Default CZ To Buy Colt?

Talk on the interweb is that CZ has made an offer to purchase Colt. If true, might be the best thing to happen to Colt in a long time. Be nice to see them owned by a real guns company rather than an investing / holding company.

Indeed, that could be good news for Colt. Probably better than being sold piecemeal like Remington, although Marlin sure landed in a good place with Ruger.

Czech Republic makes the best beer and has some of the cutest girls in the world. Makes some outstanding guns-

Colt management has been awful for 20 years at least. I want Colts made in America by Americans and owned by Americans.

But if its got to be- maybe CZ ownership won't be so bad..

I'm hoping.

It’s little known, but Waterford Crystal is owned by a Czech company and most of their products are made in the Czech Republic, not Ireland. The Waterford, Ireland factory is small and makes small special orders. As others said, being owned by CZ could be Colt’s rebirth and long term viability. It worked for Waterford. But, it’s just a rumor, right?

This would be good for Colt and get them off of the merry-go-round of going bankrupt every few years. It could also be a catalyst to get out of CT and get out of the union contract that ties them down.

I keep reading that people think Marlin being acquired by Ruger is a good think. I disagree. As much as I like some Rugers, their quality control has not been very good for quite some time. I am NOT looking forward to see what their version of Marlin looks like!!

Exclamation Pony Race?

I think I would rather see Uberti own Colt. They know Six-Shooter and more.

I have always been impressed with CZ's line of rifles and handguns - good solid built walnut and steel. And they have done right by the Dan Wesson 1911's.

I LOVE Colts - always have. That said, they have always been in financial straits since I've been collecting and - - a poorly run Company too. I wish they were being bought by an American Company instead - but at least CZ seems to know how to run a gun Company better than Colt. I own a CZ long gun and it's a very high quality rifle!

It's my opinion that since the 1970's Colt has been run my a bunch of "pencil pushers" and not "gun people". Since they lost most of their Military contracts, they are and have been in sad financial shape.

I have had no real complaints with Colt's quality, workmanship or customer service and have actually been quite pleased over the last 40 years. I just wish they had a better idea on what to produce and when. They are always cash strapped and can not take advantage of current trends or come up with new designs for the 21st century. They always seem to miss the boat!

If this does go through I would hope to see improvements Company wide! I do hope they at least keep a small tiny office in CT so they can legally keep the address on the barrel - I also hope their manufacturing gets the hell out of the Northeast so they don't get sued out of business - at least if that is doable.

I am no Ruger fan - do not own any at all That said, Ruger's quality was lacking for many years but as of lately I have seen steady improvement. Still not a Ruger fan but no one could do worse than Remington did to them!

Uberti, CZ, whatever....any real gun company is better than Colt’s management. Would be nice to see someone put that brand equity to effective use. Also, there are many better states in which to manufacturer than Connecticut. I’m Connecticut born and raised and I love the history of the state, but it’s done nothing but piss on and piss away its bread and butter.

To the OP, thanks for sharing this as I had not heard anything about this! Like another post, I'm curious about what this would mean for the Dan Wesson brand of 1911's that CZ already owns. Does this mean they will have two brands of 1911 under one roof? Is it the end of Dan Wesson and they move those 1911 models under the name of Colt? What about the revolver line up that has just been revitalized? I don't care much about Colts on again off again relationship with the AR15 as much as I do their pistols and revolvers.

Also didn't CZ and Colt collaborate on a .40 Cal pistol back in the day? It was kind of like the early prototype to the unreleased DWX that many of us have been waiting for since last shot show!

That's the best that could be hoped for under the circumstances. When you persist with a business model after the world around you changes, you insist on remaining in a HIGH cost area to manufacture that also is filled with politicians bent on destroying your business, and you question why you're doing poorly financially you either go out of business or are bought out. The latter is a better option IMHO.

Love my old Colt's but let's face it. If Colt made cars and innovated the way they have for the last 50 years, they would be selling a 50's vintage all steel land barge that somebody else designed, but with an Etch-a-Sketch screwed down to the dashboard.

If someone ever writes another book about the history for Colt during that same period, it will begin with chapter 11.

If the rumor is true, I really don't see how it could hurt.

Yet somehow, your posting on a site dedicated to Smith & Wesson, Springfield MA, which is having a record profitable year while manufacturing in "enemy territory". Colt's ownership is more likely the cause of failure.

I have no issues with Dan Wesson under CZ (specifically the 1911s). I might think Colt could improve.

Hhhmmm, might have to buy me one of those ColtZ.

So the company started by the grandson of Daniel B., and Colt under the same ownership.....

The Czech Republic, along with other former eastern Block countries are embracing freedom more than the other Western European Countries.
CZ's makes great guns and their buying Colt would be a good thing.
Get Colt out of Connecticut.
Unleash Colt and let them sell the great guns they can make.

Colt is sitting on a gold mine- the venerable Colt SAA, everyone they make is sold before it goes out the door or soon after and at a premium.

