I spotted a Winchester 100 in .308 today. I thought it would make a good deer rifle for my nephew. The gun is in great shape for the money,but I heard that were unreliable. I have never dealt with them, and I don't know anyone who has them. The one thing i have heard is to keep to more rounded bullets. Is this a truth or a myth?

Hi- I have had two, a .308 standard and a .243 carbine. Both were beautiful rifles, but both were jam-a-matics. Main problem was failure to feed on second shot. If you treat it as a single shot it would be fine.

Good Luck, MH

David;

These rifles were classic examples of "Keep it Clean" or you're asking for troubles. If they are kept Clean and properly oiled they seem to be just fine but since they don't come apart like your average Bolt Gun; well, I've seen a number of them that were close to "DOA" before they got to the Shop. A lots depends upon how and where he will be using the rifle/carbine. The last one I had come through my Shop was pretty badly damaged but once it was repaired it seemed to feed anything and everything I put in it.

I have two. One in .284 Winchester and the other in .308.

The .284 is a handloading proposition, but The .308 is the more accurate, I've never had any reliability problems or broken parts with either. Then again, I'm one of those obsessive gun cleaning guys.

Be aware spare magazines are hard to come by and pricey. I've bought trashed Model 100's from gunshops simply for the mags and spare trigger parts.

See if you can come across a Model 88, (the lever action version)

There was a recall for a defect on 100s. Winchester supplied to needed parts. My gunsmith did one a few months ago. I have no idea where he got the parts nowadays. I can only remember there was danger of an AD. Yours may have had the update but just a heads up.

Never owned a Model100 but my buddy did. He sold it a number of years ago. I've shot it & it was a pleasnt rifle to shoot. I've owned a Model 88 Win. in .308 since 1981. Taken a lot of bucks & 2 Elk with it. Never had a problem

The "recall" was a firing pin issue and it is my understanding that US Repeating Arms will still take care of the problem. But it's my guess that if the rifle has been fired much the problem has already taken care of itself.
