As Crocodile Dundee would say, "Now that's a knife!" Altho my tastes lean toward penknives and small pocket folders, that is a beautiful blade. Lovely shotgun, as well.

I have to agree, I much prefer a small case knife under 7" but I do enjoy making Bowie's every once in a while.

I did not know you had MADE that knife! Now I can really appreciate it. As to my 'druthers', I'll always have my grandfather's penknives: they're stored in my safe. Not for sale: one has an ivory handle and another's is pearl. 2 others, one a Remington, if that means anything. All have to be over a century old. Mean the world to me.

I like big knives and I cannot lie...

Sir Knivesalot said that, I think.

(some of you might get that joke)

"Ned Kelly Toothpick" semi custom by Svord of New Zealand. It too is a "bigun". With a 1932 H&R Model 199 Sportsman Single Action.

Thank you. I love old knives. I used to frequent the flea market looking for knives I could refurbish. Here is one I did more than a few years ago. It was rusted up and didn't have any scales. I kept the patina and tried to keep the character.

opaul, that Bowie's a beauty and I, too, didn't realize at first you're the make -- that's even more impressive.

Hobby or profession?

Itís a retirement hobby. I was interested in knife making back in the late 70ís but never pursued it until after retirement.
Thanks!

Most Bowies do not appeal to me, but yours is quite handsome. I particularly like the way you avoided the upturned point. The first knives you posted here several years ago were very attractive to me, but somewhat rough-hewn compared to your more recent ones, which are much more refined.

Is that a convex grind, or flat? What steel?

Thank you. I keep a photo log and itís fun to go back and see the progression of knives. It took me quit a while before I even considered through tang/hidden tang knives. And even longer before I attempted my first Bowie.
This is a flat grind 8.5Ē 1075 carbon steel blade. Fit and finish and trying to make a better knife each time is my philosophy.

It weighs in at 14 ounces with the balance point at the guard.
Thank you!

Really nice work on the Bowie, I have an affinity for good quality Bowieís and collected them for several years. I also share your fondness for older knives, and have my share of those also.
I always enjoy seeing the knives you make, as noted your knives have become more refined as your skill sets grew with experience.
Always work in progress.
I like the composition of the photo as well, I am an old bird hunter who always appreciates a good sxs shotgun.

Great Bowie, opaul! Love the stag handle. Am I correct assuming it is Sambar Stag? Seems like when I see "Bowie" knives online, many times they are made by a guy named Gil something. I forget his last name. I am not sure if he mass produces them, but he has some funky looking big knives.

Larry...
Gil Hibben. A knife designer but they are mass produced. Made some for the Rambo movies

He also made some smaller, less fantasy knives like this one.

I like your Bowie very much. I also would have guessed Sambar stag. Did you treat the elk antler to achieve that look?

I didn't do anything to the antler except wax it. I'm always on the look out for nice pieces of stag. I frequent pet stores, believe it or not, and sometimes find a piece that is perfect but usually I leave empty handed.

You might look in feed mills. Around here they have antler dog chews. Also some Garden Centers.
