A good American should have a .45-70 somewhere about the home.
Maybe not with that buttplate though.

I agree. I have a Winchester 1886 made by Miroku and it is also very nicely done.

Beautiful! I also have two Miroku Winchesters: an 1886 Extra Light .45-70, and an 1892 Deluxe in .357. Both are outstanding in quality and in use.

Shark Bait your 1885 is beautiful!
My Miroku Winchester isn't an 1885, but an 1873 Tapper in 45 Colt, with a 16” octagonal barrel; all metal is CCH and the stock is curly maple. I am very impressed with the craftsmanship and function. Only 300 made, this is 157.

That butt plate is fine , if you realize how to use it . DON'T crowd it into your chest past the joint of your arm and the shoulder joint . Move it out , just past the place where your arm and shoulder come together . Play with it a bit , in and out , up and down and you will find " the spot " where it fits right . Regards Paul

Thanks Paul. I am familiar with the correct way to use it. Learned it the hard way.

I have a Miroku made Winchester 1885 in 38-55, with the same tang sight. I added a Lyman #17M globe front sight, and have a riot with it! The sight elevations are held with friction against an internal O-ring. If you want a Marble's or Lyman style with "clicks" (spring powered detents), Montana Vintage Arms make high quality repos, but the price is up there!
I had a Browning 92 in 44 by them and it was great too. I 1987 I bought a Browning 1886 45-70 rifle, (the carbine was a year or two later. The actions are so slick, with good ammo you will amaze yourself! I used mine in a "Speed Rifle" match: Offhand at unknown distance (usually short) 10 shots for time, a miss costs 5 seconds! The one I remember was 105 yards (longest I've ever been in), my 10 shots were in 3.28 seconds, but wat surprised me was being the first competitor The white steel gong was clean and I could see my group, 1.25"!

You did well there!
I have two of those Miroku High Walls. Neither one of them is going anywhere soon.

I have an 1885 Win/Miroku Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (BPCR) with a shotgun butt and half octagon barrel. Chambering is 50/90 Sharps. It also has mounted a globe front sight and vernier tang sight from Montana Vintage Arms. They only made about 125 of them some years back. Beautifully made rifle and a heck of a shooter. It will smack the dickens out of a steel plate at 800 yds and it will put down an elk with real authority. Yours looks like a really fine example. I’d bet you’re gonna like it a lot.

Thanks everyone. Please post pictures of yours if you like. I'd love to see them.
I learned some more about this rifle after I got it home. The barrel is free floated, the trigger pull is adjustable, and you can set the casing ejection to either right, left or to keep it from ejecting to the ground.

I bought a new 1885 Traditional Hunter in .38-55 about twenty-five years ago, not long after they were announced. That purchase was followed years later by another in .32-40 and one more in .405 Winchester, though the .405 is not the Traditional Hunter version. These are all great cast bullet shooters.

Single shot rifles are fun to shoot and you have a great looking gun. Great caliber and fantastic wood. Enjoy your find, show us some targets from the range. Larry

I have a couple of those Miroku High Walls.
And I also have a Miroku Low Wall in .22 rimfire, and a Uberti Low Wall in 32 WCF. All great guns.
More recently I acquired an original New Haven Connecticut made Winchester in 40-70 Straight Sharps, dates to 1887. The bore is rough and accuracy is poor. I may get it sleeved. But still a cool gun.

Beware. That .45-70 1885 with a narrow crescent buttplate is deadly on both ends. I have an 1885 in .30-06 with a conventional stock. I ran into a guy at the range with a .45-70 just like the OP's and we naturally got to talking and traded rifles to shoot. I lasted one round. These Browning 1885's are made exquisitely well, far better than original Winchesters. They were always priced kinda high and never achieved the popularity of Rugers. There was a time when the earlier B-78 or an 1885 could be bought fairly cheaply. Most hunters likely wanted a magazine rifle, but my Daddy sagely told me years ago that you only get one shot. So true.

You are really kind of comparing Apples to Oranges.

To say that the Miroku guns are far better than the original guns. You are comparing a new production gun with better steel certainly, and better machining as well. But you are also comparing it to nineteenth century guns that were pretty much hand made one at a time. There are different ways to look at it.

Congrats OP, that’s a beautiful life! Just got me a 45-70. It’s not a high wall, but a Marlin JM 1895G Guide Gun. Looking forward to loading for it.
