I was watching this one over the last 10 days. Thought it would make a good semi custom project base/shooter with better sights. Even a non FN HP is going for pretty good money these days. Before FN quit building Hi Powers you could get a Mauser HP like this one for $400, give or take. It is far from a collector grade. Just a nice shooter with lots of finish wear but no rust or pitting. It still ended up higher than I thought it would, even in today's market. This auction went out a hour or two ago.

I bought some UM Spegel style Hi Power grips a while back and have patiently searched for a deal since.

Found this one last month for mid $800s including the transfer.

Made in 1980, came with red backed grips and in pretty decent shape. Shoots nice.

Today's market I feel lucky and my patience paid off.

I have a FEG that's less ratty than that grotty example, and I wouldn't pay half of what that shed went for. The true description of Hi Power prices is insane based on this example.

I knew they'd gone up, didn't realize that worn Mauser clones were going for $750. I saw a Practical at the BigTown show last weekend that was $1400, like new with the box and two mags... starting to seem like a good deal. Guess I'm done picking up the odd and end Hi Power.

I have three nice FN/Browning hi-powers. My first Hi-power was a $400 Israeli trade-in FN MKIII with black finish. The finish was holster worn but the internals were almost new (carried a lot and shot very little). I found another browning hi-power in very nice condition at a local gun show for $500 6 months later. These are very, very nice shooters. Very accurate! I recently bought a like new in the box Browning high power (which will go into my safe) from a forum member for a reasonable price, but I was shocked at the price and condition of this hi-power on gunbroker. I was even more shocked to learn that it was actually produced by the hungarian firm of F.E.G. for mauser, so this is actually an F.E.G. pistol. If the F.E.G. was in mint condition, it would probably go for that price, but not in the condition that it is in. As always, I think a little bit more research should be done before bidding

I sold my .40 Hi-Power for $1250 recently. It was worth it. Nice gun. My first was a beat to heck 9mm that was painted black I bought from a 2nd Lt . And kept in my ruck

I came real close on a Mauser about a month ago. Never knew about them.
THankfully, I went home to research and found the FEG tie-in. No gosh-darn WAY I am paying that for a Hungarian clone, no matter how good they are.
People are asking near 4-figures for their FM Argentine guns, also. Touting the FM-machinery, training, supervision, blah blah blah.....NOT!

The market has driven the prices up for any HP copy/clone along with the real thing. IMO, if you want to own an HP copy/clone as a shooter, there are several nice ones out there from Hun., Israel, Turkey, SA., etc. But to own a genuine Belgium FN HP as an investment and pride of ownership, there is no compromise. This is a 1967 "T" series that I've owned for about 30 years. Paid around $300 for it.

Solely as a price report to contribute to the thread, not bragging, so feel free to applaud, laugh or criticize:

Last month I purchased a Mark III, not "new in the box", but in absolutely perfect condition, very very minimally fired, still covered in assembly lube much of which had congealed, original parkerized magazines, in the box with everything including factory test rounds and all paperwork, even original owners 2004 receipt, for $999.

The prices Hi Powers are bringing amazes me. Nice guns, but the name seems to be selling them much like Colts. I recently sold a 1969 Hi Power with spots of rust and light pitting for over $600 on Gunbroker. I thought it "might" bring $500 at most in the current market.

Climb baby climb. Personally, I'd love nothing more than to see them reach "Python" status.

Part of my love affair with the BHP was it’s more reasonable prices for used examples compared to say a Colt 1911. A decade ago even a ratty 1911 would bring upwards of $750 if it had the dancing pony on the side. But a genuine, real live, Browning HP could be had in shooter shape for $400 or possibly less if you got lucky. Apparently those days are gone. Remember when Cole’s was selling reparked Israeli guns for $349? That was less than 10 years ago.

We have a pair that are permanent residents here, a 1980 Browning that the Mrs bought me for my birthday one year and an early 70’s Target that I got her for our anniversary the following year. Hers was pretty nice and I paid $405 for it with 2 mags. Mine was pretty ratty and she paid $225 for it. I subsequently cut mine for Novak’s, put C&S internals in it, reshaped and fitted a C&S extended safety, had a great friend who happens to be a master engraver scratch it up a little before I reblued it. Topped it off with a set of fully checkered slim Herretts. They’re both great shooters that I load for and shoot regularly, even carry mine occasionally though I’ve never had to use it on anything worse than wild pigs and sick cows.

Having owned several, and a Hi Power fan since the '60s, I admit I'm boggled by the prices some have sold for. I mean some at $3000+ ?!? Looks like a clean FN/Browning manufacture gun for a thousand dollars or less is a good deal now days.

I've somehow managed to hang on to three, a GP comp, T-Series and MKIII.

I bought my first HP in '69, when I was posted to Schweinfurt Germany, at the post Rod and Gun Club. A '66T for $68, a P38 was the same price. Shot it a few times, and then sold it in '75 for med school tuition. Just before I was deployed to Desert Storm, not being sure I would be issued a sidearm, contacted Cylinder & Slide, and Bill L promptly sourced a MKIII and tuned it and got it to me, but left it home when was issued a 1911 for my second wartime deployment. It has been back twice more for additional changes. I always regretted selling my first HP, and about 5 or 6 years ago, at my LGS found a mint mid 60's T with the green "bag" they were then shipped with, and sent it also to C&S for a tune. I paid $600 for it, and it too has the perfect blueing and fitment of that era HP's.

About three years ago, a shooting buddy offered me his Practical for $500, so bought it, and like my other handguns, it too traveled to C&S for Novak's and other modifications, and a full tune.