They did not care though and slowed production of them down to a trickle and laid off skilled staff that knew how to make high quality SAA's. According to reports and what I was told- not sure if its factual.

They did not want to make money I guess- hard to figure Colt management out.

They also don't sell 1911's in California another bad move biz wise.

Some good questions. Maybe market DW 1911's as an up market brand, while the Colt 1911 brand stays more mainstream? But then, the name "Colt" is already considered by many to be an upscale name, so who knows?

Another consideration CZ might be considering is it gives them a foot hold in the revolver market, a market they might feel will grow in the USA with looming semi-auto and mag capacity bans possible in the near future?

We'll see I guess.

That would probably be a good thing. CZ knows about modern manufacturing and how to operate a viable business. They could bring all kinds of improvements to Colt, including a more customer and quality oriented mindset.

Colt has been their own worst enemy for a looooooooong time now. Many bad business decisions! There TRYING to regain some of their luster with the new rendition of the Python and the Cobra, (which actually is more of a Detective Special) The older real Cobras were lightweight. The new one is just a name rip off because it sounds so cool.

CZ is a serious gun company. That might be a very wise move!

I was quite pleased to see this yesterday, also. CZ's had slow, but steady and increasing success here. I really think they could take take Colt to new levels.

Would being foreign owned somehow protect them from the onslaught of lawsuits against gun manufacturers that will begin very soon?

I'm surprised that CZ-USA hasn't been mentioned yet.

Based in Kansas (IIRC), they do some manufacturing there and I'm sure that could be expanded.

I bought my 452 Trainer when they being closed out, as the 453s were being introduced.

Cost was the main inducement ($312 OTD), along with the many glowing reports from owners in the RFC CZ sub-forum.

The quality and amazing accuracy became apparent with the first range trip.

No qualms from me if CZ does buy Colt and keeps it all in the USA.

Definitely. I remember buying CZ 75's from "Richard the German" out of a transit chest, many as you want for $199. Last time I priced a new one it was $599 or $649. Joe

Colt has trundled subpar products with premium prices out the door for years. I don't see anything other than vast improvements if CZ acquires Colt. The remaining solely Colt inventory might be more valuable to collectors and might be less valuable to people wanting quality.

Come to Shiner Texas and drink a Shiner Bock, and also check out the women. You do not have to go all the way to the Czech Republic to find good Czech/Bohemian Beer and Women.

Off topic but does anyone know if CZ discontinued the Dan wesson 715 they were producing?

Edit - Nevermind, google search provided an answer. They did

If the new ownership is able to break the grip of the union the prices might be more reasonable.
Not all unions are evil but the Colt deal has ruined their price structure for years.

Shiner beer is good stuff no doubt, I gave a case of it to some Lao/Thai lady chefs in a local restaurant- it disappeared in record time . They wanted more "Cowboy Beer" lol

Pilsner Urqell is my favorite CZ Republic beer..

I dont think this can be a bad thing.

Best bet is to move the company South or West.

I know many folks here a sympathetic to unions, but remember they (UAW) strangled/held Colt hostage for years starting in 1986.

I would also agree they have been mismanaged for years. Couple that with continually being pillaged by private equity firms that infuse cash just to suck it back out and then some, Colt is struggling.

Colt can definitely benefit from CZs prolific research and development. I mean, CZ had their design adopted by the Czech Republic as the primary long arm.

I think this is win/win, or at the very least a major improvement for both companies. I own a CZ Z40B, so I can attest that when these two companies come together, awesome products are the result.

Sorry, couldn't tell. If Remington had produced any Para pistols, they would have screwed it up!

Come to Shiner Texas and drink a Shiner Bock, and also check out the women. You do not have to go all the way to the Czech Republic to find good Czech/Bohemian Beer and Women.
I had Shiner Bock beer at a bar over in Hanover, PA but that didn't help me in the other department.

Like others posting here (and around the internet), I think this is a good thing.

CZ is a very solid company. They've remained a very viable pistol manufacturer, and that's without the benefits of a big US military (Beretta, Sig) contract, or heavy US police (Glock) contracts. They've done so by establishing a reputation among shooters, and following their suggestions.

I don't know what this means for Dan Wesson. I suspect they will make it all work.

I wonder if we'll see a resurgence in the future with smaller calibers, such as a new 1903 or similar. I know there was a small run, but CZ might try to kickstart it again.
Perhaps CZ brand for DA/SA, Colt brand for SAO and revolvers.

So, a "Rem-Lin" may be more desirable than a "Rug-Lin"?

If the CZ Colt is on par with their Dan Wesson 1911's I am on board, who knows maybe they will just re-label the Dan Wesson's.

Tell you guys what, if I win the powerball or megamillions, I'll buy Colt and DO IT RIGHT.
I will also bring back the old BJ40 Landcruiser and the Parker side by side steel shot safe shotgun.
So say a prayer for me

"If true, might be the best thing to happen to Colt in a long time."

Indeed! CZ will bring capital, which Colt hasn't had for years.

The Remington 51 pistol was made by Para. How'd that work out for you?
