to transition to it.. he only put 2 boxes of shells thru it before throwing in the towel.. I just slapped on an old leupold scope and hunt with it... Savage 308 16FHVSS... apparently a Cabelas exclusive.. 24 inch heavy fluted barrel in the weather warrior line... probably overkill for hunting.. but I really do not like tracking... so it works for me

Not sure what constitutes a sniper/counter-sniper rifle, unless the criteria is to shoot long range from concealment from a fixed position.

If that counts, here are mine.
1- M1A Loaded, .308, with Millett 6-24x58mm scope on a Fulton DMR mount. Can shoot under 2 MOA at 600 yards, never tried any further.
2- Custom AR 6.5 Grendel Geissele HSNM DMR trigger and many other precision parts, Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24 x50 on a 20 MOA Warne mount.
It's good for 1-1/2 MOA at 1100 yards.

Still a work in progress. Stumbled across this standard Springfield M1A at a very good price. Sent it back to Springfield for the National Match conversion package. Added a few goodies and come spring I'll be experimenting with loads. So far it looks very promising.

Not a precision or "sniper" rifle by any definition but I think it's perfect. Very compact and lightweight (means more ammo can be packed). Very rugged, Very accurate (1/2" at 100 yards more than once). Light recoil. In a caliber that can be scrounged.

Never understood why sniper rifles must be awkward, heavy with bull barrels.

I have this Howa 1500 HB that I mess around with. Our range is only 200 yds so the fun is limited. Specs .223 Rem/4-12 Lou/B&C stock. I can generally shoot it 1 MOA. I wouldn't want to lug this thing hunting.

Not specifically a sniper/counter-sniper rifle. 03 Springfield Mk1 action, double set triggers, .270 Win straight taper 26" target style barrel.

I do not expect to do much sniping. But I enjoy quality time at the 100 yard rifle range at my club.

Armalite with a .223 Wylde chamber will shoot 1 MOA and better all day long with factory loaded

RPR 6.5CM w/NF glass, crazy accurate, .25 MOA.
First target is .31 MOA with factory Hornady ammo, second target shows my reload development .25 MOA less the flyer.

The weight of some of these rifles have been mentioned. You have to be one tough guy to carry my SPR around the woods and mountains. That's not me these days, but the mass and Harris bipod will help with the recoil when you finally settle down for a shot. Ronnie Barrett's M-82 is an arm load.

Back in the late 80s I traded 3 Colt AR15s for a French FRF2 "sniper rifle." I was told that my rifle was one of 20 imported into the USA for testing by the USMC. The rifle was made by GIAT Industries (French Government) and came equipped with a thermal shield barrel shroud and a Kahles long range scope.

I wrote to GIAT to obtain a owner's manual but all they sent me was brochure for a tank and some light armored vehicles. I did not want to need an unobtainable part for this rifle at some point in the future to prevent this from becoming a $7,000 door stop. I traded the FRF2 for a Remington 700 LTR, 700 PSS and a H&K SL8 (G36 clone). I was more accurate with both of the Remington 700 rifles than I had been with the FRF2.

Pictures of the FRF2 are available on-line but I don't have any of my rifle.

I also have a Remington 700 VLS in .308 that looks just like this.

It is sub MOA with good ammo.

Been a long while since I used it, but it sure was effective at "smoking" them out.

This fearless soldier had been VC, then one day a chopper caught and killed his whole patrol, so decided he was on the wrong side, and came over. This happened a lot, switching sides. He had a wife in our compound. He is the chap on the left with the XM 203, with a silencer and grenade launcher. They are my body guards, and often went out just by themselves at night, looking for VC tax collectors. Would bring back "evidence" of their success. The next lower one is a close up of him and his weathered M16. No one else had the 30m round mags, I certainly had only the 20 round mags. Sometimes he had his silencer on, sometimes not. I wonder what happened to him, when the South Vietnamese captured a turncoat, the turncoat would always "make a break for it", with a predictable outcome.

All the best, and stay safe. SF VET

Great pics. Chu hoi cuts both ways. Here is one of theirs. My hooch maid, Rose made the addition. There was an ARVN basic training camp just North of Tay Ninh and the whole bunch deserted, weapons and all.

Willy Pete can counter a sniper.

These are the only sniper rifles I possess. Most of you will recognize the first as an M1903A4 from WWII. The second is a Russian Model 1891/30PU from the same era.

I do have some other more modern bolt-action centerfire rifles that I call my "flea flickers" for their ability to flick a flea off a dog's behind at some distance. However I do not call them "sniper rifles" for concern that such an appellation will cause them to be banned from possession or taxed into oblivion sometime in the next four years. I trust that my 1903A4 and 1891/30PU rifles will survive such condemnation inasmuch as they are almost as old as I am and should therefore rightfully be designated as antiques.
