of a gallon of Coleman fuel. This morning, while perusing a local forum, I ran across a Savage 340 in .222 Remington for $675.00. Not a NIB example either, cosmetically it was 75%-80% at best. I am a fan of this series of rifles and have owned several but have never found one worth that kind of money.

The only CF or RF ammo my Walmart has is about a half dozen boxes of 222.
Colman fuel is ~$7/gallon, IIRC.
Years ago I had a Savage 340 chambered in 22 Hornet, and like a fool I sold it. It was my first rifle, other than 22 rimfires. It was a very good rifle to use in areas where you didn't want to make a lot of noise but you needed some power. Like for hunting coyotes in the woods behind a farm house.

Over the years I have owned 8 340 Savage rifles, one in 30-30 that shot pretty well (I think the Remington ammo was inconsistent) and 7 in 22 Hornet. The Hornets shot from very well to outstanding! Consider what you get new for $675 and If the 340 has a test target, it just might be worth it. But I would rather pay $175 like I did for my first one!

I had a Anschutz 54 with a stainless bull barrel and beautiful wood, it is one of five in the country and was made to display at the SHOT show and NRA convention. My 340's way outshoot that rifle!

I first examined a Savage 340 in 1963, at Davis Hardware, in Austin, Texas. It was chambered in .30-30, and was priced at 125 dollars. It was a basic bolt action, and I would NEVER pay 675.00 for one no matter what condition it was in.

A year ago I brought home a 340 in 225 Winchester for $189.00 .
Guess nobody wanted to tackle this oddball .
I have had a couple of Hornets in and about the same price over the years but somebody always talks me outta them.
I never thought of them as being special but I'm not seeing them around much anymore . Better keep the next one.
