Not getting into this hobby/gun ownership until I was already in my 50ís, I had zero interest in an AR. And frankly had preconceived notions about them. Even as I started owning guns and shooting thousands of rounds at the range, no AR for me.
Then i took part of a local Sheriffís citizen academy a couple years back and on Ďrange nightí we had the chance to shoot their ARís. Well after 10 rounds, I changed my notions about said firearm. It had little recoil, and was easy/fun to shoot. So last year I picked up my Sport 2. Haven't shot it a lot due mainly to range limitations (Covid closures, weather etc) but am glad I have one available.
So this was not any need, just something I wanted.

I no longer 'hate' them, but still doubt I'll ever own one, but the AK I DID go with is right up there in the *evil* rifle hit list, A Bulgarian SLR95 with enough USA parts to be compliant.

Like that's going to be worth anything when push comes to shove.

Get whatever floats yer boat, but get something you can depend on.

Everybody needs an AR. It is "America's Rifle".

I didn't think I needed one until somebody told me I didn't need one. Now I have quite a pile of them.

Hey, somebody finally described a "need" scenario! That is a situation where one would definitely find a need for the carbine.

The are far more reliable that an AR15 (judging by what I see at the range), built to last several lifetimes, far more accurate (again based on what I see at the range) and can easily accommodate 20 or 30 round magazines. At 100 yards, I will take the 7.62 Russian over the .223 any day of the week. This is just one example. Think about a Ruger Mini 14 or a Browning BAR, many others like these. Why rush to buy an AR15 style rifle when there are much better and accurate alternatives? As far as I am concerned let the dumb wads in Washington think they solved the violence problem by banning the AR15 clones.
You wouldn't by chance be willing to shoot for money would you?

Got one in a trade around 5 yerars ago. Have never fired it. It IS FOR SALE with the 4 or 5 30 rounders that came with it tiogether with the scope and the extra sights it came with.
If I'm going "Alamo" it will be with the Mini 14

I had one for work and sold it when I got off the street. I have a fair number of them now. My interest was collecting every main battle rifle from the civil war until desert storm. I hit a snag when got to the M16. I ended up building every issued configuration from the 601 to the M16A2 and M4.

My ARs are some of the most accurate and fun rifles I own. Light, accurate and infinitely customizable. You can turn it into whatever you want, and later if you want some other version you can do that too. They are, plain and simple, the adult lego/erector set of the gun world. With top quality ammo I can shoot half MOA at 100 yards and with some handloads of mine I can and do get those down to .300" and on a good day, less. No recoil, more aftermarket support than a glock or 10/22, tremendous ammo variety, caliber variety and more. For 19 years all of mine were 5.56, not 223 Remington, 5.56 chambered guns. Tiring of this a bit I recently got into 6.8SPC and love the cartridge. Accurate as my 5.56 handloads? Can be but not quite but the power level is just about right between a 308 and the 5.56 all with nothing more than a bolt, barrel and mags. Same small size frame and portability, also is a hog hammer and a fine deer round. Even better the 6.8 doesnt suffer from velocity loss out of short barrels like a 5.56, at least not nearly to the same degree.

Hey, I like blued steel and walnut too but I'm not going to deny myself a fine, fine rifle because its black, plastic and aluminum.

You can even build it yourself, just dont try to get fancy, build to a spec and you'll be fine.

I have 2 AR15s, I haven't needed either one. It will be too late to buy one AFTER you need it. I bought the first one before the 2016 election, it's name is Hillary. It's a 20" bbl, weighs about 10lbs with the scope. Later got a 16" thinking I'd like it better, I do but it isn't a favorite for me to shoot. It's in case we need it.

I wonder if Joe realized that when he gave his little " Ban Assault Rifles" speech the other day ... He became the largest Assault Rifle Salesman in the land ... The fool should have kept his big mouth shut or asked the weapons makers for a salesman's commission ... Hmmm I wonder if he did cut a deal with them ... he's going to be the direct cause of a LOT of new sales .

Not that I am expecting to ever be in another gun fight..60+ year ago was enough for me...If I get into one it will be in short range, because if there is a chance for me to run the other way I am taking it...So my 9mm is plenty for me..

I'm not expecting the house to catch fire, but I have fire extinguishers and smoke alarms on every floor.

When the menacing extra-galactic Invaders come, which threaten to bring their extremely advanced technology to bear in a massive galactic purge. They will arrive in our galaxy via Stable Wormholes that they generate from their home galaxy, a bolt action or lever action just won't cut it or get the job done to defend the planet.
Since I am retired & no longer working shut downs @ Nuclear Power Plants I do not have access to ammo for my phaser.
So I picked the next best thing an AR-15.

No one has mentioned the SHTF scenario where if extra ammo and parts are needed, National Guard armories may be a resupply point.

I never cared much for ARs, preferring "real guns" made from walnut and steel, like M1s, M14, Mine 14s, etc. My PD had some 9mm ARs that were OK. When I got to Afghanistan, I was issued a Bushmaster M4 with the three shot burst feature. It was OK too and I started to like ARs a little bit.

A couple of years ago, I decided to get an AR, "just because." I got a good price on a Del-Ton, which is a decent entry level carbine. The accuracy is "minute of pie plate" which is good enough for me.

So yes, I would buy one if I didn't have one.
