Default UPDATE-New (to me) Two Play Pretties

I've always liked the way a 1851 Colt's Navy felt in the hand, but never owned one. Saw a couple of Uberti repops for sale on the SASS site and decided it was time to get one. It was slightly used and came with a Slim Jim holster.

The '51 Navies must be good sidearms. Robert E Lee and Wild Bill Hickok both carried them.

It has been years since I've fired a percussion revolver, though I own several, all .44 caliber. Time to get my hands dirty again, well, after the weather gets a bit better.

Thats a nice looking gun and looks like a fun shooter. I’ve toyed with the idea myself.
Maybe some day soon.
That’s a .36 cal, right?

Yes, it is a .36. It takes .375" round balls or bullets. I bought 100 from an N-SSA member. If it something I want to shoot more, I'll order a round ball mould.

Muley Gil, the Navies are real nice, but I tend to lean towards the '61s! I like the streamlined look!

ETA: the way primers and percussion caps are, make sure that you get a percussion cap tool and a supply of roll caps. Just add the aluminium from a soda can and you have a reliable source of percussion caps!

Nice!

I know a few guys with a screw loose, but it appears you’re missing one completely!

Best get yourself a plunger screw for the loading lever.

Great little guns. I have it's twin brother and love it. If you get tired of black powder you can buy a conversion cylinder to make it an open top revolver that will shoot 38's.

Gil,

I believe you will find the Uberti 36s will respond better to a .380 diameter ball. You want to shave a ring of lead off the ball when you load it.

When you get ready to buy a mold, they come in one , two and six cavity. I recommend you get the six cavity. It is a lot of fun to shoot these!

It was in the box. I didn't notice it was missing until after I took the pictures.

Hey, it came with the factory box. That makes it worth more, right?

MG as soon as you get about 5 more of those you can sign up with the guerrillas up in Missouri.

Those old boys called em a Missouri reload, a few decades before that NY reload.

I've also got a Navy Arms Model 60, brass frame .44, a 1860 .44, a Remington 1863 .44, a 1849 .31 and an .69 single shot with an original Enfield lock. Plus a number of reproduction and original muskets, rifle muskets and a shotgun or two.

Great looking revolvers.

I also want to that you for using the term "Play Prettys", pronounced "Play Purdies".
That brings back memories of my folks use of that term, and brought back found memories of those that have passed on.

Always wanted one of those, but never bit.

They're superbly balanced handguns imo.

Congratulations on your new acquisition.

Thanks for sharing it.

Here's my 1861 Navy 36cal. revolver, bought it sometime in the '70's. Made for Replica Arms by Uberti.
It came with all the paperwork, bullet mold, holster, and matching numbered shoulder stock. I think I paid around $100 for everything in an antique shop. I was pretty cheap back then and that would have been a lot for me.
They sure a lot of fun to shoot, lots of smoke and noise. Pretty accurate too.

Very nice.

I keep thinking I want to pick up a 1851 .38spl conversion, but I never get around to it.

The pair of 1861s in post 10 are also built by Uberti for Replica Arms in Marietta, Ohio. Got them in 71 or 72 from the Log Cabin after Replica Arms was bought by Navy Arms.

Possibly the most accurate c&b revolvers I own.

There are a couple of ways to do this.

First is to buy a conversion cylinder for a c&b revolver. If you go this route, I would recommend you consider one of the cylinders cut for the 41 Colt. The inside lubed bullet in the 41 is several thousandths larger than the bore of the revolver but it easily swages down and is much more accurate that sending .357 bullets down a .375 barrel.

Or, buy one of the factory made 38 S&W Special open top revolvers. They come from the factory with a properly dimensioned bore fore the cartridge.

I have a pair of replica Richards conversions for the modern 44 Colt cartridge with proper .429 bores. Nice shooting revolvers.

Hmmm, I've been shooting guns since I was just bigger than a toddler and have shot all kinds of firearms, but I can't say that I've ever shot a percussion revolver.

That's a nice looking shooting iron Muley Gil.

I have a 58 Remngton replica and a 38 conversion cylinder. Even though the remington is a solid frame, I shoot only cowboy action loads in it. In precussion, I shoot minimun Pyrodex.

Thanks for the advice. BTW, I started casting Minie balls when I was 15, which was almost 52 years ago. And I got my first cap n ball revolver, a Navy Arms Model 60, a brass frame .44, when I was 16.

So you know your way around a percussion cap! Good. My first c&b shooters were a pair of 1861s. Shot them as best as I could in competition until a collector convinced me to part with them. Replaced them with the Ubertis in the post. Spent more on the Ubertis than I paid for the originals!

Those six cavity molds sure make it rain bullets. Almost as fast as I would shoot them down range.

Yeah, I know there are different guns he used, but those type of gun actions will always remind me of when Clint did the coolest reload in hollywood. At the end of Pale Rider, when he faced off against Marshall Stockburn with an empty revolver after killing the deputies. He picks up his hat, squints, replaces the empty cylinder with a loaded one, looks him in the eyes and ends it.
If I had anything similar to it, I'd be cool Clint in my imagination.

Default CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT

We use the .36 and the .44s in CIVIL WAR reenactment.
I ride with TERRY's TEXAS RANGERs CSA . The CAVALRY wore the pistol on the right side reversed in a flapper so they would not fall out when at full gallop. The sword goes on the left so right handers can draw it. The reason you mount a horse from the left side is because the sword is hanging on your left.

FORWARD THE COLORS,

Black powder adds a whole new dimension to my shooting enjoyment. I got a late start, beginning in about 2012. Here are some of my black powder pistols and revolvers...

If I had anything similar to it, I'd be cool Clint in my imagination.

good scene. That was a Remington 58 New Army.

Those were fixed frame receivers as opposed to the Colt's open top of the day, so they were much easier to swap cylinders. With a Colt, you had to take the barrel off.

That brings back memories of my folks use of that term, and brought back found memories of those that have passed on.
My grandma (1902-2004), who was from Ohio, used the term "Play Pretty". That was the first thing I thought of when reading the title of your post.

Well, once I got the 1851, I decided to replace a BP revolver that I sold a number of years ago, so I bought a 1862 Pocket Police.

Not counting the Root revolvers, Colt made basically three frames in their percussion revolver line. The 1849 was the most common revolver sold and was chambered in .31 caliber and was the smallest. Next in size was the 1851 in .36. Colt took the same frame and used a rebated cylinder to create the 1860 Army in .44. The largest frame was the Walker/Dragoon in .44.

Colt decided to build another small frame revolver, but instead of .31, it was built in .36, using the same type of rebated cylinder as the 1860 Army. The streamlined barrel assembly is a downsized 1860 as well.

Think of the 1862 Pocket Police as the Chief's Special/Detective Special of the percussion era.

They are/were built in two barrel lengths-4 1/2" and 5 1/2". I like the looks and feel of the 5 1/2" the best.
