Default Chef Knife

A freind of mine went to culinary school and although he went onto other things he still likes to cook. He had gotten an Oosic (fossil walrus penile bone) for a traditional wedding gift from a Alaskan freind and after a divorce past it to me.

Anyway, I made him this chef knife
raindrop 1095/15n20 Damascus on each side of a 1095 core. I put some copper in the ferric chloride and it bonds with the nickel in the 15n20 when you etch it. Boiling the blade in water fixes the black coloring of the 1095. The handle is a section of the Oosic and the bolster and front are carbon fiber from a test sheet of the material used on stealth fighters that came my way from a freind who worked on the program.
blade is 11" long and a bit over 2" deep and overall it is 17"

Wow, nicely done!

I wish I has the skills, equipment and patience to make a knife like that.

I applied for forged in fire once, but they were looking to film in October and Nov. and that year I set up for a job that would make me way over 10k just in October and then November is hunting season and nothing trumps that. I really need to quit spending so much shop time on guns and make more knives, I got a dresser full of made up Damascus billets, bars and round stock, different types of fossil ivory and types of horn, and hardwoods and burl. It was always going to be my retirement extra income and I built it up an inventory of materials and tools while I was working. I have been distracted by S&W revolvers and they keep calling me offering jobs that make it hard to say no too.

Wow, Steelslaver! Who knew?! (Along with everybody else in this thread, I'm really impressed! Stop messin' with revolvers and get to work crafting more knives already!)

Well done, that’s beautiful work!

That said, I feel bad for the walrus...

No living Walruses were harmed in the making of this knife. The Oosic is old and fossilized by sitting in the sand for years. Interesting fact I learned from an friend whose mother was an Aleut, a native from the Aleutian Islands. When they hunt walrus they kill a walrus and bury it in the sand, then dig up on buried some time previously and take that one back to the village. He said seal and walrus turns black when cooked.

I also have some sections of fossil walrus tusk. It is a type of ivory and can legally be possessed. Fresh walrus ivory can only be possessed by non natives if it has scrimshaw on it and is signed by a native artist. Legally similar to fossil mammoth and mastodon tusk. Nobody is killing those anymore. I also have a section of very dense fossil Stellar sea cow bone. They went extinct. Another thing I have is some thin slices of Musk Ox horn. Only a very few permits for those are issued to non natives. It is similar in color to sheep horn, but can have some great features, near the center sections it has a popcorn apprearance. I knew a guy, now past who used to trade, with the far north natives. I used to know where there were 7 Narwhal tusks, but they were far to rich for me. The shortest being $7,000 about 15 years ago. I bought Hippo tusks, mammoth, walrus, warthog years back before the big evil ivory deal. I also bought lots of blocks of exotic hardwoods like ammonia, desert iron wood, rosewood, redwood burl, buckeye burl. I also have some chunks of horn from Cape buffalo and some handle sized pieces or Sambar stag. I have about 2 plastic totes full of knife sized blocks, scales, horn, ivory and other weird stuff and several hunted pounds of good tool steel. bars of 1095 and W1 and W2, big hunks of giant band saw blade, bars of 5160 spring steel and some small 1'x3' sheets of D2 steel. Maybe 100# or so just in old quality files. I was a serious knife material pack rat long before I was a serious S&W pack rat

I dug out some photos of past knives I am especially proud of
I have never put this one up for sale. My pride and joy. Predator Damascus, walrus ivory handle, stainless and browned steel fittings and guard. I figure it is worth at least $850 with the ivory and all the work. I did get a grand prize over all in the metal art division of the fair with it a few years back.

it comes apart by removing skull crusher net and all the parts have locator pins.

This one was made for a co worker and is Damascus, copper and German silver and fossil walrus tusk

Here is a similar drop point with amboyna burl

this one has Arctic Musk Ox horn scales

as does this one, I called the pickle slicer as when asked what it would be good for I responded it would be good for slicing pickles. It sold at auction for $650. Need to slice a lot of pickles for that kind of money. LOL.

Nice work. I like the approach of laminating the Damascus on a 105 center.
