My first lever action
Been waiting to see if I could swing this for the last 4 or 5 months. I did..... and think it was a grand slam.

Hank not sure on the tang sight.
All I see is pat date.

The bore looked great at the store but I'm about to clean it and can update.

That tang sight should have a very faint company mark of Lyman, Marble's or Winchester (made by Marble's)
All these sights are very similar, and work the same. You will hear (or should hear) clicks as you adjust the elevation.
If you disassemble to clean, be sure you get the spring back in the same direction! I got a Marble's for $5 because "It was Broken", paid for it and stripped it in the store, reversed the spring, assembled and then owned a $75+ sight!
Lyman is marketing current production Tang sight that externally resemble the originals, but are junk and hold the settings with an O-ring (I use it as a fixed sight, set for one known distance and don't adjust!)
Montana Vintage Arms is currently making modern productions of the original tang sights. As good as or better than the old ones, but cost is $225 verses $79 for modern Lyman!

Very nice rifle !!!! My first was a Winchester 1892 skillfully converted to 357 Magnum from 32-20. In the 70s it was my go to LEO long gun to match my S&W snub 357. Unfortunately, it was sold due to a family emergency. I didn't even think to make a photo.

Paul, lever guns can be addicting. I recently bought a Winchester model 64 after owning and hunting with Savage 99s. Congrats on a very nice purchase.

I have a 2005 production 1885 High Wall in 38-55. I replaced the front sight with a Lyman 17M Globe sight, and installed a modern (O-Ring) tang sight. After zeroing, I fired a 20 shot group of Trail Boss handloads at 100 yards, the group could be covered with a Nickle!
As my eyes have aged, I had that gun drilled and tapped for "Redfield" sight blocks for my Unirtl 15 power 2" Hunter. Even at the slow target velocities 38-55 puts a hurt on a ground hog with a 265 grain lead bullet!

When a shooting friend passed away, I inherited all is single shot and lever gun ammo. I have 2 boxes of his 38-55 black powder loads. They won't chamber in a modern rifle with a .375-.377 bore, these have bullets that are .386! 38-55 was a Ballard round that Marlin used after they bought Ballard. Winchester picked it up and put their name on it (but I find no differences!) The bore from rifle to rifle are very wild in their diameters! In my modern rifles I use .377 sized bullets with fantastic results.
All the factory ammo is safe to shoot in any age Winchester 94 or Marlin 1893 or 336, but accuracy may suffer. To load for the old guns you'll not only need a three die set, you will need an "M" die the correct size. While I have 2 bullet molds for 38-55 (255gr RNFP & a Pope design 330 gr RN), I've been shooting Bear Creak's moly coated lead 265 RNFP sized to .377. They sell sizes way up into the .380's! When I cast bullets for 38-55, and size them, lube them with SPG lube, it was invented for black powder, but is great with smokeless loads using large soft lead bullets. I use it exclusively with 45-70 and 45-90 cast bullets also. Good lube on proper diameter bullets have very consistent shot strings, and that's good for targets and good for varmints! (In some places White Tail deer are thick as varmints, that good enough for me!)

I've had it out a few times now Larry.
First time was with a few jacketed rounds I had on hand.
Distance was 40 yards.
I was pretty happy with the start.

Yesterday I brought 6 rounds with me.
I knew it was accurate but really wanted to see just what it could do.
After 2 rounds I stopped as I knew.
I really didn't expect it from a lever action.
