Default Browning Hi-Power input request

Picked up a new Browning Hi-Power a few months before
they dropped production.

Trigger was so horrendous at about eight lbs. I couldn't
even shoot it.

Slide spring so heavy my other half couldn't even "rack" it.

I'm dialed muscle memory of "clean" light triggers for
decades in everything I own.

Well...took over a year getting it off to Cylinder & Slide
and getting it back.

Lighter spring and a clean and crisp 3 ib. trigger break,
really outstanding now.

Anyway, I'd like to dress it up with some eye catching
grips. Not finding much of a selection out there...any suggestions?

Check a well know on line auction site, lots of BHP grips including Spegel's (pricey a bit but worth it).

Sambar stag ought to be available if you search for a while. Elk would be easier to find, although not as nice, IMHO. Or, find someone who makes/sells giraffe bone. One of our members posted a rally nice pic of giraffe bone grips recently.

I don't own a set, but love the looks of the Craig Spegel grips. I picked up a hard to find set of Navridex grips for mine. They are hard to find and look very similar to the Spegel's. I didn't care for them as much.

When I got my Hi Power one year ago Feb. 14th, it had VZ thin grips. If you find that factory grips are a bit bulky, you will like the VZ grips. They make different colors.

Ultimately, I went with a set of Hogue finger groove grips. I've not always liked the Hogues, but it depends on the gun I suppose. Love them on the Hi Power.

On another note, a friend of a friend just traded a $300 9mm pistol to a guy for a Belgian Hi Power with adjustable sights because the guy wanted "a more modern pistol". Some guys have all the luck!

I like Spegel grips quite a bit, I've owned two sets over the years. I would advise finding a ready made set for sale somewhere, I've been on his waiting list for over two years for another set. I called him after the first year to make sure I was still on the list, and he said I was, so I haven't bothered him again. If it's meant to be, it will happen. I'm a patient man.

For really beautiful and comfortable grips check out the Masterpiece grips at BHSpringSolutions website. Not inexpensive but gorgeous and well shaped for my hand. I have a pair on my EDC Hi-Power, which is also tricked out with other components from BHSS. The main upgrade is the SFS system.

You are unlikely to find folks who are involved with the BHP platform more than the gentlemen at BHSS.

I have multiple HPs and two have Spegels. I have nothing bad to say about them. Nothing.

However, the two I carry both have Navidrex thin black micarta. Nothing feels better to me than these. Basically they look like black Spegels but a touch thinner IMO.

Brownells has them in stock in black micarta for $52 and rosewood for $56.

Thank you all for the input.

Did speak to Mr. Spegel yesterday, he is many months
out on delivering Hi-Power grips.

We have two members making Elk Ivory stocks. Big Mountain Man and The Executioner. Both do an excellent job and not all that expensive.

Ditto. His thin grips. In ebony. You will be glad you did.

The other issue of course is "was C&S able to produce a gun that holds the 9-ring or better at 25 yards?"

I have 3 or 4 sets of stag from Executioner for Rugers and an N frame. So, no HP, but I can vouch for his work on what I have. Excellent work and reasonable pricing.

Check out Lok grips. Lots of colors and textures. Mine are ridgebacks. Thinner than stock and not too aggressive.

Get on the Spegel waiting list! That said, the VZ grips are cool looking, fairly thin, and come in several textures/colors. The Hogue grips look real nice, but are too thick for my taste. Navidrex is a good option as well (the alloy Hi Power on the left is wearing a set). And if you're into the really vintage look, then don't forget about the wrap around Pachmayrs!

Here is a set of checkered rosewood on mine. Not sure who made them or where I got them, so not much help but at least something for you to consider.

My Mk III has Hogue wood grips on it and they feel and look great. Spegals are suppose to be the best and they are kinda pricey as you have found.

I expect it rather depends upon the size & shape of your hand. I just got a gun show set of factory wood and adjusted them with a rasp until they fit my hands. Stained walnut and refinished with polyurethane. The rectangular panels on the sides are long gone, but boy do they fit. The thin BHP stocks fit my hand like galoshes on a fish.

There's a site, I think called Grips by Esmeralda, that has some stunning wood. Not sure how it fits the hand.

Guess it depends on your personal eye catching look.
VZ Gunner grips and the thin Navidrex for me. The thins feel great but are more functional than lookers.

Might also call Robin at Herretts. I recall they have some sharp looking wood grips. Just behind Craig Siegel in my opinion.

There are also some really gaudy Turkish made HP grips out there. Inlaids of mother of Pearl covered with gobs of varnish. I have been tempted to but a $25 set in case I need to go to a costume party as a Saddam-like Middle East Dictator.

One final caution. Make sure the grips are thin enough to grip comfortably. On set of FAT stag grips tried on a commander of mine made it feel as clunky as a mossberg.

Years ago I bought a pair of Aherend's grips for my HP. Though he's been out of business for a couple of years now, you may still be able to find some used.

Navridex, black micarta not the palm swell versions, are my first choice followed by the Uncle Mikes rubber grips which were molded off the Craig Spegel profile. When I want a BBQ gun, I can pop on some faux ivory.

Neither will make grips for the Browning..... I've talked to both over the past 3-4 years.. BMM just last month.

I've got a set of Spegel HP grips that he made out of "something other than wood" for the FBI HRT's custom Novak (?) HPs back in the 80s (mine were overruns) they are great ...... but Hogue's are "good" and come without a 2+ year wait.

Default I'm not sure

That my hp would be improved by new grips. Maybe a nice leather full flap holster would do it.

Craig charges no more for his grips than what you'll pay for most other high-quality aftermarket grips. The problem is people who buy them and then re-sell them to folks who don't want to wait in line.

Here's his price list... Craig Spegel - Custom Pistol Grips

Here are three of my High Powers with, from left to right, Herrett's, Hogues, and Spegels. The Spegels are far and away the best fitting, and feeling, of the lot.

Spegel's are so obvious when you see them, no one meets the quality and beauty of his IMO. They do pop up from time to time on various forums for sale.

I just reacquired a 1976 dom Hipower I used to own. It is bone stock, just as it left the factory. I have just finished reading this thread and I am wondering what makes the grips for Hipowers so hard to find?

Not hard to find....... "factory" are all over the place. I bet I've got 7-8 sets for two HPs.

Spegel's are hard to get because he make great revolver "Boot Grips" and HP and 1911 grips and his grips are in great demand ...... one man shop .....2 year backlog on orders.

HP grips are $65 and up..... "black market" multiply that by 2 or 3.

Did the 1976 HP's come in a box or in the black pouch with red lining?

I bought it used in a gun store. It came plain with one magazine, no box or pouch. I purchased several extra magazines.

The dovetail cut that fits inside the front of the frame opening in the mag well is the major issue. When looking for my gun show grips I had to try several factory pairs to get a pair where this cut allowed the grip screw holes to line up correctly. Then there's the fit of the inner ledge at the back of the grip panel that's supposed to fit tightly against the frame.

Apparently that degree of precision is more work than a great many makers are willing to put in, at least here in the US.

Oddly enough, a new pair recently bought from Numrich/GPI dropped right on. When shaped, the wood wasn't of the same grain quality as the older pair. Neither old or new appeared to be any type of "walnut" I'm familiar with.

Spegels are the best, period. I like the full checkered cocobolo or Macassar ebony grips. They sometimes require a little bit of fitting, which is detailed in the flyer he sends with the grips. He just moved to ID so I would imagine his wait time has grown a bit.

The last set of Spegels I saw on the auction sites went for something like $450--lol, I've got a small fortune in his grips!
