Two Bowie Knives
1. Western brand bowie, circa 1976 (small brass pins in handle, each pin is one-piece; small rust spots on blade from prior owner. About 14 and 3/4 inches long. Blade is about 9 inches long).
2. Western brand bowie, circa 1986 (has larger, two-piece brass cutler's rivets in handle; almost zero rust; the pinned type knives are more desirable than the riveted type; rivets sometimes work loose and fall out, although that is probably rare; I've seen one such falling out).

While they are too large for me I always like to see a man appreciate his knives.

I do have a couple of 9” blades, but no Bowies. Well, that’s not strictly true, I guess. The big Becker is called a Combat Bowie, although it will never see any combat. It’s supposed to be a pretty good chopper, as well as a decent all-around knife.
It will be interesting to see how it compares to the Skrama. Probably more versatile, a lot of people say it chops better than sucn notorious big blades as the BK9 and the Esee Junglas.
I wouldn’t know. For a long time, the Skrama insulated me from the urge to get another big chopper. But the Becker fans are so rabid, it piqued my curiosity.

About thirty years ago when I lived in Idaho, my dad found an old Western Bowie blade at a gun show for twenty bucks. It was in pretty bad shape, but he thought I might enjoy playing with it, so he bought it and sent it to me. I cleaned it up and it didn't look too bad. I bought a brass guard from Dixie Gun Works, which was in the rough and took quite a bit of work to polish it up and make it fit. I had a slab of walnut that I made some grip panels out of, and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. And my dad was impressed! I was working as a chef at the time, and we had a professional knife sharpener come around once in a while and he charged a dollar per knife, so I had him put an edge on it. Thirty years later it will still shave hair from my arm (after touching it up on a steel, of course), and I've even used it to cut kindling.
This isn't the greatest photo, but you get the idea.
