I took my new Cz 512 carbine out for a test drive. I am impressed. I shot about fifty rounds of 2 brands, Armscor and Aguilla, just plinking. Zero malfunctions. Considering it's plastic and aluminum, the fit and finish is good, in a tidy and utilitarian way. It seems to have very well controlled tolerances. Disassembly and assembly was easy with no bad surprises. The polymer clips were unchallenging to load and functioned fine while firing.
In the negative column, I didn't like the feeling of pushing the loaded magazines into the bottom of the receiver with the bolt closed. I quickly developed a preference for holding the bolt back, inserting the clip, and snapping the first round in. It shot well enough with open sight to destroy some clay pigeons and porcelain fragments at ranges out to fifty yard. Misses about on par with my old eyes. Nothing wrong with the sights.
In fact, I particularly like the sights. They worked at 25 and 50, that's not saying a lot, I will have to test at more range.They are windage adjustable. The rear tangent sight is constructed in a solid traditional manner, the lengthwise tangent slide and indent adjustment work perfectly. The whole mechanism is blued steel. It disassembles properly. The pressed (or engraved) yardages numerals are simple, neatly rendered and very readable. The front sight is solid, with a fiber optic insert. The threaded barrel and thread protector offers no surprises.
One other note: the high straight comb is positioned for aiming through en elevated scope. It was difficult and a little uncomfortable to get my eye down in line with the iron sights. The comb doesn't have to be an either or thing, and this one is. I think a compromise would have been better on this feature, since the gun makes a handy little walking plinker/varminter, and an iron sight plinker is a lot of fun. But oh well, scopes are fun too, a 2-7x seems right for this gun.
And the 22 WMR? I love that too. It seems to have a punch about like a 9mm, a decent thump. It was easy enough to unload a 10 round clip into a target rapidly, without a lot of time acquiring. It's an energy dump most living things could not survive. 3000 foot pounds total.