I have big hands, so HP's are a little small for me to shoot, but I still greatly enjoy them. Just real precision handguns. All have the mag safety out, and have triggers as perfect as any of my 1911 pistols. And all are 100% reliable with whatever reload or bought ammo is in the magazine.

I know right? I tried to get several friends to buy one, but none ever did. Not that I can say anything, I didn't either. For one reason or another I just never made it a priority for the gun budget. Should have bought one every couple of months .

I did talk a very good friend into a really nice two tone FEG many years ago (I think the hard chrome frame was factory though I've never seen another like it). He didn't care for two toned guns, but it was cheap and he was looking for a "back up" Hi Power to a beautiful custom job I had found for him a few years prior. He passed away recently and left me a few guns, one of which was the custom Hi Power. I joked with him that if it were mine I'd send it to C&S for new sights and a hard chrome frame. He'd say that he already had one two toned Hi Power and didn't need another. I have a feeling I'll be doing just that very soon. The FEG went to one of his brothers, I wish I had a picture of it.

Saw a Hungarian clone advertised for $350 the other day.

In 2018, hearing of Browning's discontinuance of the HP, I set about searching for a clone to serve as a stand-in beater for my really nice mid-80's Browning.

Found a weird FEG variant online. It was the 'FP-9' with the strange vent rib atop the slab-sided slide that lacked the distinctive forward cut that so readily ID's a HP.

Tried, but just couldn't warm to it.
Found a Numrich P35 replacement slide, swapped extractor, spring, firing pin and retainer. Put on carry sights, deleted mag safety, VZ grips.

It's a great shooter, 100% reliable and seems to be a tad more accurate than the Browning. Best part is I don't care if it gets dinged up bit.....

Have heard good stuff about the Regent/Tisas'. One in SS would be great, but have heard they're no longer being imported, and can't imagine prices they'd bring right now.

I have a couple MkIIIs a matt and a bright blue.

The Bright blue I found at a LGshow 10-15 years back on the table of a guy selling mostly parts.... only gun he had was this HP. Said he was selling for the "Widow of a friend"........... still in the box sitting on his back table marked $350. Strange but it come home with me.......................

Both have the ramped front sight that came on the Practical with the long white stripe (like gdog's above). Added Hogue checkered wood grips to both.

If I carried a SA auto it would be a HP with some of Mec-gar's 15rd mags.

This thread made me go visit the bright blue safe queen ... and give her a little rub down!!!

The seller, in the OP, DWJ sells a lot of Israeli police guns and some of them have going for silly prices. I picked up a mid 90s FN MKIIIS with the cast frame a couple years ago from him. It's a great shooter.

I have his page saved and have picked up some odd ball stuff at reasonable prices in the past. I have also seen beaters bring prices I think are crazy! A last summer a Beretta 84 went for $1000+!

I have one I bought new in 1971. Maybe 200 rounds through it. I keep it in the rug that came with it. Put Spegal grips on it last year. Out of the 50 plus guns I have, it will be the last to go.

Mauser Hi Power? New to me, when were they produced?

I’ve got two BHPs, both purchased new in the mid 80s, the last year they were made in Belgium (not assembled in Portugal).
One I’ve shot and one I haven’t.

I have not seen a Hi-Power for sale under $1,000 in a year. The Belgium Hi Powers are just under $2,000 for a shooter (asking price). The collector grade Hi Powers go into the stratosphere. Yes, I wish I had a nice one and a nice Luger, but I enjoy the pictures. Thank you.

I have a Belgium Hi Power that I bought back in the late 80's from a retired cop that was moving to Florida,His plan was to sell everything he owned so he could get on the plane with just the clothes he had on and buy all new when he got there.I paid $200.00 for it and it will be the last pistol I ever get rid of, will probably leave it to my son with instructions to try to keep it in the family.

Mine is 1971, bought it new for 94.00. Has not been fired in 45 years. They can't be going for 2K!

I forget when, but they were Hungarian FEGs with the Mauser rollmark to help with sales.

A whole lot of the Kareens are also FEGs, too.

I picked up a pretty rough beater of a FEG about a decade ago, just because it was priced right (about $200). Came from Cole's; it had some pitting on the slide, and had been parkerized to 'fix' that.
My thought at the time was- I didn't have a Hi Power, this would get my foot in the door with the platform. Never ever thought it would become remotely valuable, but I guess it has now.

Classic, and excellent, design. Mine is one of the Israeli MKIIIs, painted in some black enamel paint, that came in some 19-20 years ago. The distributor had run out of the original mags because some people had bought extras, but it did come with a black leather inside the pants holster and extra mag holster, IIRC. Mecgars work perfectly; I've never heard of them not working.

FEG made decent guns, and some of their Hi-Power copies were accurate enough that parts were compatible with the Belgian guns, although, as was common for the time, minor fitting was likely needed. Not only did they make guns sold by Mauser, but I've read that, ironically enough, even Walther for a short period sold some of their PPK-based pistols as a budget option.

In reference to the original post, the seller of the linked auction is honest and reliable, based on multiple personal transactions.

Mach1Arsenal on GB usually has a sack full of surplus Hi Powers in the 5-600 range. I see now they only have one listed, a refinished Duracoated gun starting at 7.

A number of years ago I had a couple of the FEG clones. You could get them for around $200 back then. They were good, reliable shooters. They were pretty common at one time too. I can't remember when I've seen an FEG for sale around here. I'd like to get one again. I'd really like to get it at the prices I paid in the 90's and the 00's, but those days are gone.
If I remember right, FEG had the license to make and sell their clones with the Mauser name and the Luger name. I wonder how many know that and assume they have a true German treasure?
